Mitt Romney has lashed out at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, claiming he “looks like he’s got a toothache” when he smiles.
Not Warmth at All
Recently, a preview of McKay Coppins’ biography of Romney was shared. In it, the Utah Republican claimed that DeSantis appears to be in pain when he interacts with voters. “He looks like he’s got a toothache. There’s just no warmth at all,” he said.
Smarter Than Trump
Romney went on to say that DeSantis is “smarter than Trump” and speculated about whether there may be “peril to having someone who’s smart and pulling in a direction that’s dangerous.”
Enacting Conservative Policy
In response, a spokesperson for DeSantis pointed to a social media post that claimed the governor had “enacted conservative policy instead of just talking about it.” DeSantis, albeit by quite a distance, is second to Trump in polls regarding the GOP presidential nomination.
A Socially Awkward Governor
DeSantis has become known for his social awkwardness and author Michael Wolff even alleged that the governor kicked Tucker Carlson’s dog. It’s worth noting that both DeSantis and Carlson denied this claim. “This is absurd. He never touched my dog, obviously,” the latter said.
In Another Excerpt
In another excerpt of the biography, Romney said he doesn’t “know that I can disrespect someone more than J.D. Vance,” who later said that he has no issue working with people who badmouth me in public.”
The Internet’s Response
News of Romney’s snide jab was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people agreed. A fair few commenters speculated about the Florida governor’s seemingly psychopathic tendencies. Others told people to worry about more important things, like his fascist beliefs.
Romney’s Lack of Warmth
Some commenters, while agreeing with Romney, analyzed the Utah Republican’s demeanor. These individuals often called him a hypocrite, pointing to his own lack of warmth and genuine energy.
DeSantis’ Anti-Democratic Tendencies
One social media commenter said: “Stop attacking Ron DeSantis for his lack of warmth and charm. Instead, attack him for his incompetence, his [insane] policy ideas, and his anti-democratic tendencies.”
Toothache Is Apt
Plenty of people agreed with and praised Romeny’s assessment. One such individual said: “He has absolutely nailed it there. I always thought he looks like he has hemorrhoids when he tries to smile but toothache is much more apt!”
The Pursuit of Unquestioned Power
One person tried to explain why DeSantis’ smile is so bizarre. “Because he’s a straight-up psychopath,” they wrote. “As a Floridian, I have no doubt that this is true. He is unable to connect with anyone. He has no friends in Tallahassee, only people who fear him and his wife, who is cut from the same cloth. There is nothing they hold sacred other than the pursuit of unquestioned power,” another commenter replied.
Romney Isn’t Known for His Warmth
Others implied that Romney’s words might have been a bit hypocritical. “That is pretty bad coming from someone not known for their warmth as well,” one person said. “It’s like Trump telling him his tan is too fake… and Romney’s not even wrong,” another added.
A Bit Rich
Echoing the aforementioned individuals, another person said: “Romney’s not wrong but let’s not forget that Mitt wasn’t exactly known for his own warmth and relatability during his own presidential campaign. He does have a point but it’s a bit rich coming from him.”
A Pro-Authoritarian Party
Another commenter wrote: “Romney gets a little more praise for telling the truth only because most Republicans have a complicated relationship with the truth and believe in alternative facts. Mitt Romney says that Tucker Carlson is turning the GOP into ‘the pro-Russian, pro-authoritarian party.’”
DeSantis Is Fake
Others claimed that DeSantis feels nothing: “Everything about DeSantis is fake. It’s all calculated. He has no joy in his life, except when he was at Guantanamo watching detainees be tortured. Everything else… all calculated for running for office. That’s why his smile and mannerisms are robotic. He feels nothing. His one mission is to be president.”
Missing Mitt Romney

Others left messages for supporters of DeSantis. One such commenter said: “If you can’t see straight through Ron’s insincerity, look at yourself in the mirror… but you’d probably miss that one too.”
Manufactured Laughs and Smiles
Another person wrote: “Pretty much sums up DeSantis as a whole. There is not an honest bone in his body. You can tell his laughter and his smiles are all manufactured. Humans are pretty good at telling genuine laughs and smiles versus whatever DeSantis does.”
