It was more than just a remark for Trump fans who were gathered 29 miles away at the New England Sports Center in Derry, New Hampshire, where the mogul was scheduled to appear in a few hours. They used it as a rallying cry and a major justification for their intention to support the businessman who is now running for president in the primaries later this year.

Speaking with voters in line for the event, USA TODAY found that many supported Trump in the 2024 contest both in spite of and as a result of his indictments in four current criminal proceedings. A 65-year-old Concord, New Hampshire, child support officer named Chris Wood stated, “He’s the only man to do the job that’s in front of us.” Wood was at the front of a line extending the whole length of the indoor sports facility. “I won’t stand for anybody being persecuted the way he’s been persecuted. He doesn’t deserve it. The least I can do is give him my vote, but damn, he’s getting it,” she remarked.

Days after receiving devastating news in his Fulton County, Georgia lawsuit regarding an alleged plot to rig the 2020 election results, Trump filed his paperwork and had his rally. In the well-known case, Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, two of his former attorneys, agreed to plea bargains in exchange for testifying against their co-defendants, who may include Trump, in their trials.

Both left- and right-wing politicians have drawn attention to the criminal accusations in their alerts to voters about the potential consequences of another Trump administration. For example, during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, former Representative Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., referred to Trump as the “single most dangerous threat” confronting the nation.

Sen. Although supporters of Trump claim that his occasionally blustery and vulgar speaking style isn’t what inspires them, they still don’t necessarily enjoy it. “I mean, he’s a jerk. Nobody likes him,” according to Epping, New Hampshire resident Cathlene Harvey, 73, who also told USA TODAY that she thinks he was one of the greatest US presidents. “He’s taken care of everything that he promised he was going to take care of and I felt safe while he was president.”

Audrey Wendell, a political tourist who traveled two hours from her home in East Providence, Rhode Island, to hear Trump speak, was among the many rally goers who had the same emotion. “I have always supported Trump,” Wendell remarked. “He is a man for the people.” She feels that Trump addresses the most important concerns facing the American people, in contrast to other political contenders.

When it comes to the percentage of people who heat their houses with oil, New Hampshire comes in second place nationwide. Additionally, a lot of locals have noticed changes in energy prices firsthand. Derry residents Ken and Diane Galvin, who want to retire in the near future, said that part of the reason they favor Trump is the high cost of gasoline. Diane Galvin expressed special concern about the effect energy expenses will have on her two 30-year-old children.

According to Galvin, “everything is so high now that they have to dip into their savings.” And they put in a lot of effort at work. During his campaign path, including a rally stop in New Hampshire, Trump said that if elected to a second term, he would bring the United States to “energy dominance,” which would save expenses. “When I step in as president we will unleash the most powerful weapon: Drill baby drill,” he declared to raucous applause and whistles from the MAGA-clad assembly crammed inside the sports complex.

Voters throughout the nation have responded favorably to Trump’s proposals for an agenda that puts America first ever since the early stages of his 2016 campaign. This year is no different as the battles in Israel and the Ukraine continue. In an attack on the Biden administration’s foreign policy goals, Claudia Miller remarked, “We’re borrowing billions of dollars to give other people money.” She expressed her preference for the next U.S. president to concentrate more on creating employment for citizens of this nation, as did other voters USA TODAY talked with at the Trump event.

Furthermore, during his speech in Derry, Trump did not declare that his government would completely renounce its foreign obligations, even though he has consistently upheld his America First policy. Amidst thunderous cheers, Trump addressed the American people, saying, “To every American who is terrified that Crooked Joe’s weakness will cause catastrophic global conflict, which it already has, I make you this promise: as your president, I will restore peace through strength —and I will prevent World War III.”

Trump made history in August when he became the first US president to ever have his mugshot taken. While he was being detained at an Atlanta prison for allegedly attempting to have the Georgia 2020 election results reversed, his mugshot was taken. Fulton County District counsel Fani Willis’s choice to have a mugshot taken was described by his counsel, Alina Habba, as “a bit of an ego trip.”
