“Single Most Dangerous Threat”: Liz Cheney Criticizes Trump and Hints at Possible Presidential Bid to Counter Him

Liz Cheney, a moderate Republican who lost her congressional seat due to her opposition to Donald Trump’s presidency, has stated that Trump poses a significant threat to the United States as he seeks a return to the Oval Office. In her words, “He cannot be the next president because if he is, all of the things that he attempted to do but was stopped from doing by responsible people … he will do. There will be no guardrails. And everyone has been left warned.”

Cheney’s strong comments come as the former president faces over 90 criminal charges, including subversion of the 2020 election, retention of government secrets, and hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels. He is also dealing with civil lawsuits related to his business affairs and a rape allegation that a judge has found to be “substantially true.”

Despite his low popularity with the general public, Trump maintains a substantial lead in polling for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election. Significantly, this polling advantage is sustained by a collection of core supporters who believe in his ability to lead the nation. Political analysts have identified a few key factors driving this continued loyalty.

Concern For The Future Of America

Cheney’s remarks reveal her concern, particularly given her role as the vice-chair of the US House committee that investigated the deadly Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. She and her colleagues recommended that the justice department file criminal charges against Trump in connection with the Capitol uprising, leading to four indictments against him since March.

“After January 6 … there can be no question that he will unravel the institutions of our democracy,” Cheney warned, referencing the desperate but unsuccessful attack by Trump supporters to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. She added, “So we are facing a moment in American politics where we have to set aside partisanship and make sure that people who believe in the Constitution come together to prevent him from ever setting foot near the Oval Office again.”

A Comeback For Cheney?

Cheney’s recommendation as part of the House Capitol attack committee was one of her final acts in Congress before losing her seat in January. She was defeated in a Republican primary by Harriet Hageman, a candidate supported by Trump, who went on to win a runoff election and succeed Cheney as the House representative for their district. However, it now looks like Cheney is looking to make a comeback.

Fear Of Further Violence

Cheney warned that the rhetoric Trump uses, specifically the posts he publishes attacking those indicting him, could spark violence that surpasses that seen on January 6, 2021. Cheney added, “Now, that kind of acceptance of violence is completely inappropriate and dangerous in our politics”. It was expressed that serious individuals who comprehend and recognize the global threats we’re facing, as well as the dangers presented by Donald Trump and his supporters, are urgently needed.

In addition to her concerns about Trump, Cheney subtly indicated a potential interest in becoming a part of the multitude of hopefuls set to challenge Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential race. In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper Cheney said “We’re going to see what happens. We’re going to see how things unfold. I think Donald Trump is the single most dangerous threat we face. I would imagine that there will be a number of other candidates in the race,” Tapper followed up, “Would you be one of them?” Cheney replied “I’ll tell you what I’m definitely going to do. I’m going to spend the next year between now and the election certainly helping to elect serious people, helping to elect sane people.” Although she did not rule out a potential run for office.

Attack On McCarthy

Trump wasn’t the sole target of Cheney’s criticism. She accused former Speaker Kevin McCarthy of being the driving force behind the current chaos in House leadership. She emphasized his support for members who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election and his apparent indifference to the events of January 6.

Cheney pointed out how McCarthy’s decisions, particularly in the aftermath of the 2020 election and the January 6 incidents, have eroded democracy. She condemned his endorsement of specific members, whom she labeled as “white supremacists” and “anti-Semitic.”

Furthermore, she drew attention to the rise in threats of violence against Republicans amid the leadership turmoil, attributing these threats to the spread of misinformation by former President Trump regarding his supposed victory in the 2020 election.

“Its A Disgrace”

Cheney also commented on the struggles within the Republican Party to appoint a replacement for Kevin McCarthy after far-right members engineered his removal as House speaker on October 3. She noted that McCarthy and the first two House Republicans who sought to succeed him, Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan, all objected to certifying Trump’s 2020 defeat. “So it’s not a surprise that we are where we are,” Cheney said. “But it’s a disgrace, and it’s an embarrassment.”
