“The Republican Party is an Anti-American Hate Group”: Marjorie Taylor Greene Called Trans People a “Cult” and the Internet Didn’t Hold Back

Marjorie Taylor Greene has labeled the transgender community a “cult” and accused it of negatively influencing children. In a discussion about a poll regarding transgender participation in sports, she proudly expressed her stance against such athletes.

“The American people are sick and tired of the trans cult ruining women’s sports and corrupting our children. The numbers prove it,” Greene wrote on social media, linking a poll indicating that a majority of Americans are against transgender inclusion in sports. Specifically, 33% either supported or held no opinion about transgender girls and women participating in school sports aligned with their gender identity, while 67% opposed it. The opposition to trans equality was significantly higher among Republicans (93%) compared to Democrats (45%) and independents (67%).

Cis Women Were More Accepting

Interestingly, although the discourse surrounding the exclusion of trans girls and women from sports is often framed as a matter of fairness for cisgender females, the poll revealed that women were generally less inclined to oppose transgender participation in school sports, with only 59% opposing the idea in contrast to 75% of men.

The Results Could Be Skewed

Conducted by the conservative media outlet The Center Square, the poll referred to transgender girls and women as “biological males.” The use of such language indicates a right-wing bias and audience. As such, it’s important to note that the results could be skewed.

Bigoted LGBTQ+ Stereotypes

The majority of athletes in women’s sports, at all levels, identify as cisgender. Moreover, research suggests that transgender women lose any advantage they may have over cisgender women after an average of two years on hormones and, to top it off, the assertion that transgender people are “corrupting our children” lacks support and is potentially a reference to an unfounded anti-LGBTQ+ stereotype associating queer individuals with child exploitation.

Greene’s Anti-LGBTQ+ History

Greene has a track record of expressing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments, particularly against transgender individuals. Throughout her time in Congress, she has made opposing LGBTQ+ rights a significant aspect of her agenda. She introduced a bill aimed at restricting gender-affirming care for youth and limiting access to such care for adults by prohibiting federal funding.

Moreover, Greene has attempted to incorporate anti-transgender measures into various budget-related bills to prevent federal agencies from addressing LGBTQ+ rights on social media platforms. She has characterized transgender women as threats to cisgender women and advocated for the exclusion of trans women from gender-segregated spaces like restrooms, despite there being zero evidence of risk.

Trans People Are Safer Than Churches

News of Greene’s social media post was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people disagreed. “I think she confused ‘trans people’ and ‘the Republican Party,’” one person wrote. “And ‘the church.’ Statistically, kids are safer with a trans person than with a pastor/clergy member,” another replied.

Republicans Love to Project

Others said the same thing as the aforementioned commenters, albeit less directly. One such individual wrote: “It’s always projection. They always project exactly [what] they are doing. It must be the brain’s way of hiding the awful stuff it is doing from itself. Just tell the people you hate that they are doing it instead and now you’re able to tell yourself that you are not that; you are the one who calls [that] out.”

Others Were Harsher

Plenty of commenters weren’t as polite with their responses. “[Greene] preaches hatred and genocide. This traitorous filth needs to be removed from office,” one person wrote. “And permanently thrown into prison for life where she belongs. She also needs to be permanently banned from politics for the rest of her life,” another added.

An Anti-American Hate Group

Some commenters went as far as to accuse the Republican Party of being a hate group. “Make no mistake, the Republican Party is an anti-American hate group,” one person wrote. “Honestly, I want to see the Republican Party be labeled as a hate group and a terrorist organization for their actions against the LGBTQIA+ people,” another echoed.

History Repeats Itself

Some commenters discussed the way modern transphobia mirrors the bigotry other minority groups historically faced. “Recycling of the same old propaganda used against gay people and, before that, Jewish people. It’s painfully unoriginal,” one person said.

Love vs. Corruption

Others specifically directed their words at Greene – and they weren’t particularly kind. One individual said: “Keep crying, [Greene]. If ‘corruption’ means teaching kids to love themselves and each other even if they’re a bit different, then we will happily keep ‘corrupting’ them all.”

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
