“This Is Intentional”: Trump’s Legal Team Claims Trial Dates Clash With Election Campaign by Design

A member of Donald Trump’s legal team has claimed that the timing of the upcoming trials was intentionally chosen to coincide with the 2024 presidential election campaign.

Trials Could Overlap

The spokesperson for Trump’s legal matters, Alina Habba, described the prosecutors’ desire for swift proceedings in both federal and state cases as “unrealistic theatrics” and argued that each trial’s duration, spanning from four to six weeks, could lead to overlapping schedules.

A Deliberate Strategy

Habba, who serves as the general counsel for the pro-Trump political fundraising group Save America PAC, claimed that the potential for the trials to extend until election day is a deliberate strategy. She said: “We know this is intentional. It’s to tie [Trump] up. It’s definitely political.”

The First US President to Face Criminal Charges

Trump maintains a strong position in polls among conservative Republicans, with his popularity somehow increasing despite the charges against him. Simultaneously, he is the first former US president to face criminal charges, including federal cases related to alleged election interference and document concealment.

A Convicted Felon as the Republican Nominee

Trump’s indictments were discussed at a Republican presidential debate where six out of eight candidates said they would still support the former president as the nominee even if he were criminally convicted. Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, told ABC News: “We can’t have a convicted felon as our nominee for president and expect to win. The most amazing part of the debate, to me, was the idea that the majority of my competitors think you can have a convicted felon as our nominee and win.”

The Need for New Leadership

Nikki Haley, a former ambassador to the United Nations and Republican presidential hopeful, said that Trump’s legal challenges would keep him away from the campaign trail and highlighted the need for new leadership. Another Republican candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy, made an unusual suggestion on NBC, proposing election law reforms prior to certifying election results. David James, a spokesperson for Pence’s campaign, criticized Ramaswamy’s idea as demonstrating a lack of understanding of the government system.

The Internet Responded

News of Habba’s accusation was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people found it to be ridiculous. “If you don’t want trial dates to class with your campaign, don’t commit felonies. Pretty simple concept,” one person wrote. “Nobody is forcing him to run at the same time that he’s on trial,” another said.

People Were Shocked

Some commenters were shocked by Habba’s words. “Right, because the justice system usually revolves around criminals’ schedules,” one person sarcastically wrote. “I’m amazed at how many Republicans still think laws only apply to minorities,” another replied.

No One Is Above the Law

Others called out the attitude of those who agree with Habba. One person said: “First you can’t hold him accountable because he’s president, now we can’t hold him accountable because he’s trying to run for president. Next, it’ll be that we can’t hold him accountable because he thinks he might run for president. No one is above the law. I can’t say a court date doesn’t work for me because I have a job during that time. Don’t commit crimes if you don’t want it to interfere with your life.”

It Couldn’t Have Been Intentional

Some people said the timing couldn’t be intentional because of the nature of the country’s election campaigns. One such individual wrote: “Our election campaigns are two out of every four years. It’s not exactly possible to have a large case that doesn’t run over a campaign cycle.”

Law and Consequences

Others directed their words at Trump himself. “Look, there is nothing in any law book that says you have to run for reelection. If it’s such a burden, don’t campaign. The law isn’t going to wait for you to finish this revenge tour. You broke the law, now there are consequences. Tough,” one individual said.

The Timing Is Fitting

Some people said the timing is fitting. “You commit election crimes during an election, it’s fitting to be tried during an election,” one person wrote. “Don’t do the crime if you ain’t got the time,” another said. “So use your constitutional rights and request a speedy trial to get all of these legal cases over with before election day,” a third suggested.

The 14th Amendment

Others discussed the 14th Amendment, which prohibits anyone who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion,” or given “aid or comfort” to anyone who has, from running. “Under the 14th Amendment, he can’t run anymore anyway so problem solved,” one person wrote.

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
