Challenging the Stereotypes

A woman named Alyssa has claimed that upper-middle-class teenage girls shoplift more than any other group. The TikToker’s post challenged the stereotype of the working-class teenage thief and prompted an important discussion on the topic of White privilege.

White Girls Steal the Most

In a TikTok video by Alyssa – known online as alyssacardib – boldly, but perhaps truthfully, said that upper-middle-class White girls are notorious for stealing. The TikToker recounted personal experiences to back up her claim.

She Recalled a College Class

“I will say this once, and I will say it again, but upper-middle-class teenage White girls are some of the biggest kleptos around,” the TikToker said. She went on to discuss a class in college where she mentioned buying something at a store, even if she didn’t want it, to avoid looking like she had stolen something. In the class, Alyssa’s professor attempted to reassure her that she wasn’t part of the demographic shop workers would be paranoid about. “I hate to be the one to tell you this – but I am the profile,” she hit back.

The Irony of the Situation

Alyssa’s video highlighted the irony of White shoppers being perceived as harmless, which makes it much easier for them to go unnoticed while stealing, while innocent Black shoppers often face harassment, abuse, and false allegations from retail workers and police.

An Eye-Opening Experience

The TikToker also shared an eye-opening experience. While in high school, Alyssa joined the cheer squad. She made friends and went shopping with them, only to unwittingly witness multiple girls stealing underwear. Her stories prompted viewers to share their own.

Commenters Agreed With the TikToker

The vast majority of viewers agreed with Alyssa’s words. “As a dirt poor girl, I was always so shocked when my ‘rich’ friends would steal stuff from the mall,” one person wrote. “I swear rich kids steal stuff just so they won’t be inconvenienced by standing in line,” another said. “That and because they think they’re invincible and daddy will get them off the hook if they get caught,” Alyssa replied.

Viewers Shared Their Own Stories

A fair few viewers shared their own stories related to middle-class thievery. “No lie. I went to school with these girls that would go to the mall, take a load to their car, and go back for more,” one person wrote. “I’m even weirder because I would steal things from peoples’ backpacks at school and put it in other peoples’ backpacks and watch the chaos unfold,” another humorously recalled.

A Red Flag

One commenter shared a personal story from her time in high school. Gaining almost 50 likes, she wrote: “I went to Walmart once in high school with friends. One girl switched her purse to this humongous tote bag of a purse. Should have been [a red flag] but I’m naive.”

Others Praised Alyssa’s Truth-Telling

Plenty of viewers related to Alyssa’s words and praised her for speaking the truth. “This is so true. I was astonished when I went shopping with my college friends for the first time,” one person wrote. Another said: “So accurate! I never stole anything because it always seemed so embarrassing to get caught – but every girl I knew at school was stealing.”

Retail Workers Shared Stories Too

Retail workers flocked to Alyssa’s comment section to share stories from an inside point of view – and even they can’t be trusted, it would seem. One person wrote: “As someone who worked retail, this is 100% accurate. Even as an employee, they checked [my bag] daily.”

Some Said They’d Never Steal

A fair few commenters left replies about how they, personally, would never steal. “When I was a kid, I had a breakdown after I accidentally stole some $2 earbuds because I forgot they were in my pocket,” one person wrote. “I never stole as a kid. Was too scared. My friends did though,” another added.

The Role of White Privilege

Alyssa’s video triggered important discussions relating to systemic racism and White privilege. One person wrote: “This is actually a perfect example of White privilege. White kids steal so often because they know they can; even if they do get caught, there won’t be huge consequences. Meanwhile, Black kids can’t even walk into a store without being harassed and followed and if they’re interpreted to be suspicious in any way whatsoever, the cops will be called and they’ll be put in handcuffs at best.”
