“I’m Allowed to Have Those Documents”: Trump Erupts in Anger at Megyn Kelly in Interview About Classified Documents Case

In an interview with Megyn Kelly, Donald Trump has claimed to be innocent in regard to the classified documents case. During the conversation, he said he had a right to possess the documents and got angry when Kelly asked further questions.

Trump’s Questionable Defense

Trump is facing charges of illegally storing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence and lying to federal investigators. When Kelly questioned him about the allegations, the former president said: “I did nothing wrong. I’m allowed to have those documents.”

The Controversial Audio Tape

One of the key elements of the case is an audio tape in which Trump discusses secret national security documents with third parties. During a subsequent interview with Bret Baier, Trump claimed to have had no documents on that day, only newspapers and magazines.

Confronting the Contradiction

The aforementioned assertion contradicted the audio tape, in which he was heard saying the papers were highly confidential military documents. When confronted with this discrepancy by Kelly, Trump chose to deflect rather than provide a direct response. “Number one, I did nothing wrong. I come under the Presidential Records Act. I am allowed to take these documents – classified or not classified,” he said.

Throughout the interview, Trump repeatedly referenced the Presidential Records Act, which is an act that dictates the requirements for the maintenance, access, and preservation of information both during and after a presidency. Perhaps most importantly, the act says that presidential records belong to the U.S. government, not the president personally.

The former president insisted that the act gave him permission to possess classified documents and withhold them. He then deflected once more, redirecting attention to President Joe Biden and arguing that the current president should be under scrutiny for possessing confidential documents.

Donald Trump’s Words

Trump said: “The fascists are going after me and they’re not even going after Biden, even though he has 10 times more documents than me – maybe more than that. Biden has thousands of documents. This should be a criminal case for Biden because he is not covered by the Presidential Records Act.”

Allegations of Bias

Trump went on to raise concerns about the legality of the raid on Mar-a-Lago. He attributed it to what he described as “Democrat fascists” seeking to interfere with an election. He said he was being unfairly targeted.

A Historical Look at Fascism

Trump’s use of the term “fascist” to describe people he perceives to be left-wing is interesting. While fascism has historically been adopted by far-right governments, it’s not impossible for a far-left government to fall into it. Regardless, the ideology is associated with authoritarianism and the removal of freedoms, something the Republican Party is seemingly fond of in regard to book bans, restrictions on abortion, and the removal of transgender rights.

The True Meaning of “Far-Left”

The Democratic Party, from an internationally objective standpoint, is almost as far from “far-left” as the GOP. Moreover, it’s important to note that fascists and dictators have historically accused their opponents of trying to impose the evil they themselves were striving for.

A Heated Exchange

Kelly went on to ask Trump why he labeled newspapers as “confidential documents” and Trump’s frustration became very evident. He refused to answer her question, claiming that it had already been answered.

Trump Didn’t Hide His Annoyance

The former president, clearly not trying to hide his frustration, said: “I’m not going to talk to you about that because that’s already been substantiated and there’s no problem with it. I’m allowed to do what I want to do.”

The Internet’s Response

News of the interview was shared across social media and people, for the most part, were critical of Trump. “Yes but after you get permission from the archivist. That’s how the law, [the] Presidential Records Act, works. They aren’t yours,” one person said in response to the former president’s claims.

Others said the same thing as the aforementioned commenter but went into more detail. One person wrote: “Per the Presidential Records Act, which I’ve read and Trump obviously has not, at noon on Inauguration Day all presidential documents become the property of the National Archivist.”

Classified Military Documents

The commenter continued: “If Trump wanted any of them, he would have to apply to have those released. As for military documents, those belong to the agencies that created them. They decide when and if the documents can be declassified. There are protocols for asking that they be declassified and the documents are then marked as declassified.”

A Location Rife With Spies

Another commenter said: “The president is not allowed to leave the White House with top secret battle plans which he then leaves at a location rife with spies. He is not allowed to hide them and destroy evidence of him hiding them.”

An Admission of Guilt

Others pointed out that, at this point, Trump has essentially admitted to the felony. “So he admits to a felony,” one person said. “I would feel bad for his lawyers but they already know the evidence is against them. It’s just a money game for them,” another replied.

Trump’s Fans and God

Some people redirected the conversation toward Trump’s fans. Replying to the aforementioned commenters, another said: “Yet his supporters won’t believe he’s a criminal.  If he had an affair today, some of them would say God has allowed him to do it.”

Unfit at Every Level

Others looked deeper into Trump’s words and came to the conclusion that he has a very warped view of the role of the POTUS. “He thought the president’s job description was simply ‘you get to do whatever you want.’ Unfit at every level,” one individual wrote.
