Federal Judge Tanya Chutkan has imposed a limited gag order that has the potential to put an end to former President Donald Trump’s social media tirades against Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Trump’s First Amendment Rights
The order limits the potential felon’s attacks on witnesses, prosecutors, and court staff. Trump’s legal team attempted to argue that the restriction was an attack on the defendant’s First Amendment rights – but Chutkan rejected their claim.
A Fair Administration of Justice
Chutkan said: “You keep talking about censorship like the defendant has unfettered First Amendment rights. He doesn’t. We’re not talking about censorship here. We’re talking restrictions to ensure there is a fair administration of justice on this case.”
Potential Severe Consequences
Naturally, Trump’s campaign immediately criticized the decision as it limits what the former president can say publicly. Trump could easily ignore the order and say what he likes anyway but the consequences could be severe.
An Absolute Abomination
A spokesperson for Trump said: “Today’s decision is an absolute abomination and another partisan knife stuck in the heart of our democracy by Crooked Joe Biden, who was granted the right to muzzle his political opponent, the leading candidate for the presidency in 2024 and the most popular political leader in America, President Donald J. Trump.”
Fighting for the Constitution
The statement continued: “President Trump will continue to fight for our Constitution, the American people’s right to support him, and to keep our country free of the chains of weaponized and targeted law enforcement.”
Four Criminal Counts
Since Trump was charged with four criminal counts in relation to his attempt to overturn the election results, the former president has repeatedly attacked Special Counsel Jack Smith and his team.
Donald Trump’s Insults
In relation to Smith, the former president has thrown around insults such as “deranged” and “looks like a crackhead.” He even went as far as to refer to his wife as a “Trump hater,” using her work on a documentary about Michelle Obama to back up his claim.
A Limited Gag Order
The gag order in question is limited. As such, there are some things the former president is still permitted to say. There are no restrictions on Trump’s ability to criticize the Department of Justice as a whole, for example, meaning he’s still allowed to claim the prosecution is politically motivated.

News of Chutkan’s decision was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people agreed with it. One commenter wrote: “Trump really should try to get insults a tad closer to the truth so he stops looking like an immature child calling someone names when things don’t go his way.”

Another commenter wrote: “[Trump’s] next rally will be interesting. He just lost 80% of his speech. Now he will have to show us how little he knows about being president. He can no longer fake it.”
The Importance of Voting
Plenty of people called for Americans to vote come the presidential election. One person said: “Trump has taken even deeper mind control of his cult. It is so important for every Democrat or decent person to get out and vote.”
Trump in a Cell
Others pointed out that the former president could end up incarcerated if he violates the gag order: “Trump is following a plan that fits what a ton of us hope for. If he keeps it up with the name-calling and offensive comments, sooner or later the judge will slap his rear into a cell. There will be rejoicing in the streets.”
Class and Morals
Somewhat echoing the aforementioned commenter, another person said: “Trump thinks he is so smart and clever. He is not. He lacks class and morals. I hope the judge takes action if he doesn’t obey the gag order.”
A Junior High School Student
A fair few people pointed out that Trump’s social media habits are extremely childish. One such individual wrote: “No credible politician should be calling people stupid names. That would be fitting for a junior high school student.”
Like a Toddler
Also comparing the former president to a child, another commenter said: “Most sane adult people would not have to be told not to do this. However, the Orange Emperor has to be guided and reprimanded like a toddler. “
A Small Miracle
Others were sick of hearing about the potential felon: “I am so done with Trump. When he goes to prison, most of us will be so, so happy! How Melania put up with this creep for so many years is a small miracle. People will do anything for money.”
Everyone Should Be Mortified
Another person wrote: “It’s beyond embarrassing that it’s gotten to this stage. I have family in Europe and they say everyone thinks America is a laughing stock and that Trump is proof that the ‘Americans are dumb’ stereotype is true. Everyone should be mortified.”
