“Transphobes Will Have No Arguments Left”: American Medical Association Says Uterus Transplants for Transgender Women Should Be Taxpayer-Funded

The American Medical Association (AMA) has proposed that taxpayer funding should be used for uterus transplants to assist transgender women in achieving pregnancy.

An Activist Position

The suggestion was put forward in an issue of the AMA’s Journal of Ethics titled “Patient-Centered Transgender Surgical Care.” However, the proposal received criticism for being seen as an “activist position” rather than a medical necessity – despite the horrendous effects dysphoria can have on transgender people.

The AMA’s argument, and the thought process of those who support the idea, is that transgender women’s inability to conceive children might lead to “psychological dissonance,” which could negatively affect their overall health and well-being. Uterus transplants could potentially address this issue.

The Societal Benefits Associated With Womanhood

Experts believe scientists are on the verge of making it possible for transgender women to give birth. The AMA suggested taxpayer funding up to $300,000, claiming it might be warranted as the absence of a uterus could limit chances for trans women to engage fully in the societal benefits associated with womanhood.

What the Critics Say

Critics argue that the AMA should prioritize funding research into complications related to gender-affirming treatments. Such individuals claim that questions about the long-term effects of hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgeries remain largely unaddressed, despite those procedures being nothing new.

Uterus Transplants Are Fairly New

Doctors at the University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB), are among the pioneers of uterus transplants, which have been offered to hysterectomy patients and cisgender women born without wombs. The procedure’s potential extension to transgender women who have undergone gender-affirming surgery is currently being considered.

What Trans Women Say

The concept of uterus transplants for transgender women has led to many discussions in online LGBTQ+ communities. Some trans women see it as a means to realize their dream of motherhood, while others view it as a way to enhance their femininity and solidify their identities.

Some Trans People Are Worried

News of the AMA’s suggestion was shared across the internet and some transgender people were concerned about potential backlash. “Oh man, the TERFs are going to [go crazy],” one person wrote. “They already have. I saw someone claim we were kidnapping [cis] women to steal their uteruses once already,” another replied.

A Future Full of Hope

Some trans women looked to the future – and it was a future full of hope. “When the first transgender uterus transplant happens, it will be a day of celebration. After that, transphobes will have no arguments left except the one about chromosomes which doesn’t make sense anyway because there are more than two combinations and intersex people exist.”

Others Weren’t Fussed

Some trans women felt a uterus transplant wouldn’t be for them. One wrote: “Yeah. I can sort of take or leave this, to be honest. I would love to give birth but my understanding is that there is a high amount of reworking internally to fit the uterus – and cesareans can be a taxing experience. It just seems like [I’d] have to go through a lot to be technically pregnant but in a way that is only one step removed from just using a surrogate anyway.”

The Commenter Clarified Her Stance

Concerned about misunderstandings, the commenter clarified her stance. She wrote: “I’m not against it in principle but I think I would like to see the technology evolve. Also, I’m curious [as to whether or not] there’s testing to make sure the flow of nutrients to the fetus would be good.”

Universal Healthcare and the USA

Others discussed the USA’s lack of universal healthcare. “I mean, all healthcare should be taxpayer-funded. That’s the thing. People are mad because they’re suggesting making this taxpayer-funded while other things aren’t. If we had universal healthcare like a normal country, this wouldn’t be controversial,” one person wrote.

The Younger Generation

A fair few older trans women expressed joy for younger trans girls. “I am so glad to hear about this. Sad I am too old but maybe my sisters after me will be able to carry their own babies,” one person wrote. “This is great news! Still, it makes me feel I was born too early,” another echoed.
