“They’re Identifying as Mythical Creatures Now?”: Professor Causes Uproar By Referencing “Minotaur” Gender Identity for Kids

Diane Ehrensaft – an advocate for, in her words, “gender revolution” – has made waves online with her assertions about children’s gender identities.

Ehrensaft, an influential figure in pediatric gender-affirming care, serves as the Chief Psychologist at the gender development center of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. She also teaches at the UCSF School of Medicine, where she specializes in pediatric gender-affirming care for transgender and gender-expansive patients.

Ehrensaft’s research focuses on understanding how gender identities take shape before puberty, as well as the psychological effects of interventions like puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones on children. Breaking away from conventional gender norms, Ehrensaft introduced the notion of “gender hybrids.”

“Gender Hybrids” and Their Meaning

The concept suggests that children can identify with a fusion of genders, influenced by factors such as culture, environment, and personal experiences. She cited an example of a child identifying as a “gender Prius,” drawing an analogy to occupying both a male and female identity – a hybrid.

The Evolution of Language

Delving even further into uncharted territory, Ehrensaft referenced the “gender Minotaur,” a reference to a creature from Greek mythology. The term, again, implies a hybrid gender. Ehrensaft believes that these terms play a crucial role in the evolution of gender-related language and its political implications.

A Gender Revolution

Speaking at the San Francisco Public Library, Ehrensaft expressed her enthusiasm for what she calls a “gender revolution.” She said: “I totally agree we are in the midst of a gender revolution and the children are leading it. It’s a wonderful thing to see and it’s also humbling to know [children] know more than we do about this topic.”

The Intricate Facets of Gender Identity

In Ehrensaft’s view, the insights of young individuals into the realm of gender expansiveness surpass the understanding of adults. As society grapples with defining and reimagining gender, Ehrensaft’s work stands at the forefront, encouraging open dialogues and promoting a deeper understanding of the intricate facets of gender identity.

The Internet Responded

News of Ehrensaft’s “gender hybrids” was shared across the internet and commenters were quick to share their opinions. “Wait, so they’re identifying as mythical creatures now?” one person wrote. “I think it’s a metaphor to help non-binary kids understand the nature of their gender. They’re not literally identifying as the Minotaur,” another hit back.

Liberal Lunacy and Metaphors

Several arguments echoed the aforementioned one. “I don’t see what a mythical creature has to do with gender. Liberal lunacy,” one person wrote. “My goodness, people like you really need to go back to school and study metaphors. She’s talking about the hybrid nature of the Minotaur and the hybrid nature of non-binary identities. How does it make you feel that kids understand that and you don’t?” another hit back.

A Lack of Reading Comprehension

People tried to clear things up for those who were confused. “They weren’t referring to kids identifying as minotaurs. [They were] likening having different sexual organs at different parts of your body to minotaurs,” one person wrote. “Honestly, conservatives really are showcasing their lack of reading comprehension with this one,” another added.

Others Posted Unfounded Accusations

Some commenters accused Ehrensaft and others like her of abuse. “This is nothing more than child abuse,” one person wrote. “Child abuse is refusing to let your children express themselves,” another hit back. “How is helping a child understand their gender ‘child abuse?’ I swear conservatives are intentionally trying to drive trans suicide rates up,” another responded.

Science Supports Trans Kids

Some commenters expressed disappointment in scientific advancement. “I find it so devastating that our country has abandoned science for emotional fantasies,” one individual said. “Actually, I think you’ve abandoned science since your idea of it seems to be very outdated. Read some modern research and you’ll see we haven’t abandoned science at all,” another hit back.

Others Shared Lighthearted Jokes

Some commenters, seemingly tired of the never-ending debate, shared lighthearted jokes. “Personally, I don’t allow minotaurs in my D&D games. I find their stats and race features are too powerful compared to the other races,” one person wrote. “Since conservatives are angry about metaphors now, are they going to claim poetry is a ‘liberal agenda’ next?” another asked, accompanying their comment with laughing emojis.
