President Biden’s reelection campaign was quick to criticize Trump. The Democratic National Committee said that the former president was “once again praising a terrorist organization.”

Hezbollah Is Very Smart

Trump made the original controversial comment in a speech. “You know, Hezbollah is very smart. They’re all very smart,” he said about the Iran-backed terrorist group based in Lebanon.

Smart Does Not Equal Good

Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump, defended the remark. He claimed Trump “was clearly pointing out how incompetent Biden and his administration were by telegraphing to the terrorists an area that is susceptible to an attack.” He also said that “smart does not equal good.”

Smart, Good, and Evil

Lord, in his column, said: “There is no connection whatsoever – zero – between the definition of ‘smart’ and the concepts of good, bad, or indifferent, much less any tie between ‘smart’ and ‘evil.’”

A Lack of Knowledge

The commentator continued: “What is particularly astonishing here with [the criticism of Trump] is, as mentioned, the utter lack of knowledge about the truly evil figures in world history – and, specifically, that these people were hardly dumb.”

A Controversial Past

Lord is a former Reagan White House official. Moreover, he was the first outwardly pro-Trump commentator hired by CNN. He was fired in 2017 over a social media post of a verbal Nazi salute.

In Itself Smart

In his column, Lord went on to claim that Trump’s ability to recognize Hezbollah as “smart” is “in itself smart.” He said: “Trump is no fool who is taken in by ignoring the reality of who these people really are.”

The Internet’s Response

News of Trump’s attempt to defend himself was shared across the internet and people flocked to comment sections to give their views on the matter. One person said: “I’m just baffled that nobody in the Republican Party has been able to muzzle someone who is clearly an unhinged Russian pawn.”

For the Good of the Country

Another commenter wrote: “The fact that people actually support this village idiot is what is truly scary! We need to speed up Donald’s court cases, especially the one in Georgia, so we can have him in state prison. We need to do this for the good of the country!”

Food for Thought

Others recounted Trump’s past claims: “I’m almost positive I remember Trump telling us in 2017 that he had a plan that would make peace forever in the Middle East. Could he maybe have been lying? Food for thought.”

The Biggest Professional Troll

Another person said: “I swear, Trump looks at any conflict or problem in the world and thinks, ‘How do I choose the worst response possible to own the libs today?’ He might be the biggest professional troll. There is no way he can be so wrong on everything unintentionally.”

A Complete Idiot

One person called the former president “un-American.” They wrote: “Trumpy is a complete idiot. He’s playing politics and pointing fingers. He doesn’t care about anybody but himself. Doing that is counterproductive and un-American at this stage.”

A Wannabe Fascist Dictator

Another commenter said: “Makes sense. Trump thinks using sneak attacks and targeting civilians is what our military should be doing. The guy thinks like, acts like, and really wants to be a fascist dictator in a country that he would turn into a [horrible place].”

The Far-Right’s Hypocrisy

Others pointed out hypocrisy in the far-right: “At this point, this idiot has praised many of our enemies and has bashed our own military… but it’s Biden and the Dems who are supposedly the evil ‘communists’ who hate America? What am I missing here?”

Nuking a Hurricane

Another commenter implied that Trump is so stupid that everyone seems “very smart” to him: “He told us to inhale bleach and that we should nuke a hurricane. Of course he thinks that everyone is smarter than him.”

Smart vs. Good

Some people were a little more understanding. One such individual said: “I mean, I get what he’s saying about ‘smart’ not equalling ‘good’ but… I mean, come on. Maybe don’t use positive words to describe terrorists.”

That Checks Out

Another person wrote: “At this point, I don’t think Trump could say or do anything to surprise me. He could do or say the absolute most evil thing in the history of mankind and I’d just be like, ‘Yep. That checks out.’”
