“Trump Is the Least Religious Politician in American History”: Over Half of Republicans Think Trump Is Religious, Poll Finds

A new poll has shed some light on the way GOP voters view the religious faith of prominent political figures. The results were surprising, with more than half of Republicans seeing Trump as a person of faith.

The poll aimed to find out how registered voters perceived various political figures in terms of their faith. Astonishingly, more than half of Republicans, 53% to be exact, considered former President Donald Trump to be religious. This result surpassed outspoken religious figures in the GOP.

When compared to his opponents in the Republican presidential primary, Trump continued to maintain his lead in the faith category. As an example, 47% of Republican respondents believed Ron DeSantis to be a person of faith, with 31% for Tim Scott, 31% for Nikki Haley, 30% for Vivek Ramaswamy, and 22% for Chris Christie. All of these numbers were considerably lower than Trump’s perceived faithfulness.

Biden and Harris

In contrast, only 23% of Republicans saw President Joe Biden as a person of faith, with even fewer recognizing Vice President Kamala Harris as religious – 12%. Given that Biden and Harris have both spoken about their religious views, this demonstrates an interesting bias among right-wing voters.

Despite rarely discussing his religious opinions, Trump did emphasize his support for policies favored by Christian voters during a Faith and Freedom gala. He highlighted his role in appointing conservative Supreme Court justices who subsequently overturned Roe v. Wade. “No president has ever fought for Christians as hard as I have,” he claimed.

Some of Trump’s potential Republican rivals in the 2024 presidential race, including Pence and Scott, have centered their Christian faith in their campaigns. Regardless, such candidates have struggled to gain traction in the polls.

Democrat Views on Faith

Among Democrats, President Biden topped the list of political figures perceived as people of faith, with 63% viewing him as such. Biden has been vocal about his Catholic religion and its influence on his values. Vice President Kamala Harris came in second at 45%.

Independents Favor Romney

Independent voters perceived Mitt Romney, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the political figure most likely to be a person of faith, with 42% supporting this view.

Uncertainty About Faith

The poll also revealed an uncertainty among Americans regarding the faith of some politicians. Half of the respondents weren’t sure whether figures like Ramaswamy, Haley, Scott, or Christie were people of faith. A similar number were also uncertain about Harris’ faith.

The Internet’s Response

News of the poll was shared across the internet and people flocked to comment sections to give their views. One person wrote: “How can people be so blind, deaf, and gullible? Trump is evil. He is not a person of faith. He doesn’t follow any of the commandments. He lies, cheats, and steals by way of fraud.”

A Criminal and a Traitor

The commenter continued: “On top of all that, he is a criminal and a traitor to the country.  He is selfish, self-centered, and completely without empathy or sympathy. He is a psychopath who only cares for himself.”

A Wannabe Dictator

The commenter concluded: “Trump cares about three things and the country is not one of them – money, power, and himself. Trump wants to be a dictator and dismantle democracy and there are many Republicans who are willing to help him achieve that goal.”

The Phenomenon of Confirmation Bias

Another individual, discussing Trump’s supporters and the way they view him, said: “Confirmation bias, in psychology, is the tendency to favor information that confirms existing beliefs or values.”

Ignoring Vital Evidence

“People exhibiting this bias are likely to seek out, interpret, remember, and give more weight to evidence that supports their views while ignoring, dismissing, or undervaluing the relevance of evidence that contradicts them. The cult fits this assessment,” the commenter continued.

A Blinded Cult

People found it hard to believe that anyone would think Trump was religious. Another person wrote: “The cult is blinded by the most amoral being who is so obviously a snake oil salesman. I find their blindness baffling. It is a wonder they can function on a daily basis.”

MAGA Republicans and Thinking Straight

One commenter said the poll’s results could only be explained by three possibilities. “Anyone who thinks Donald Trump is a person of faith either doesn’t know Donald Trump, doesn’t know what a person of faith is, or can’t think straight. Period,” they wrote.

Idiotic and Indoctrinated

Others said the poll’s results highlighted the level of indoctrination the former president’s supporters have been subjected to: “Trump is probably the least religious politician in American history. This just goes to show how idiotic and indoctrinated his followers are. Absolutely astonishing.”

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
