“Organized Religion Is a Scam”: Woman Walks Out of Church After Pastor Claims Monetary Donations Lead To Answered Prayers

For Christians, moving to a new area often means seeking out new places of worship. It can be a difficult task and such was the case for a 23-year-old woman who shared her experience on social media. While her initial church visit was met with warmth and hospitality, an unexpected turn during the sermon raised questions about church etiquette and personal convictions.

A New Church

The young woman’s journey began when she decided to move from her previous church due to the impracticality of the lengthy commute. Armed with curiosity and a desire to connect with a new congregation, she conducted research on churches in her vicinity. After careful consideration, she chose one that seemed promising and attended a service.

The Uncomfortable Sermon

The visit seemed promising. The congregation welcomed her warmly and the atmosphere was nice. However, the mood shifted as the sermon began and the pastor took an unexpected turn by emphasizing a theological perspective linking financial contributions to prayer fulfillment and life fulfillment. According to the woman’s account, the pastor suggested that monetary contributions to the church were prerequisites for answered prayers and a fulfilling life.

The Dilemma and Departure

Unsettled by the pastor’s message, and unwilling to compromise her convictions and beliefs, the woman made the decision to quietly walk out. Her departure, though cautious, caught the attention of the small congregation due to the intimate setting. “This particular church is very popular but the location I attended was small so you could see me walk out. I just walked out quietly and did not disturb the sermon but now I am wondering if I should have just sat through it and just not [attended] again,” she wrote.

The Church Reached Out

The church reached out to the young woman just days after her departure via the information she’d provided on a guest card. The representative expressed that her walkout had been perceived as rude and disruptive to the service. The woman wrote: “A representative of the church reached out to me. They got my number from the guest card. She stated that it was rude of me [to walk out] during the sermon.”

A Clash of Values

The incident sparked an internal struggle for the young woman and highlighted the complexity of balancing individual beliefs, church etiquette, and social norms. She grappled with a sense of personal integrity for acting on her convictions coupled with a fleeting worry that she might have transgressed cultural norms of politeness and respect within the church setting.

She Took to Social Media

Unsure about whether or not she was in the right, the young woman took to social media to seek the opinions of strangers. “Part of me feels like I did [the] right thing but another part of me wonders if I should have better manners,” she wrote. Responders were overwhelmingly on her side.

The Internet Responded

The internet responded and some people went as far as to accuse the woman’s church of abuse. “Churches soliciting money and threatening people with the prospect of going to Heaven is so abusive,” one individual said. “There’s a church near me that requires people to give them access to 10% of their check and still donate cash every Sunday,” another person replied to the aforementioned commenter. “That’s a cult,” a third added.

The Young Woman Was Polite

People reassured the woman and many said she was polite in her handling of the situation. One person said: “You’re trying to find the right church for you and they made it very evidently clear that it isn’t the right kind of environment you’re looking for. You politely left so as to not waste their time.”

Jesus Would Be Appalled

Some people turned to the Bible to comfort the woman. One individual said: “Not religious myself but I grew up in a religious town [and] in a religious school and I am pretty sure that the Bible says that Jesus chased people out of temples for trying to make a profit in the house of God. Go somewhere else. That isn’t a church, it’s a scam.”

Religion Is a Business

Some commenters criticized religion as a whole. “Religion is a business. Do with that what you will,” one person wrote. “Welcome to what is most Christian churches,” another said. “Organized religion is a scam. I’d advise you to get out now and focus on your personal spirituality and relationship with God,” a third added.

Some Doubted the Story

Others doubted the woman’s story. “Nobody went and found your phone number, a total stranger, to call you and say that you were rude for walking out of church early. How bored and craving attention are you that you need to make up [stuff] like this? Is your life really that bleak?” one person wrote.

A Very Intrusive Church

Some people said the woman would’ve still received an angry phone call had she waited out the service and never returned. One commenter said: “You would still have received the same call in a different context a few weeks later with them claiming it was rude of you to attend just once and never return. Imagine being this intrusive, rude, and frankly controlling to someone who isn’t even a member. Their response to you just proved you did the right thing by leaving and not giving them a minute more of your time. What on earth gives them the right to call and scold a grown adult?”

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
