A school board in Mississippi has mandated that transgender kids must wear clothing associated with their AGAB (assigned gender at birth).
A Girl Was Forced to Miss Graduation
Because of the controversial rule, a transgender girl – known as L.B. to protect her identity – wasn’t allowed to wear a dress to her graduation. Unable to face the humiliation and dysphoria of wearing clothes associated with boys, she missed the event. According to the young woman, classmates and teachers supported her feminine clothes and praised her academic achievements.
LB Spoke Out
L. B. and her family spoke out against the decision. Her mom said: “She is the most compassionate, caring – I mean, she is a beautiful person inside and out. We will continue, as long as we have to, to make sure her story is heard.” Speaking to The Associated Press, L. B. said: “We deserve rights as humans, and I feel like there’s definitely a stigma toward our community. It’s very disappointing.”
The School District Doubled Down
Even after L. B. missed her graduation, the school district doubled down on its decision. They said “boys” must wear shorts or pants and “girls” must wear dresses, skirts, or pants. They said the clothes needed to match the gender in the school district’s permanent record.
The Decision Is Harmful
Refusing to allow kids to safely experiment and express themselves is harmful – especially so when the child is transgender. Human Rights Campaign Mississippi state director, Rob Hill, said: “Every kid should feel safe and welcome at school. Transgender kids deserve the opportunity to grow up knowing that they are valued and respected for who they are.”
The Policy Is Dangerous
Hill didn’t stop there. He continued: “This harmful policy will only further alienate and endanger kids across Harrison County who are already struggling with so many challenges today. The school district should reconsider its decision and repeal this damaging and discriminatory approach.”
Mississippi Is Not a Trans-Friendly State
Mississippi is not known as a trans-friendly state. In fact, it was the first state to ban transgender student-athletes from competing in women’s sports – despite research showing advantages are lost after two years on hormones. The law was passed in 2021.
The State Defended the 2021 Decision
The state defended its decision to ban trans girls from competing with cis girls. On X – formally known as Twitter – Governor Tate Reeves wrote: “I will sign our bill to protect young girls from being forced to compete with biological males for athletic opportunities. It’s crazy we have to address it. The push for kids to adopt transgenderism is just wrong.”
The Internet Responded to the Young Woman’s Story
The internet responded to the clothing rule change and people were largely disgusted by the school’s actions. “Girl wears girl clothes [throughout] school and prom. School forces boy clothes at graduation. Judge sides with school,” one reader summarized. “That judge needs to be removed from the bench, disbarred, and charged. They’re clearly violating the constitution and civil rights and belong in prison,” another replied.
Redditors Were Highly Critical
Reddit users were highly critical of anti-trans rhetoric. “Fascists always need scapegoats. We must fight harder to eradicate this GOP filth,” one individual wrote. “We must fight harder. Fund the ACLU. Work on raising funds to fight this discrimination. Stage protests,” another added. “Thank God she’s graduated now and can move north,” a third said.
People Were Bewildered by the Decision
A fair few Redditors couldn’t wrap their heads around the decision. One person wrote: “When ignorant people say they don’t want a trans girl in a bathroom with their precious cis girls because they have some crazy worry that the trans girl is just playing the long game to get into the girl’s bathroom, [at least then] they have a fear that something could happen to traumatize their daughter. It’s dumb – but they believe the trans girl could attack them or something, I guess. There’s not even a stupid reason for them to think that a trans girl wearing a dress and heels is going to affect them or their family in any way whatsoever. It’s, like, beyond dumb.”
Others Expressed Their Confusion
Several Redditors were confused by the situation. One wrote: “I don’t understand how it was fine for her to dress [in] ‘girl clothes’ at prom and all kinds of other school events but it suddenly becomes a big deal at graduation. Sounds to me like the school laid the groundwork for a losing court case by suddenly just deciding to stop being okay with how one kid dressed.”
A Clear Discrimination Case
Replying to the aforementioned individual, a Redditor wrote: “[Apparently], the district superintendent found out that they had a trans student, intervened, and requested that she be required to wear the male uniform. It’s a slam-dunk discrimination case because it’s literally ‘different rules for specifically one student because she happens to be trans.’”
