“They Said Tampons Were Inappropriate”: Former Nun Speaks Out Against Church’s Taboo on Tampons

Carrie-Eileen Chuff, a former Roman Catholic nun, has shed some light on her five-year journey in a Pennsylvania convent. She now uses social media to reveal the inner workings of religious groups, sharing her experiences and insights that were once shrouded in secrecy.

Discovering Her Calling

At the age of 13, Chuff found a profound love for her faith, despite growing up in a nominally Catholic family. She yearned to dedicate her life to God and, upon learning of the possibility of joining the church in a vocational capacity, saw it as the perfect path to express her devotion.

Leaving the Convent

After five years as a nun, Chuff decided to leave. She attributed her departure to the strict rules imposed upon her, including avoiding certain types of clothing like “hip huggers” and refraining from using tampons, which were deemed inappropriate.

Challenges and Misery

Chuff revealed that her decision to leave stemmed from a deep sense of unhappiness. While the initial excitement of joining the convent sustained her for a brief period, her overall emotional state remained one of misery. She shared her doubts with superiors, who dismissed them as mere temptations.

A Very Negative Emotional State

Chuff said: “I left because I realized that being a nun was not my calling. I knew this because I was utterly miserable. While the initial year or so was tolerable due to the excitement of joining, my baseline emotional state was one of misery. I tried my hardest to change myself, thinking it would improve, but I only sank deeper into misery to the point where I wished a bus would hit me as I walked along the sidewalk one day.”

Overcoming Fear and Disappointment

Chuff said that the fear of disappointing her family and those back home was a significant challenge in leaving the convent. Despite her doubts and the red flags indicating that religious life wasn’t her calling, those above her insisted she stay.

Chuff said: “I was more afraid to leave than I was to enter in the first place. Even though I expressed doubts and saw red flags indicating that the religious life was not for me, my superiors insisted otherwise.”

Finding Happiness as a Wife and Mother

Today, Chuff is a mother of six and happily married. She expressed disbelief in her past conviction that she was meant to be a nun and emphasized her newfound contentment in her role as a wife and mother. “Being a mom now, I can’t believe I ever thought I was supposed to be a nun,” she said.

The Internet Responded

Chuff’s story was shared across the internet and people flocked to comment sections to share their views. One person said: “In the USA, you hardly ever see a nun. People are running away from religion. It’s very hard to believe in something that doesn’t exist. The fairytales in that book are very, very hard to believe. Everything is magic.”

She’s Better Off Now

Others directed the comments at Chuff, telling her that she made the right decision. “You’re better off. You must have read Genesis? God’s chosen, Abram, gave his wife to Pharaoh for slaves and animals. Nothing improved from there,” one person said.

Many Convents are Modernizing

Some people left optimistic comments and claimed that a lot of convents are better now. One person said: “Everything she has said is true. However, many communities of sisters have changed and modernized. I’m glad she found her true vocation as a wife and mother.”

The Catholic Church’s Rules

One person said: “This is not true according to the policies of the Roman Catholic Church. If the convent she was part of was telling her not to use [tampons] then it was breaking the Catholic Church’s policies on hygiene and personal rights.”

The Convent Didn’t Follow the Rules

The commenter continued: “The Catholic Church literally has an entire website page devoted to feminine products and how they should be used in a healthy manner. Obviously, I am not saying that the woman in this story is lying. But the convent that she was part of is not at all indicative of what the Catholic Church’s stance on using these products is.”

Two Right Decisions

One person said that Chuff was right to join the convent but also right to leave. They wrote: “She made the right decision both times. Sometimes you don’t know something’s not for you until you try. She gave it her best and learned along the way. That’s what we’re supposed to do.”

Others Felt Differently

Others felt very differently. “Being young, we sometimes make bad choices. Thankfully you saw the wisdom in reversing your decision and started your own life,” one person said. “You made a very silly decision but then you made a really great one,” another wrote.

A Very Kind Message

Some people left very kind messages. One individual said: “Carrie-Eileen, you went into religious life with a heart ready to serve God. You did not fail, the Order failed you. I experienced a lot of that type of thinking when I was a kid growing up in Catholic school.”

Wicked Ideas About Sinful Behavior

The commenter continued: “Sometimes the nuns’ ideas about sinful behavior were more wicked than we mortals would contemplate! God is using you now to minister to your husband and the beautiful little ones God blessed you with. They are your ministry.”

People Were Baffled

Others couldn’t wrap their heads around the rule regarding tampons. One person said: “They said tampons were inappropriate? That is ridiculously outdated. How on Earth are they inappropriate? I’m glad she got out. Sounds like a cult if you ask me.”

Learning Life Skills

Some people said that Chuff’s experience as a nun likely taught her some life skills. One person wrote: “[Being a nun] is one she can scratch off her bucket list and not many people can. I’m sure it made her a better person and great wife and mother.”

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
