“Who Does She Think She Is?”: Bud Light Trans Woman Reportedly Charging $40,000 to Speak at Colleges

Dylan Mulvaney is a successful content creator with more than 10 million followers on TikTok and over a million followers on Instagram. She’s transgender and uses her social media platforms to document her journey in a series titled “Days of Girlhood.” Dylan’s pronouns are she/they.

Dylan is ready to take the next step in her career and has recently announced that they hope to speak in colleges and universities. She wrote: “I am booking speaking opportunities for the upcoming 23/24 school year and would love to come visit.” She included the email of booking agent Crista Spadafone only “for serious inquiries.” According to The Young America Foundation, Dylan receives $40,000 for speaking.

The Bud Light Sponsorship

Dylan has previously hit the headlines for a different reason; the influencer was recently sponsored by Bud Light. In the sponsored ad, they wore a cocktail dress and drank some of the beer. A short glimpse of her custom-branded can was also captured in a photo. Bud Light, unfortunately, came under fire for working with a transgender woman – and Dylan was subjected to horrific bullying.

A Storm of Transphobia

After their sponsored video, Dylan endured a plethora of nasty and transphobic comments and actions. “What transpired from that video was more bullying and transphobia than I could have ever imagined. For months now, I’ve been scared to leave my house, I’ve been ridiculed in public, I’ve been followed, and I have felt a loneliness I wouldn’t wish on anyone,” the influencer said.

Dylan Is in a Privileged Position

Dylan continued, going on to explain her reasons for telling her story in such an emotive way: “I’m not telling you this because I want your pity. I am telling you this because if this is my experience, from a very privileged perspective, know that it is much much worse for other trans people.”

The Grave Consequences of Hate

Dylan went on to criticize Bud Light’s handling of the backlash. She said: “For a company to hire a trans person and not publicly stand by them is worse, in my opinion, than not hiring a trans person at all because it gives people permission to be as transphobic and hateful as they want. The hate doesn’t end with me; it has serious and grave consequences for the rest of our community.”

The Internet Reacted

Dylan’s stories, both of her Bud Light sponsorship and her alleged extortionate speaking fees, were shared across the internet – and responses were mixed. Talking about the sponsorship, one Redditor wrote: “I made a video defending Dylan Mulvaney and the amount of transphobia in the comments was sickening. I’m so sorry you all go through this. I thought people were upset about it being a political statement, which it wasn’t, and mostly didn’t care that Dylan transitioned. But the long comments attacking her and the trans community [are] brutal to read.”

Some Redditors Were Confused

Some Redditors noticed that Dylan receives more hate from the right than a lot of other transgender public figures. “If [you’ve] seen the news, you may have noticed that Dylan Mulvaney is absolutely despised by a certain portion of the right. So much so that they boycotted Bud Light for sending her a couple [of] cans, Nike for [having] her [promote] a sports bra, and Maybelline after she used several of their products. It’s an obsession. I wonder, why Mulvaney in particular?”

The Answer Was Clear

To some Redditors, the answer was obvious. “She’s very visible but she also just exudes glee and I think seeing a trans person be that joyful upsets them,” one person wrote. “It’s harder to look down on someone when they’re as joyful as she is. It disproves much of [the right’s] propaganda. She doesn’t appear to be confused or anything. It drives the transphobes crazy,” another added.

Not All Trans People Approve of Dylan as an Advocate

Dylan has garnered some criticism from the transgender community too, with many finding her to be immature, annoying, and a bad representative of the community as a whole. One Redditor wrote: “Why would anyone treat us with any respect when Dylan Mulvaney is our spokesperson? Why would we ever expect to be treated like decent [people] when this person is out there making us all look like a bunch of idiots? Why do we always have the wrong people speaking on our behalf?”

But Some Dislike Her Without Disapproving of Her Advocacy

Despite the criticism from some, plenty of trans people dislike Dylan but approve of their advocacy. One person wrote: “The only time I’ve ever seen trans women complain about Dylan is when they say she’s cringe because her content is overtly positive and cheery. That said, one might argue that she doesn’t give the most well-rounded take on the transfem experience but you can say that about literally any singular trans woman regardless of following.”

But Plenty of Transgender People Admire Her All Round

Despite the criticism from some of the trans community, plenty admire Dylan. One person wrote: “I understand that she might be cringey to some but it’s amazing what she’s doing for us. Not everyone can [perfectly represent] everyone. That’s what diversity is. If you feel like she doesn’t represent you, then she doesn’t represent you – but that doesn’t invalidate her identity or what she’s doing.”

Plenty of People Were Fuming About Her Alleged Prices

Plenty of online commenters were disgusted by the amount Dylan is allegedly making by speaking at colleges. “[She’s] charging how much? Who the hell does [she] think [she] is? Probably transitioned with this in mind so [she] could get rich” one individual wrote, using the incorrect pronouns. “Oh, I don’t know. A beautiful, strong woman who knows her worth? Does that make you angry?” another replied.
