Donald Trump has said many alarming, ridiculous, and sometimes terrifying things over the years. Now, the criminal defendant has called for shoplifters to be shot.
Telling Police to Shoot Shoplifters
In a recent speech, former President Donald Trump promised to “immediately stop all of the pillaging and theft” if he’s re-elected as POTUS. The criminal defendant said he’d do this by telling police to shoot shoplifters.
California Republican Party Convention
The speech in question took place at the California Republican Party convention. Trump said: “We will immediately stop all of the pillaging and theft. Very simply, if you rob a store you can fully expect to be shot as you are leaving that store. Shot!”
A Hypocritical Stance
The criminal defendant, who allegedly tried to change an election result, continued to claim that shoplifters deserved injury or death. “The word that they shoot you will get out within minutes and our nation, in one day, will be an entirely different place. There must be retribution for theft and destruction and the ruination of our country.”
Not an Isolated Incident
This isn’t the first time Trump has talked about needlessly murdering human beings. He also suggested shooting refugees and migrants to prevent them from crossing the US-Mexico border. Mark Esper, former defense secretary, has claimed that the former president also asked about shooting people during the Black Lives Matter protests.
The Decline of the U.S.
The criminal defendant went on to say: “We will reverse the decline of America and we will end the desecration of your once great state, California. This is not a great state anymore. This is a dumping ground. You’re a dumping ground. The world is being dumped into California. Prisoners. Terrorists. Mental patients.”
A Social Media Post
A couple of days after his speech, Trump arrived in New York City ready for a court date the next morning. On social media, he said: “I’m going to court tomorrow morning to fight for my name and reputation against a corrupt and racist Attorney General, Letitia James, who campaigned on ‘getting Trump,’ and a Trump-hating judge who is unfair, unhinged, and vicious in his pursuit of me.”
Welcome to Hitler’s America
News of Trump’s controversial speech was shared across social media and people flocked to comment sections to give their views. Referring to the former president’s 91 criminal charges, one person wrote: “I guess he will be shot the same as these others without a trial. Sounds like dictatorship to me. Welcome to Hitler’s America.”
Republican Lynch Mobs
Plenty of people shared the view of the aforementioned individual. One commenter, in reference to the events of Jan 6th, wrote: “How does he feel about participants in Capitol Republican lynch mobs?”
Stealing Classified Documents
A fair few commenters echoed the aforementioned two. “What if they steal classified documents or try to overturn a democratic election?” one person asked. “Well now, that’s okay. Don’t get overzealous here. Those people are patriots,” another responded satirically.
A Very Extreme Promise
Plenty of commenters couldn’t wrap their heads around the extreme nature of Trump’s promise. One commenter said: “If stealing food is a capital offense, what about tax fraud? Charity fraud? Education fraud? Election fraud? Insurance fraud? Contract fraud?”
Greed vs. Need
Others pointed out that many shoplifters do it out of desperation and because of a lack of support. “White-collar criminals deserve the same fate. White-collar criminals do it for greed and not need. Tax evaders also,” one person wrote.
Legal for Republicans
Some people imagined a dystopian, far-right, Trump-led society. “In Republican America, the penalty for every crime committed by a non-Republican is death. Crime is legal for Republicans,” one individual said.
A Sarcastic Response
Another commenter wrote: “I didn’t see the speech but I’m guessing, based upon his past remarks and personality, that he just as vehemently demanded the same penalty for employers who commit wage theft. What’s that? He did not? Are you telling me that a guy who [uses] a golden toilet thinks workers exist to be trodden upon? Well, color me shocked.”
A Disgraced Loser
Others were harsher with their words. One such individual said: “He is so full of it. What would his position have been if thousands of the terrorists that he ordered to charge the Capitol building had been shot? He’s a disgraced loser, a lying traitor with Hitler aspirations. He should never be allowed to run for the presidency.”
Normalizing Casual Murder
One commenter found Trump’s speech particularly terrifying. They wrote: “It’s scary how he and his supporters just want to murder anyone they don’t like. How have we reached a point where casual murder is just being normalized?”
The Issue of Police Brutality
Others discussed police brutality and the injustice surrounding it. “Maybe he should ask what the punishment should be for cops who roll up and murder people in their cars and get all charges dropped by a judge,” one person said.
A Proportional Response
Another individual wrote: “Why stop there? Headshots for a broken tail light. Pants too low? Magnum round in the heart. Your music is deemed to be too explicit? Thrown off a cliff. Obviously, I’m exaggerating – but holy goddamn Hell. There’s a concept known as ‘proportional response.’ People should learn it!”
A Stark Warning
One commenter left a very serious warning. They said: “When a politician trying to become president calls for lawbreakers to be executed on the spot without any form of trial, the public really needs to question where said politician is trying to lead them. This man has long stood for violent retribution during his political career and that should never be forgotten.”
