House Republican Kevin McCarthy has made it very clear that he intends to open an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. However, his stance has angered several fellow Republicans.

McCarthy Wants the “Truth”

Despite failing to present concrete evidence of their claims, Republicans have been accusing President Biden of corruption for months. Regardless, McCarthy has proposed the idea of commencing an impeachment inquiry after the congressional recess in order for more information and testimonies to be accessed. He believes doing so will lead Republicans to the “truth.”

They Can’t Impeach Without Evidence

McCarthy, according to CNN, is steadfast in his position even behind closed doors. Nonetheless, the Republican Party does not unanimously support his stance. A GOP representative, speaking anonymously, expressed skepticism regarding the credibility of the claims. Speaking to CNN, they said: “There’s no evidence that Joe Biden got money or that Joe Biden, you know, agreed to do something so that Hunter could get money. There’s just no evidence of that and they can’t impeach without that evidence. I don’t I don’t think the evidence exists.”

A Tactical Distraction

Representative Matt Rosendale, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, referred to an impeachment inquiry into Biden as “long overdue” while simultaneously expressing hesitation. Speaking to Newsmax, he said: “I’m afraid now that [McCarthy’s] bringing it up just to use it as a distraction so that he can try and push forward this continued resolution which many of us are not going to sign off on.”

A Looming Government Shutdown

Like Rosendale, many within the party are opposed to McCarthy’s approach. Congress has yet to pass all required bills and may struggle to by its deadline. Suggestions of passing a continuing resolution are being considered to prevent a government shutdown but the Freedom Caucus, a faction of far-right House Republicans, has voiced opposition to such a move.

Bridging the Gap

Aiming to bridge the gap between opposing sides, McCarthy has warned that a shutdown could impede ongoing Republican investigations into Biden, including a future impeachment inquiry. It appears, however, that his efforts have not yielded the desired outcome.

Concerns Over Spending

Ken Buck, another member of the Freedom Caucus, previously criticized the discussions surrounding an impeachment inquiry. Speaking to CNN, he said: “This is impeachment theater. What [McCarthy’s] doing is he’s saying, ‘There’s a shiny object over here and we’re really going to focus on that. We just need to get all these things done so that we can focus on the shiny object.’ Most of us are concerned about spending.”

A Republican Attempt to Clear Trump’s Name

News of the unnamed spokesperson’s “no evidence” claim was shared across the internet and social media users were quick to share their thoughts. One person wrote: “Beyond the distraction, it’s definitely an attempt to say, ‘See, it happens to everyone. What Trump did isn’t really that bad.’ The false equivalency [is] to show that Biden is just as bad as Trump – or that Trump isn’t nearly as bad as people portray.”

Plenty of People Agreed

A fair few people agreed with the aforementioned commenter. Replying, another wrote: “A lot of what the GOP does is an effort to create the perception that Trump is no worse or more corrupt than anyone else. It’s much easier to try to drag your opponent down to the mud with Trump than to actually argue Trump’s quality.”

Diluting the Meaning of Impeachment

Others accused the Republican Party of attempting to downplay the meaning of impeachment. “Yep, this is an attempt to dilute what impeachment means. They are going to attempt to normalize it so when their next guy gets impeached no one will care,” one person said.

Making America Numb to Impeachment

Some people elaborated on the ideas presented by the aforementioned commenter. One such individual wrote: “It’s to muddy the waters [and] make impeachment meaningless. If every president gets impeached, whether for good reasons or not, the gravity and seriousness of impeachment itself is reduced. So next time a Republican president breaks the law and is impeached, Republicans have more reason to yawn and just say it’s politics and what the other side will do. It’s to make the electorate numb to impeachment.”

The Rise of Fascism in America

Others expressed concerns about what a far-right American society could lead to over the next decade. One person said: “If they impeach Biden without reason, the Republican Party should be sued for no peaceful transition of power that started with a violent coup on January 6th. This Republican Party wants Republican dictators. Take that seriously or they’ll start putting woke people in death camps in the next ten years.”

A Lack of Evidence Won’t Stop Them

Some people simply expressed their dissatisfaction with the modern Republican Party. “Since when, in recent history, has a lack of evidence stopped MAGA idiots from raising a ruckus?” one individual asked. “McCarthy and the GOP have lost all credibility at this point. They are so [blindly in support of Trump that] it’s pathetic,” another wrote.
