“I Can’t Believe These Fascist Monsters”: Donald Trump Responds to Peter Navarro’s Criminal Conviction

The conviction of former White House aide Peter Navarro, a key figure from the Trump administration, on two counts of criminal contempt of Congress has stirred controversy and debate. Now, former President Donald Trump has responded.

Navarro’s legal troubles started after he refused to comply with a subpoena issued by the January 6th Committee, which is a Democrat-led investigative body probing the events surrounding the Capitol attack its name suggests. Navarro not only declined to testify before the committee but also withheld crucial documents that had been requested.

Conviction and Potential Penalties

Navarro faced trial for his non-compliance with the congressional subpoena and a jury found him guilty of two counts of criminal contempt of Congress, a verdict that carries significant consequences. If sentenced, Navarro could potentially face up to a year in prison, in addition to substantial fines of up to $100,000.

In response to Navarro’s conviction, former President Trump made his displeasure known. He criticized the January 6th Committee for what he perceived as a politically motivated investigation. Trump asserted that the committee had not pursued other so-called important matters, such as examining Nancy Pelosi’s decision to reject additional security forces during the January 6th events.

Political Hacks and Fascist Monsters

Trump said: “I can’t believe that these fascist monsters have so viciously gone after the great Peter Navarro for defying the totally partisan January 6th Unselect Committee of political hacks and thugs, who refused to go after Crazy Nancy Pelosi and the reasons she and the Mayor of D.C. rejected 10,000 soldiers, which would have easily stopped any future security problem.”

Claims of Deleted and Destroyed Evidence

Trump also made allegations that the January 6th Committee had engaged in the deletion and destruction of vital evidence and findings. He argued that the committee didn’t want certain information to come to light and suggested that these actions should lead to prosecutions. According to him, the deleted and destroyed evidence played a significant role in his defense and that of others facing scrutiny.

A Very Bold Claim

Trump said: “His testimony wouldn’t have mattered anyway because the committee quickly and illegally deleted [and] destroyed all evidence [and] findings! [There was] much, much, much evidence and findings that the committee did not want seen. This deleted and destroyed evidence is a big part of my defense and the defense of many others.”

The Broader Implications

The case involving Navarro goes beyond the individual, prompting a deeper exploration of the boundaries of congressional authority and the degree to which individuals can be obligated to testify or provide documents. Trump’s response highlights the politicized nature of Jan 6th investigations.

Navarro’s Perspective on the Trial

Navarro himself views his case as a significant legal precedent. He claimed that it’s “a landmark case that’s bound for the Supreme Court” and emphasized the importance of the constitutional separation of powers, tracing it back to George Washington’s time.

Preserving a Fundamental Aspect of Governance

Navarro defended the concept of executive privilege as essential for effective presidential decision-making and argued that the case is not just about his personal legal situation but about preserving a fundamental aspect of governance.

Peter Navarro’s Words

Navarro said: “It’s about the constitutional separation of powers that goes back to the days of George Washington when the legislative branch first began to try to meddle with the executive branch. There are very good reasons why executive privilege is sacrosanct. It’s the mechanism by which effective presidential decision-making is made. So this case is not about me.”

Trump’s Criminal Mode of Operation

News of Trump’s response to Navarro’s conviction was shared across the internet and people were largely critical. One individual said: “Trump does hate justice and our legal system. It just doesn’t jive with his mode of operation.”

A Disgraced President

Others said that the former president’s opinion didn’t matter. “He made a choice and a jury found him guilty. Trump’s opinion is totally irrelevant,” one person wrote. “I don’t see why the opinion of a disgraced president who will soon be in prison is relevant here,” another echoed.

Just Another Trump Lie

Trump has made a habit of throwing others under the bus throughout his career and some people said he’d done the same to Navarro. “Donnie basically threw Navarro under the bus as he never gave him protection under the executive privilege guidelines. Just another Trump lie,” one person said.

Trump Would Never Risk Himself

Others echoed the aforementioned commenter. One person said: “If Trump would have simply testified under oath that he ordered Navarro not to testify, [Navarro] might not have been convicted. Even if he would have signed a letter [it] sure would have helped but, as usual, he would never risk himself to help others.”

Trump Will Soon Join Navarro

Some people responded by pointing out that Trump will likely soon be convicted too. One individual said: “Not to worry, Donnie. If you’re so upset that he was held accountable for arrogantly defying our laws, you can soon join him in his cell and give him support.”

Trump Should Prepare for Conviction

Others said that the former president needs to prepare himself for prison. One person wrote: “So little Donald Trump is angry that little Peter Navarro is going to go to prison for contempt of Congress? It sounds like he may need to begin preparing himself for the major consequences he himself now faces for the felonies he committed.”

Fascism Is Far-Right

Some people pointed out the inaccuracies in Trump’s use of the term “fascism.” One person wrote: “Trump would do well to look up the words he carelessly throws around. Fascism is inherently a far-right ideology. Project much?”

A Traitor to America

Others said that they won’t feel comfortable until the former president is also convicted and put behind bars. One such individual said: “The sooner that Trump is in prison, the better I’ll feel. Trump is a traitor and a menace to America. His followers are like zombies.”
