“If Trump Doesn’t Fit the 14th Amendment Disqualification, Who Will?”: Trump Lashes Out Over Colorado Ballot Lawsuit

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW), a watchdog group, has initiated a lawsuit aimed at thwarting Donald Trump’s candidacy in the 2024 presidential election in Colorado.

The 14th Amendment and Ineligibility

CREW, acting on the behalf of six Colorado voters, has filed a lawsuit challenging Trump’s eligibility to run for the presidency in 2024. The basis of the argument is the 14th Amendment, which prohibits people who have “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” after taking an oath of office from pursuing public office once more.

The Lawsuit’s Claim

The lawsuit claims the former president’s involvement in the Jan 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol falls into the realm of this clause and, as such, should render him ineligible for public office. It’s worth noting that Trump has not been formally charged with insurrection.

Trump’s Forceful Counterpunch

In response to the lawsuit, as is usual for him, Trump took to social media. He quickly branded CREW as “degraded” and made a point of belittling their efforts. The former president wasn’t done there, though, and he went on to allege that U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco might be engaging in “illegal” collaboration with CREW on the lawsuit.

Trump said: “The group suing me in Colorado to ridiculously try and unconstitutionally keep me off the ballot is Trump deranged CREW, composed of many slime balls [and] groups. They are, perhaps illegally, working with Weissmann acolyte Lisa Monaco.”

DeSanctimonious and Crooked Joe

Not content with just a defensive stance, Trump seized the moment to discuss his prospects in the upcoming 2024 election. He confidently asserted that he enjoys a significant lead over potential opponents and didn’t shy away from taking shots at his political rivals, dubbing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as “DeSanctimonious” and labeling President Joe Biden as “Crooked Joe.”

In a subsequent social media post, Trump continued his barrage against the lawsuit, painting its filers as “bad radical left people” who manipulate the Department of Justice for their own ends. He insisted that Lisa Monaco is acquiescent to their demands and lamented that he is a victim of what he perceives as “election interference.”

A Broader Effort

The lawsuit in Colorado represents just one facet of a broader effort to exclude Trump from the 2024 presidential race, all grounded in the 14th Amendment. Several states are considering similar actions, like Michigan, New Hampshire, and Arizona.

The Supreme Court

Moreover, the U.S. Supreme Court is set to deliberate on a similar lawsuit fairly soon in a moment that could offer clarity on the 14th Amendment and how it may be applicable to Donald Trump’s candidacy.

A Polarizing Issue

The legal strategy to disqualify Trump from seeking public office is far from a unanimous perspective among legal experts and political scientists. It’s a polarizing issue that transcends partisan lines. Some conservatives, including members of the Federalist Society like law professors Michael Stokes Paulsen and William Baude, have also lent support to the theory.

Trump remains resolute in his opposition, dismissing the theory as a mere “trick” concocted by “radical left communists.” He went further, inaccurately asserting that the majority of legal scholars have debunked its validity concerning the forthcoming 2024 election. The outcome of this ongoing legal battle will be closely scrutinized, as it has the potential to hold significant consequences for Trump’s political future and the broader electoral landscape.

The Internet’s Opinion

The 14th Amendment and its potential to affect Trump’s plans is something that’s been discussed and debated in great detail in recent weeks. One online commenter said: “It’s like impeachment convictions. If Trump wasn’t convicted then what does a president need to do to actually get convicted? Literally murder someone in broad daylight? If Trump doesn’t fit the 14th Amendment disqualification then really who will? The guy set a literal armed mob of insurrectionists to try to overthrow the democratically elected government.”

Not Only Trump

Another said: “Not only Trump. The 14th Amendment should apply to every single elected official in this country [who] supported and aided the insurrection. If we don’t hold everyone accountable then the constitution and laws are moot and pointless.”

Aiding and Abetting

Discussing whether or not the 14th Amendment is applicable, one person said: “If it fits him, it fits anyone providing comfort. That includes every Republican running for office that pledged to support him even if convicted.”

The Nation Could Be In Trouble

Another wrote: “The GOP isn’t willing to admit the truth and that Trump has so many charges he will likely be convicted. They still have him as the main candidate. The courts are proceeding anyway. What a stupid, foolish thing to do. If he gets elected and they defy the courts, we’re [in trouble]. The nation as we know it will not survive the kind of dismantling he will do.”

An Unprecedented Situation

Another said: “You don’t need to be a constitutional scholar for this. The problem is, since this is the first person to reach the White House and commit such an act of treason, his minions are searching for ways to get around the Constitution and avoid losing power. Think what the election would be for Republicans without Trump.”

A Massive Loss

The commenter continued: “I think the Republicans need a major loss in order to get back to reality. We need two viable parties and diverse ideas and opinions to move forward. For the past 20 years, [Republicans] have focused on power over the will of all the people. They got away with surpassing voting and populating the Supreme Court with a good long-term strategy. They need a massive loss in order to have a course correction.”

The President Is Not Above the Law

Another said: “Trump needs to get convicted so both sides of the aisle can heal. Yes, one side will hate it more than the other but it’ll prove to everyone that the president is not above the law. Both sides need to see that in action. Otherwise, it’s bound to happen again.”

A Modern Day Jesus

The commenter continued: “For the GOP, he can be a martyr. For the Dems, it can just be justice. But it needs to happen in order for our country to heal. Trump broke our country and, ironically, he can heal us. If the Republicans want to think of him as a modern-day Jesus, so be it. But he needs to go to jail for their sins.”

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
