“You Guys Laundering Money Around Here?”: McDonald’s Customer Returns Thousands of Dollars He Was Given by Mistake

Josiah Vargas, a TikToker, recently posted a video that has now surpassed 2.4 million views. In the video, he showed his viewers that McDonald’s had accidentally given him thousands of dollars alongside his food order. The clip has over 25,000 comments.

Vargas Was Confused

Vargas was beyond confused. He said: “Why? There’s a couple of thousand dollars here. Like, why would they do this? Do you know how badly I want this money? Why put me in this situation? Why would they give this to me? Now I have to return it because I’m a good person, I guess.”

McDonald’s Employees Called Vargas a “Blessing”

Upon returning to the McDonald’s in Elkhart, Indiana, Vargas joked with a Mcdonald’s employee. “You guys laundering money around here?” he asked. The worker quickly realized the TikToker was there to return the money and another employee called him a “blessing from God.”

Vargas Was Rewarded

Vargas was rewarded for the good deed. “They were just all hugging me and thanking me. When I was driving away, they called me back in. They gave me $200. Do good, people. Return $5000, [get] $200, and free McDonald’s for a month. Good trade value and maybe a viral TikTok.”

TikTok Commenters Praised Vargas

Largely, Vargas’ viewers had positive things to say. “You did such a good thing for them!” one person wrote. “It’s called integrity – doing the right thing even when no one is looking!” another echoed. “Your integrity is worth more. Good job,” the official Santa Claus account said.

Others Expected More From McDonald’s

Some commenters thought McDonald’s, a multi-billion dollar chain, could do more to reward Vargas. “Corporate, y’all better send a card or something,” one person wrote. Another added: “They owe this guy free Mcdonald’s for at least a year, not a month.”

Some Said They’d Never Return the Cash

Others claimed they’d never return the money like Vargas. “Only reason I’d return money like that is ‘cause I’d get paranoid they might’ve checked cameras to find me,” one person wrote. “Mad respect to you. I don’t think I’d be such a good person in that situation,” another said.

Others Implied the Video Was Fake

Some people suspected the video was staged. “I’m sorry but I was a manager at a corporate McDonald’s and ain’t no way their deposit was in ziplock bags,” one individual wrote. Another hit back: “They are, actually, [in] see-through ziplock bags. [I’m a] former McDonald’s manager.”

How the Would-Be-Expensive Mistake Potentially Happened

Some commenters speculated about how the McDonald’s employees made the grave mistake in the first place. One person wrote: “It’s fairly common for fast food managers to pick up the deposit from the drive-thru. At least a few places I’ve worked at did that.”

The Story Made Its Way to Reddit

The story quickly made its way to Reddit where users discussed it in detail. One person wrote: “As someone who worked at McDonald’s, giving him food for a month and $200 is a small price. The ones in charge of the deposit would have been fired, if not for him returning it, and possibly even fined. Losing a deposit for any business is a big no-no.”

Others Told Similar Stories

Some Redditors told stories similar to Vargas’. “I got [delivered] an Xbox that was supposed to be a couple of streets over. I knocked on their door and decided just to leave it there. A kid walks up and sees me [and it] looks like I’m taking the package. Kid looked terrified, called his dad, and then handed me the phone to talk to his dad,” one person wrote, accompanying the comment with laughing emojis.

Some Redditors Echoed the TikTok Commenters

Some Redditors joined the TikTok commenters in saying they likely wouldn’t have given the money back. “Am I the only one who would have driven off and never looked back?” one person asked. “I get this 100%, though I feel they would’ve been able to look at the cameras and trace it back to you. Next thing you know, your face is plastered all over the news for stealing.”

Redditors Called for a Better Reward Too

Like the TikTok commenters, some Redditors called for a better reward. “Corporate better give him a better reward,” one person wrote. “It’s something like 95% of the stores are independent franchisees. Odds are far more likely that this would not have affected corporate in any way,” another replied.
