“They’re Trying Everything They Can to Delay It”: Trump’s Legal Team Demands Trial Is Stopped Due to COVID-19 Risks

In their latest delay attempt, Trump’s attorneys in his New York civil fraud trial have asked that it be stopped immediately due to COVID-19 risks.

The Request Was Denied

Trump, unmasked, watched as his lawyers, also unmasked, demanded that that trial be delayed due to the risk of COVID-19 infection. The judge was quick to deny their request, pointing to available N95 masks. Despite the defense’s concerns about infection risk, nobody took up the offer.

Christopher Kise’s Complaint

Christopher Kise, Trump’s lead lawyer, was the one to bring up the issue. He rose from his seat to discuss the fact that an individual from New York Attorney General Letitia James’ team had tested positive for COVID-19 and that a total of four people from her office had also contracted the virus.

Taking Appropriate Precautions

Kise spoke about the numerous court staff, attorneys, and media representatives present. Discussing the positive cases, he said: “These individuals are entitled to know this so that we can take appropriate precautions.”

At one point, Kise and Alina Habba – another of Trump’s lawyers – demanded a second microphone be used in cross-examining witnesses so they wouldn’t have to share one with James’ office.

All Rules Were Observed

Assistant Attorney General Louis Solomon asked why Kise was worried. “Everything in this courtroom concerns me, including your health,” Kise hit back. “Well, thanks for your concern,” Solomon replied. James’ office has insisted that all quarantine rules were observed.

Arthur Engoron’s Decision

New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron said that proceedings would go forward, noting the availability of masks. A spokesperson for James’ office said: “As always, the Attorney General’s Office has followed and complied with CDC guidelines.”

Opting Not to Wear Masks

The statement continued: “Our office properly notified the court and defendants’ counsel – and the court decided to proceed with trial today. If there were any concerns, defendants’ counsel could wear masks today or at any point…but they have opted not to.”

The Internet’s Response

News of Trump’s demand was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people couldn’t believe the irony. Numerous commenters criticized the former president’s pandemic response and some even called for him to be prosecuted for the unnecessary deaths.

A Goal and No Position

One social media commenter said: “Imagine the guy who showed up to the presidential debate late with no mask while COVID was in full swing now complaining about a thing he himself said wasn’t a thing. It’s insane. They have a goal and no position.”

One of the Worst People Alive

Another person wrote: “So now COVID is a concern? Potentially hundreds of thousands of excess deaths caused by irresponsible public health policy, undeniably inspired by him, and now he’s trying to get his case dismissed over something he downplayed and ignored until now. He is honestly one of the worst people alive.”

Stop the Testing

Plenty of people referenced Trump’s handling of the pandemic. One such individual said: “Just stop testing the people that are in the courtroom and you’ll stop getting so many positives! That was his plan before. What’s he worried about?”

Irony Is Dead

Others discussed the irony of the situation: “Irony isn’t just dead. It was brutally murdered, cut into pieces, burned, thrown out for several months, scraped back together, and sold off to Dahmer’s ghost… and then resold to Epstein’s ghost. Now it’s being paraded around the world.”

The Defense’s Desperate Measures

Another commenter said: “They know they’re [doomed] so they’re trying everything they can to delay it. They also said that they needed to push it because Trump couldn’t be there, then the judge told them he wasn’t required to be.”

Slithering Out of Tight Spots

One person implied that Trump will likely manage to get what he wants. They wrote: “The Orange Tumor is growing desperate. His lawyers are throwing the kitchen sink at the court trying to shut down the trial. Still, he seems to always slither out of tight spots, no matter how dire they seem.”

Trump in a Mask

Others discussed the possibility of the judge enforcing masks: “I hope this backfires on them spectacularly and the judge orders everyone to wear a mask. Trump in a mask in the courtroom. His followers will absolutely lose their minds.”

Violating Gag Orders

Another commenter wrote: “This makes me think this is why they keep not imprisoning him for violating gag orders. That’ll get his extremist supporters riled up and they’ll protest outside of courthouses, giving them potential reasons to delay trials due to safety.”

Thousands of Unnecessary Deaths

One person called for Trump to be prosecuted for his handling of the pandemic. They said: “Since he now believes that COVID is real, can he be criminally prosecuted for all the deaths he caused due to his outright intentional, malicious denial for political reasons?”

Trump Should Be Prosecuted

Echoing the aforementioned commenter, another individual wrote: “Trump should be prosecuted for the murder of everyone who unnecessarily died of COVID. Especially as he’s now apparently admitting it’s a risk.”
