Laffey isn’t only dropping out of the presidential race – he also intends to register himself as an independent. He shared concerns about Donald Trump’s influence and described the criminal defendant as “an authoritarian figure getting stronger.”

A Far-Right Agenda

The former mayor went on to discuss concerns about the GOP’s future. His worries truly reflect those of many Republicans across the country who are uncomfortable with the current far-right agenda.

A Short Break

Although he’s leaving the GOP, Laffey doesn’t believe his political journey is at an end. He intends to take a short break before continuing his political endeavors. “You haven’t heard the last from me,” he told ABC News.

The Conservative Political Action Conference

Laffey has also expressed concerns about the direction of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). He explained his worries in a statement, citing potential guests and suggesting that the CPAC is moving too far away from its supposed values.

A Concern for Christians

Laffey said that the GOP is far too easily influenced by Donald Trump. He called the party a “laughing stock” and discussed the court verdict that found Trump liable for sexual battery. Laffey said that the GOP’s response was far tamer than he expected and that this verdict should have been a concern for Christians.

Trump in the Polls

Despite the aforementioned verdict and the 91 criminal charges Trump is currently facing, the former president has a lot of support from within the Republican Party. Polls currently suggest the criminal defendant is leading with 49% of GOP voters.

The Internet’s Response

News of Laffey’s withdrawal was shared across the internet and, while many people hadn’t even heard of him, social media commenters had a lot to say. Plenty of people said he was right, pointing to Trump’s fascist tendencies and the GOP’s refusal to condemn them.

Copying Hitler’s Tactics

Others talked about Trump’s “erratic” behavior and said it’ll undoubtedly cost the Republican Party the election. Plenty of people compared the former president to Adolf Hitler, pointing to his adoration of dictators and copying of Hitler’s tactics.

Trump vs. Hitler

While some individuals left multiple paragraphs explaining their problems with the current GOP and Donald Trump, others left very short and blunt comments. Often, these comments were far more effective in conveying a message. Describing the former president, one person said: “A Hitler in the making.”

The Party of Fascism

Others made comments about the Republican Party and its values. “The GOP would rather not have decent people repping it. That’s pretty obvious,” one commenter said. “I haven’t heard of this guy but it sounds like the GOP isn’t the party for him. They’re the party of fascism,” another wrote.

Catching the Rest of the World

Echoing the aforementioned individual, another person said: “The GOP is now just a fascist movement. It will end like all others and we’ll finally be rid of them so the U.S. can catch the rest of the world.”

A Lifelong Republican

Another commenter wrote: “I’m a lifelong Republican and I don’t consider Donald Trump a true Republican. He is just Trump. In 2015, when he decided to run for President, he knew he needed to win a party’s nomination. He chose the Republican Party because, at the time, there were many candidates and no clear frontrunner. The Democratic Party was fully behind Hillary and the Clinton machine, so he ran as a Republican. He easily could have run as a Democrat.”

A Favorite President

The commenter continued: “I’ve voted Republican my entire life since I was old enough to vote. Reagan was and is my favorite president of my lifetime. I was too young to vote for Reagan, so the first president I voted for was George Bush in 1988. Every Republican president I voted for promised the things I wanted and believed in but most of those things were never done, empty promises except for the occasional tax cut.”

Adolf Hitler’s Tactics

Another person said: “Laffey is absolutely correct. Just look at Hitler as an example. Look at his tactics. Trump is literally copying all of them to a T. He wants to be a fascist, authoritarian dictator. He even openly praises dictators.”

Fanning the Flame

The words “Laffey” and “correct” were repeated throughout comment sections. Another individual wrote: “Laffey is 100% correct. The GOP fanned the flame and now it’s out of control. They have no one to blame but themselves.”

The Trump Crime Family

Some commenters said that Republicans in government aren’t brave enough to stand up to Trump. One commenter wrote: “The GOP are the snowflakes of our government. Wimps and cowards who cover up the truth to allow the Trump crime family to keep screwing Americans.”

Trump’s Erratic Behavior

Another person said: “Donald Trump’s erratic behavior and increasingly violent rhetoric have already driven many Americans away from the Republican Party and these factors will continue through the next year to assure a Democratic victory in 2024.”

A MAGA Opinion

Donald Trump’s fans weren’t very happy with Laffey’s remarks. One person, clearly not seeing the irony of their words, said: “Another pathetic attempt to make President Trump look bad. Here’s to all the unprogrammed people seeing through this nonsense.”
