Former President Donald Trump, who is facing almost 100 criminal charges, has stirred controversy by vowing to imprison his political enemies if he were to return to the White House.
Trump’s Fascist Promise
Trump’s bold statement came during an interview with right-wing broadcaster Glenn Beck, who inquired about the former president’s earlier campaign promise to incarcerate Hillary Clinton. When asked if he regretted not pursuing Clinton’s imprisonment and whether he would consider locking up people if he were president again, Trump said: “Well, I’ll give you an example. The answer is you have no choice because they’re doing it to us.”
A Target of Political Persecution
Trump’s criminal charges encompass a wide range of alleged offenses, including hush money payments to Stormy Daniels, the possession of classified documents at his residence, and his efforts to maintain power following his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. Trump vehemently denies all these allegations and portrays himself as a target of political persecution.
Trump’s Baseless Accusations
Many of Trump’s Republican allies have echoed his words, claiming that the Department of Justice and the FBI have been weaponized against the former president. “I always had such great respect for the office of the president, the presidency, and I never hit Biden as hard as I could have. Then I heard he was trying to indict me and it was him that was doing it,” Trump said.
The Independent Prosecutors
In reality, the cases against Trump are being pursued by independent prosecutors. Special Counsel Jack Smith oversees two federal cases, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is leading a case involving Trump’s business documents in New York, and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is heading an investigation into efforts to overturn the election result in Georgia.
Trump Doesn’t Listen
Despite the clear independent nature of the ongoing investigations, Trump continues to assert that President Joe Biden and his political party are the driving forces behind everything. It’s worth noting that the former president has not provided any substantial evidence to support these claims.
“Sick” and “Evil” People
The former president described Democrats as “sick” and “evil.” He said: “I don’t know if you know this, [Biden] put his top person into the office of the Manhattan district attorney. They’ve been in total coordination with Fani Willis. You know, so many of these days, I have a couple of other lawsuits all funded against me by the Democrats. But these are sick people. These are evil people.”
Democracy Is Fragile
Trump’s words were shared across social media and people, for the most part, were absolutely disgusted. “These fascists would create a right-wing government built off bigotry, a cult of personality that worships Trump, and total control that would make Adolf Hitler smile if he’s watching from Hell as Trump takes over as the leader of the American fatherland. Democracy is a beautiful thing – but it’s also fragile.”
Trump vs. Hitler
Hitler comparisons were an understandably common response. “Ahhh. I’m starting to understand how Hitler came to power after he was put in prison. Yikes,” one person said. “This is literally the playbook,” another replied. “Surely his blind fans can see why we compare him to Hitler now?” another added.
You Can Only Jail Criminals
Others discussed the way Trump and his fans love to play the victim. One person wrote: “The thing is, you can’t jail political opponents even if you try. You can only jail criminals. However, this messaging is just eaten up by his base because it makes it sound like you can jail your opponents and it lets them play the victim card.”
A Dystopian Future With Trump
One person questioned whether the future Trump proposes is really what his supporters want. They wrote: “Lock up people who oppose him? Is this the America people want to live in? An America where everyone must comply, where no dissent will be tolerated, where there is only one voice that speaks for all? This wouldn’t be America.”
Innocent Political Opponents vs. Criminals
Others explained the difference between jailing criminals and mindlessly jailing political opponents. “If that isn’t tyranny, I don’t know what is. The difference here is that Trump and his people likely committed actual crimes based on present charges against them. His political opponents have no evidence [against them] of crimes committed,” one person said.
Trump’s Fans Want Fascism
Trump’s fans, on the other hand, were as blindly supportive as ever. One individual said: “The day President Trump jails his evil opponents, rids the country of leftists, and changes things to allow for eternal presidency will be a national holiday for centuries to come. Only then will America be truly great.”
