A poll has provided insights into how Republican primary voters perceive the criminal charges against former President Donald Trump. It revealed that a significant portion of GOP voters do not consider these charges relevant in regard to his ability to hold office.
District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s Case
In the case brought forward by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, which alleges 34 counts of falsification of business records against Trump, 70% of respondents didn’t believe these charges impact his fitness for the presidency. Only 8% said that the charges should disqualify him, while 20% said they cast doubts on his ability to serve as president.
Special Counsel Jack Smith’s Investigation
Regarding Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into classified documents taken to Mar-a-Lago, 64% of GOP voters didn’t believe the charges call into question Trump’s fitness for office. A mere 13% said the charges should bar him from the White House, while another 24% thought they cast doubt on his ability to serve.
Attempting to Overturn the 2020 Election
The poll also assessed reactions to charges alleging Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Of likely GOP primary voters, 64% didn’t think the allegations affect his adequacy to lead. Only 17% said the allegations should bar him from the Oval Office, while 19% thought they cast doubts on his adequacy.
Trump and His Aides in Numerous Crimes
In the case alleging that Trump and his aides committed various crimes, including a RICO violation, 64% of respondents didn’t think the charges should affect his ability to become POTUS once more. The remaining 36% argued that they should either disqualify him or, at the very least, raise questions about his fitness to lead.

One person said they felt like we’re living in another world – one where people don’t mind criminals being in power. They wrote: “We’re definitely living in an alternative universe where people are perfectly okay with supporting a criminal as their presidential candidate.”
Truth, Honor, and Ethics
Others discussed ethics and the perceived lack of morality among those who would like to see a potential felon as president. “This says more about GOP voters than it does about Trump. Truth, honor, [and] ethics mean nothing to them. They are, as Hillary Clinton said, a basketful of deplorables,” one person said.
Ethics No Longer Exist
Another person wrote: “What’s happening to the people of this country? Wrong is right and right is wrong. Ethics no longer exist. The law is no longer respected! Amorality is now the norm. What are the chances that we will still be standing when the carnage is over?”
An Optimistic View
A fair few commenters expressed optimistic views. One such individual said: “He has no business running or being in the White House ever again after the insurrection he caused. I have faith that people will be smart enough not to vote for this lying con man.”
The Party of Law and Order
Another individual said: “Funny how the GOP used to be the ‘law and order’ party and told us how ethics, honesty, and integrity were important. Not anymore. Supporting and enabling an endlessly lying traitor shows exactly how far they have sunk.”
The End of America
Some people speculated. One such commenter wrote: “I sincerely hope that my fellow citizens continue to see through him. A future with Trump will be the end of America. Dividing us is what Vladimir hired him to do. Do the research. Their relationship goes back decades. He has been promised the top spot if he brings our country down. Those are facts.”
Above the Law
Plenty of people talked about how Trump seemingly believes he’s above the law. “These indictments are no joke. He is criminally charged with serious offenses against the government. He needs to face accountability for his behavior and complete disregard for the law. He actually thinks he is above the law,” one person said.
The Magnitude of Trump’s Crimes
Others said that the opinions of Republicans may well change after Trump’s trials. One commenter wrote: “Wait until the trials and televised evidence. Yes, it is easy to excuse when you believe the ‘picking on me’ foolishness, not so much when you see the magnitude of the crimes and evidence.”
Trying to Falsify Election Results
For the most part, people simply expressed their shock. One person said: “Astounding that a person can be charged with trying to get election officials to falsify election results and people think it isn’t relevant to fitness for office.”
An Embarrassment and a Traitor
Others declined to comment on the poll’s results and merely left their opinions of Trump. One such individual said: “He’s an embarrassment to our nation and should never be able to hold a public office again. ‘Traitor’ is another word that comes to mind.”
A MAGA Opinion
Fans of Trump held very different opinions. Sarcastically, one wrote: “What? You mean those completely corrupt indictments with no legal basis whatsoever and motivated by the desire to politically persecute and arrest your political opposition backfired? How is this possible? What a complete surprise!”
