Trump’s Iowa Fumble: ‘No Way’ They Won’t Vote for Me, He Asserts After Botching City’s Name in Fiery Campaign Misstep

Donald Trump disregarded his advisors’ advice to not raise expectations too high and said that he would win Iowa’s Republican presidential caucuses in January.

Despite using the incorrect name to greet his Iowa audience in Sioux City on Sunday, the former president exuded confidence. He referred to the place as “Sioux Falls,” which is a city in the state of South Dakota. ‘I go around saying of course we’re going to win Iowa.’ In the beautiful Orpheum Theater in Sioux City, Iowa, Trump addressed his crowd, saying, “My people said you cannot assume that.” “Iowa will never vote against Trump,” he said, pointing out that the tariffs his administration had placed on China had helped agricultural states economically.

Nevertheless, Trump greeted a city more than 80 miles north and over the state line in South Dakota with gusto when he ascended the stage. ‘Hello to a place where we’ve done very well, Sioux Falls. Thank you very much’ he remarked. After realizing his mistake, he made the correction after a few minutes.

Trump’s Eighth Campaign Stunt in Iowa in Over a Month

In a little over a month, Trump has attended eight campaign events in Iowa as part of his rushed autumn schedule in preparation for the nation’s first-ever caucuses in January. Following engagements over the previous month in eastern and central Iowa, where he has gathered thousands of people as his staff has sought to run a more structured campaign than in 2016, Trump made his address in Sioux City, the epicenter of GOP-heavy western Iowa. Trump, a well-known real estate tycoon, was not familiar with the procedure at the time.

Trump has been criticizing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for months, but on Sunday, the former president intensified his attacks on former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, a member of Trump’s Cabinet, since she has aroused fresh interest among Iowa Republicans and caused a spike in the polls.

Haley, a former South Carolina governor, was made fun of by Trump for declaring upon her resignation from the UN that she would not seek the presidency in 2024 should Trump do the same. He referred to Haley as “a highly overrated person,” using the pejorative moniker “bird brain.”

Trump continued by implying that one of the reasons he included Haley in his Cabinet while she was still governor was to facilitate the ascent to the office of Henry McMaster, the lieutenant governor of South Carolina at the time and a devoted Trump fan, as governor. ‘I liked it,’ Trump remarked. ‘I got two for the price of one.’

Haley Slammed by Trump for Disloyalty Towards Him

The day before, Haley had chastised Trump for applauding foreign strongmen and warned that his brand of ‘chaos, vendettas, and drama’ would be harmful. Now, he was criticising her more sharply, focusing on her disloyalty to him rather than her work in his Cabinet.

Haley has been criticizing Trump subtly without mentioning him for months while running for office in states with early elections, but her remarks on Saturday, in front of the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual conference in Las Vegas, were her most pointed condemnation of the outgoing president.

Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon who unsuccessfully ran for the 2016 Republican nomination but later served as Trump’s cabinet’s secretary of housing and urban development, backed Trump prior to his appearance on stage in Sioux City.

Given that Carson is a member of his Cabinet, his backing might not seem significant. But when the U.S. Capitol was besieged on January 6, 2021, numerous members of Trump’s government resigned, including Elaine Chao, the secretary of transportation, and Betsy DeVos, the secretary of education. Both officials resigned, citing Trump’s actions on the day of the horrific assault.

Attempting to counter the influence of the outgoing president, Ron DeSantis and other Republican presidential candidates were overshadowed by Trump’s spectacular debut at the Iowa State Fair in August. According to DailyMail.com, Trump—who is now leading his closest competitor, Ron DeSantis, by double digits in the polls—should withdraw the Florida governor from the race.

‘He didn’t have many people show up,’ Trump remarked of DeSantis. ‘That’s not good. He’s doing very poorly in the polls. Very, very poorly. And I think he’s going to be leaving the race pretty soon, I think. When asked if he would take on DeSantis in a debate, Trump said, ‘He really should leave the race.’ The former president made his entrance with the opulence that only Trump can provide.

For the audience to see, Trump Force One flew low over the fairgrounds. A lengthy queue of individuals wanting to meet the former president at Steers & Steins was managed by the Secret Service. Shouting his name, mobs trailed him throughout the fairgrounds. During his rally address, Trump made fun of the other candidates present at the fair that day. Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy were also campaigning in Iowa, in addition to DeSantis.

In early October, Trump made a pledge to an enthusiastic gathering in Iowa that, should he be re-elected in 2024, he would permit gasoline-powered vehicles but outlaw “child sexual mutilation.” ‘Under a Trump Administration, gasoline-fired engines will be allowed — but child sexual mutilation will be banned, if that’s OK with you,’ he told the assembly.
