“Dating a Trans Woman Doesn’t Make a Man Gay”: Online Video Goes Viral Challenging Misconceptions About Relationships With Transgender Women

In a refreshing take, Adam Kubatzke – a prominent TikToker with a following of 2 million – has gained attention for a video about all the great things that come with dating a transgender woman.

Trans Women Are Women

Kubatzke, known for sharing dating advice, sketches, and fitness-related content, teamed up with trans Internet star Emma Rose to candidly and confidently address the misconceptions surrounding dating trans women. Most notably, he explained that dating a trans woman does not make a man gay – because trans women are women. “This girl is every bit of a woman and then some,” he said.

A Valuable Lesson

In the viral video, Kubatzke humorously discussed what it’s like to be with a trans woman and used many hilarious comparisons in the process. His choice of words and gestures might’ve been over-the-top but his sincere approach was well-intentioned and particularly valuable to his audience of, primarily, cisgender men.

Trans Women and Perspective

Kubatzke stressed that being with any woman inherently involves engaging with her femininity, a sentiment he finds deeply appealing. He urged viewers to embrace the opportunity for meaningful conversations with trans women who, according to him, often bring a unique perspective and depth to discussions.

A Step in the Right Direction

In an era marked by a surge in anti-trans legislation across the United States, Kubatzke’s video is doing wonders in terms of dispelling myths and promoting inclusivity. The power of personal connection in changing prejudiced views has been well-documented and allies like Kubatzke contribute to this. While his analogies might’ve been unconventional, his willingness to engage in conversations that challenge the status quo is a step in the right direction.

Reactions Were Overwhelmingly Positive

While there was some debate, reactions to the video were overwhelmingly positive. “Something about an open-minded man is so sexy,” one person wrote. “I love this. Trans women are beautiful too,” another said. “You just earned a follow, my friend,” a third added.

Transphobes Weren’t So Happy

Despite the positivity, the video predictably attracted some transphobia. “Cringe,” one individual wrote. “Unfollowed,” another added. “You enjoy. I’ll stick with science,” a third said. “[More like], ‘I’ll stick with my third grade oversimplified thinking of science,’” a fourth hit back.

Others Criticized the TikToker Constructively

Some commenters criticized the TikToker without resorting to transphobia. “He literally fetishized her for, like, three minutes and still found time in the end to be misogynistic toward cis women,” one person wrote, referring to when the influencer implied it’s easier to have intellectual conversations with trans women than cis women.

Others Shared Similar Views

A fair few people echoed the aforementioned commenter. “Your intentions are really good. Like, really good. But it kinda feels like you’re fetishizing her, which is a big problem trans people face and a type of transphobia in itself,” one person wrote. “This was nice until he felt the need to insult the intelligence of [cisgender] women at the end,” another said.

Tearing Cis Women Down

Calling the influencer out for the way he talked about cisgender women in the video, another wrote: “Tearing cis women down to raise trans women up? Not cool. I appreciate your intentions but you should’ve gone about this in a different way. All women are wonderful. It’s not a competition and, by insulting cis women, you’re only playing into TERF ideology.”

More Good Than Harm

Others felt the video did more good than harm. “Thank you for this. It’s not a perfect video, not by any means, but so many people will see this. So many cis men. It’ll do so much good,” one person said. “This is so wholesome,” another wrote. “This is adorable,” another added. “You’ve made my week!” a fourth exclaimed.

Spreading Much-Needed Awareness

Some commenters commended the influencer for spreading awareness. One wrote: “Props to this guy for totally smashing those stereotypes and spreading some much-needed awareness. He’ll lose followers for this but he’ll gain so many more. Thanks so much, man.”

Some Felt Conflicted

Some viewers approved of the message but found the execution odd. “This video was so cringey but also, like, a good thing? I’ve never felt so conflicted but I’m smiling so I guess there’s that,” one person wrote. “Um. Yep, trans women are women and dating a trans woman doesn’t make a man gay. But. Um. What?” another said, adding laughing emojis to the end of their comment.
