“He Used Evangelicals to Get What He Wanted”: Trump Intentionally Evades Question About His Faith

Donald Trump evaded a question about his “Christian” faith during a town hall meeting in Iowa.

The question was posed by a woman in the audience. “How has your faith grown since you decided, in 2015, to run for president? And who has mentored you in your faith journey?” she asked the former president.

Changing the Subject

Initially, Trump responded enthusiastically. “Such a great question,” he said before changing the subject entirely. The criminal defendant continued: “You know, I’ve seen so much heartache and turmoil. I was a developer and I did other things and, you know, I had a wonderful life before all this stuff. I didn’t know what a grand jury was. I didn’t know what a subpoena was – what is a subpoena? I had a wonderful life.”

Not a Great Country

The former president went on to claim he made America great. “I couldn’t be more glad. I am so happy I did it because I’ve made America great. We can do it again. Right now, we are not a great country. We are not a great country,” he said.

Circling Back to Religion

Eventually, Trump circled back to religion – but he still didn’t answer the question: “But I’ve gotten to know, because of this, evangelicals. I know so many people who feel so good about themselves and their families and they base it on religion. I had never had that kind of experience where I got to know so many. And Franklin Graham and Paula White.”

Not One of Them

The former president continued to talk about religious people as if he wasn’t one of them. He said: “I mean, I know so many people that are so incredible. Religious people – and not just Christians, not just evangelicals.”

The FBI and Catholics

Trump continued: “You know, when I look at the Catholic faith, you take a look at what the FBI [does], look at what the FBI is doing to Catholics. They’ve made them like the enemy. They’ve made them… it’s horrible.”

A Lack of Biblical Knowledge

Showcasing a severe lack of biblical knowledge, the former president went on to ask: “How could a Catholic ever vote for a guy like Biden again after the experience that they’re going through?”

Incredible Religious Leaders

Trump went on to claim that he “met some of the finest people” he “wouldn’t have had the privilege of meeting” if he hadn’t been POTUS. He added that the individuals in question were “incredible” religious leaders.

Atheist Donald Trump

Trump has previously claimed to identify as a non-denominational Christian. Despite that,  many Americans – especially given the former president’s behavior and obvious lack of knowledge regarding Christianity – believe him to be an atheist.

A Love Fest With Faith Leaders

The criminal defendant previously said: “We have a real love fest with the faith leaders of Iowa and the faith leaders throughout the country. We have to protect religion. We have to have religious liberty. You know, it’s two words that are not being used very much anymore and we have to bring it back.”

The Internet’s Response

News of Trump’s deflection was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people questioned how anyone could possibly believe he was ever a Christian. Quite a few commenters accused the former president of using religious individuals, particularly evangelicals, to gain power.

MAGA Republicans Think Trump Is God

Plenty of social media commenters questioned the intelligence of Trump supporters. One person wrote: “Trump couldn’t recite a Bible verse if his life depended on it, yet his cult thinks he’s God. What idiots.”

The Willful Blindness of MAGA

Others said Trump’s lies are obvious: “When I think of Trump, I think of a sheep in a wolf’s clothing. Why can I see through Trump when others can’t? It’s not that hard. Is it willful blindness?”

The Evangelicals Have Been Conned

One person accused the former president of using evangelicals to achieve power. They said: “Trump is not, and never was, a Christian. He just used the evangelicals to get what he wanted. They have all been conned”

Beware False Idols

Echoing the aforementioned individual, another person wrote: “Trump does not have a religious bone in his body. Never did and never will. Doesn’t one of the commandments warn about false idols?”

Zero Knowledge of Any Religion

Another commenter said: “He avoided the question because he has zero knowledge of any religion. He only lies to them to get support for his demented ego. He will hold a special place in Hell.”

Calling Trump Out

Others questioned why the audience didn’t call out Trump’s deflection: “So did the audience call him out for not answering? Nope. After eight years, I still don’t know how he gets away with this. By the way, you haven’t made America great.”

A Nonsensical Answer

Plenty of people weren’t surprised by the former president’s answer. “What do you expect when you ask a heathen that question? The nonsensical answer that is a hallmark of Trump,” one commenter wrote.
