The House has approved Marjorie Taylor Greene’s amendment to cut Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s salary to $1.
Waking up to Corruption
Greene blamed low recruitment numbers in the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force on Austin, claiming that he failed to fulfill his duties. It didn’t seem to occur to her that young people have woken up to corruption, no longer seeing a life of fighting the battle of rich men as desirable.
Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Words
Greene went as far as to say that Austin was “destroying our military.” She said: “Secretary Austin has not fulfilled his job duties. As a matter of fact, he’s destroying our military. I would like to introduce an amendment that uses the Holman rule to slash the secretary of defense, Lloyd Austin’s salary, to no more than $1.”
A Recruitment Drop
Greene continued: “During Secretary Austin’s tenure, military recruitment has reached crisis levels of low recruitment. The numbers show that the Army expects to fall 15,000 recruits short of its annual recruiting goal this year.”
World War III
Greene added: “The Navy is expecting to be short 10,000 recruits. The Air Force is down another 3,000. This cannot stand, especially with our government funding and fueling a war in Ukraine that is leading us undoubtedly to World War III.”
The Holman Rule
Austin is the first Black Secretary of Defense and reportedly receives a salary of $221,000. As previously mentioned, Greene talked about reducing his salary with the Holman rule, which “allows amendments to appropriations legislation that would reduce the salary of or fire specific federal employees, or cut a specific program.”
Defending the Nation
According to the Pentagon spokesperson, Austin “is focused on leading the Department of Defense and ensuring our service members worldwide have the resources and support the U.S. military needs to conduct our mission to defend the nation.”
Shawn Skelly’s Salary
Lauren Boebert wanted to go a step further and also reduce Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness Shawn Skelly’s salary to $1. Rather than producing intelligent arguments for this, she decided to needlessly attack transgender people.
A Vile Attack
Spitefully and unnecessarily misgendering Skelly, Boebert said: “This delusional man, thinking he is a woman, embodies and espouses the woke-ism that’s causing significant harm to our military readiness and troops’ morale!”
Ukraine Over the U.S.
On social media, Greene later said: “This is a government that’s weaponized against its political enemies. A government that puts Ukraine’s border above our own. And a government that isn’t working for our people.”

News of Greene’s amendment was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people were highly critical. Most commenters discussed her extremist tendencies and hateful attitude – and some even called for her salary to be cut.
A Theatrical Distraction
A fair few commenters questioned the legality of the move and others dismissed it as nothing but “theater” that wouldn’t come to fruition, designed to deflect from other issues that give the Republican Party a bad look – like Donald Trump’s 91 criminal charges.
The Potential Racism
Some people speculated about potential racism being behind Greene’s amendment, given her far-right, extremist tendencies. People discussed the historical implications of paying a Black man such a low wage.

“I wonder, would MTG have introduced this amendment if Austin was a White man? Spoiler – she wouldn’t,” one commenter wrote. “She can’t do it alone though. Bunch of racists in the GOP,” another individual replied.
Pushing Petty Agendas
One person was particularly upset about the situation. They said: “Millions of Americans are forced to die because they cannot afford healthcare. Millions of Americans are choosing between food and housing because, even though they work full-time, they can’t afford both. It is offensive that we have people in office pushing petty agendas while Americans suffer with problems politicians could solve if they would just do their jobs.”

Others discussed the performative nature of Greene’s amendment. One commenter said: “What performative [garbage]. They know, without any doubt whatsoever, that this amendment stands zero chance of passing the Senate. These people are utterly pathetic.”

Some people discussed alternative reasons for the drop in military recruitment. One such individual wrote: “I love that she blames the first ever Black Secretary of Defense rather than accepting that young people are done fighting their wars. Absolute idiot, full of hatred. They’re so out of touch. Draft us. I dare you. We’ll refuse and accept the consequences but that hasn’t even crossed your boomer minds.”
Seems Like Pure Racism
Another commenter said: “I’m so confused about this. Obviously it’s not actually going to happen but it just seems like pure racism to me? Like, they’re not even attempting to hide it? They’re just bullying a Black man for the sake of it. Unbelievable. Well, very believable actually.”
A Lack of Military Knowledge
Others pointed out that Greene likely doesn’t have particularly extensive knowledge of the military. One person said: “It will never get through the Senate. These are not serious people. What the Hell does MTG know about the military?”
