“They’re Erasing Women Bit by Bit”: Transgender Athlete Obliterates National Record in Women’s Powerlifting

A transgender athlete from Canada has shattered a national record in women’s powerlifting by an astonishing 400 pounds. The event has sparked a heated debate over inclusivity and fairness in sports.

A Demonstration of Incredible Strength

Anne Andres, a 40-year-old transgender woman, recently participated in the Western Canadian Championship for female powerlifters. Competing in the Female Masters Unequipped category, Andres demonstrated incredible strength and skill and set a new national women’s powerlifting record.

Canada’s Gender Self-Identification Policy

Canada’s gender self-identification policy permits athletes to compete in accordance with their gender identity and it does not require them to provide medical documentation. This is despite research suggesting that transgender women only lose their biological advantages after two years on hormones.

The Powerlifting Community Was Stunned

Andres’ remarkable achievement involved lifting a combined weight of just over 1,317 pounds, which surpassed any previous record for squats, deadlifts, and bench presses. Her performance left the community stunned and ignited discussions about inclusivity in sports.

Undermining Cisgender Women’s Efforts

April Hutchinson, a prominent Canadian powerlifter, expressed her disappointment and pointed out that Andres had broken a record that dedicated cisgender women had pursued for years. Hutchinson claimed that transgender athletes competing in women’s sports could potentially undermine the achievements and efforts of cisgender athletes. She went on to call for a reconsideration of the policies that allow such participation.

Hutchinson’s view is shared by many who argue that transgender athletes have an advantage due to factors related to their biological characteristics. There’s an ongoing debate about transgender women competing in women’s sports and research suggests it should be looked at on a case-by-case basis; trans women, on average, lose their biological advantage after two years on hormones – but it can vary.

The Importance of Support From Friends

Andres, however, emphasized the importance of camaraderie and support from friends. In response to her record-breaking feat, she shared that her focus was not on records, but on the connections and encouragement she received from her loved ones. She wrote: “I don’t care about records. I care about being there with my friends.”

Andres Isn’t the Only One

Andres is not the only transgender athlete raising eyebrows in women’s powerlifting. Avi Silverberg, another trans woman, made headlines after beating the Alberta women’s powerlifting record by nearly 100 pounds. Silverberg’s record-breaking performance also ignited discussions about the fairness of allowing transgender athletes to compete in categories corresponding to their gender identity.

It’s a Complicated Situation

As the debate intensifies, athletes, advocates, and policymakers continue to grapple with questions surrounding fairness, inclusivity, and the essence of sports competition. The balance between celebrating diversity and ensuring a level playing field remains a complex challenge, demanding careful consideration and open dialogue.

The Internet Responded

The story was shared across social media and heated debate ensued.  Even people in transgender communities questioned the situation. One individual wrote: “The rules for trans hormone requirements in the lifting sport seem non-existent. Am I reading right that they have no minimum HRT requirements?”

Banning Trans Athletes Isn’t the Answer

Some people accused trans women of trying to erase cis women. “They’re erasing women bit by bit. Put them in the men’s category or give them their own,” one person wrote. “It’s not that black and white. These things need to be looked at on an individual basis. On average, trans women lose their advantages after two years of HRT. After that, any advantages they have are comparable to advantages that cis women might have over each other, like a really tall cis woman having an advantage in basketball over a really short cis woman. Canada’s policy is wrong. They shouldn’t let trans women compete no matter what with no medical checks. But banning them completely isn’t the answer.”

HRT Obliterates Biological Advantages

Some commenters were frustrated by the debate, “Ridiculous that this is still an ongoing ‘debate.’ HRT obliterates any advantage trans women [have] over cis women. If it didn’t, they would regularly dominate these competitions and they don’t. Blatant disinformation and transphobia disguised as ‘discourse.’ Not a surprise but it’s disappointing.”

Some People Didn’t Care

Some commenters declined to give an opinion on the subject of the debate and, instead, asked why people cared so much. One such individual wrote: “Why are so many people getting so upset over some injustice in an obscure sports competition? Different sports come up with their own rules. Sometimes they may not be fair – or maybe these rules are fair. I don’t really know or care. Why should it be a major issue of importance for so many people?”
