The US women’s soccer team was recently booted from the Women’s World Cup – and conservative Americans are absolutely delighted.
The Women Refused to Sing the National Anthem
The team made headlines for refusing to sing the national anthem before a game. Their actions were a protest against injustice in the USA. When discussing what it would take for her to sing the anthem, soccer star Megan Rapinoe – in 2019 – said: “It would take criminal justice reform. It would take the huge inequality gap that we have to be much better. It would take a lot of progress in LGBTQ rights. We just have such a disparity in this country in so many different ways, inequality in so many different ways.”
The Women Were Booted Out
The team was eliminated from the tournament after Rapinoe missed a crucial penalty against Sweden – and conservatives were absolutely delighted. T.J. Moe, a contributor for The Blaze, told his followers: “I’m glad they lost. The attitude of the [team] reflects such poor values it’s sickening. They need an overhaul. The America-hating, entitled, ungrateful group, led by Megan Rapinoe, needs to go. Quite fitting she’s the one who blew their best chance to win.”
Right-Wingers Criticized Rapinoe
Right-wing social media users took to their various platforms to criticize Rapinoe, who’s an outspoken LGBTQ+ activist. One individual wrote: “The anti-American USA woke women’s soccer team has been eliminated and Megan Rapinoe is the cause of it. I can’t stop laughing.”
Rapinoe Is Proud
Despite the negativity and bullying directed her way, and the disappointment of being eliminated, Rapinoe is proud of the team’s achievements. She said: “I thought we played really well. I’m so happy for us that we went out like that, playing the way we did. I still just feel really grateful and joyful.”
Conservatives Continued to Express Their Delight
Conservative Americans continued to express their joy. “Sweden wins! That’s what you get for not respecting our national anthem in international competition,” one person wrote. Another wrote: “I root for America every single time they compete in sports, except for women’s soccer. The US women’s soccer team got absolutely curb-stomped by Sweden. The game was lost because Megan Rapinoe, the woke piece of trash, missed a penalty kick. So Megan now bears the responsibility for why the US lost. I am so glad to see it. Go woke, go broke! Megan Rapinoe will now enter retirement with her head hung in shame.”
The Horrible Comments Continued
Conservatives just couldn’t get enough of celebrating a loss for America. One individual wrote: “Not only did the anti-American women’s soccer team lose today – Megan Rapinoe missed a penalty kick that would have sealed the win for the USA. Talk about a win-win.”
The Criticism of Rapinoe and Homophobia
Conservatives wouldn’t back down with their celebrations, with many claiming patriotism is more important than sports. Left-wing commenters, however, couldn’t help but wonder if criticism of Rapinoe was rooted in bigotry. Responding to T.J. Moe, one person wrote: “There were two other women that missed the kick from the USA but you [chose to] attack Rapinoe. It just goes to show you have your own motive.”
International Commenters Didn’t Get It
International commenters didn’t understand the conservative joy. “America, you truly are a laughing stock to the rest of the world. Patriotism is cringey, national anthems don’t matter, and fighting for justice is admirable. Please learn that and grow up,” one person wrote.
Hypocrisy Among Conservatives
Some foreign commenters pointed out the hypocrisy in conservative American attitudes. One person wrote: “How is it ‘un-American’ to protest against injustice but not ‘un-American’ to celebrate the USA losing an international tournament? And how does free speech justify businesses discriminating against LGBT+ people but not a group of women choosing not to sing a song? America, explain,” one person wrote.
Some Americans Understood the International Commenters
Some Americans echoed the words of international commenters. One person wrote: “I think we, as a country, need to reevaluate our priorities. I went traveling recently. Before that, I’d have been outraged by this. But now? Now I realize how absolutely nuts our country is. In a lot of places I went to, people didn’t even know their national anthem and things like the Pledge of Allegiance were viewed as terrifying, like something you’d see in a police state.”

The enlightened American continued: “In the US, we think we’re in the greatest country in the world. Outside the US, they laugh at us for that because of our gun crime, our medical system, our prison system, and the way marginalized groups are treated in our country. They also laugh at our patriotism because it’s viewed as too loud and unnecessary. And so many Americans don’t realize how terrible, and definitely under-developed, the US is because they never leave and explore the world.”
The Situation Is Upsetting
It’s undoubtedly upsetting to see US citizens celebrate a sporting loss and the situation definitely raises questions about how healthy American patriotism really is. Moreover, the specific targeting of Rapinoe raises concerns about widespread homophobia among conservative soccer viewers. The soccer star is due to retire this year.
