She said: “Adolescence is hard and puberty is hard. What if you’re going through the wrong puberty? What if you, inside, feel that you’re female but now you’re going through a male puberty?”
Levine Didn’t Discover Her Gender Until Adulthood
Levine, likely due to a widespread lack of education when it comes to transgender issues, didn’t discover her true gender until she was in her 50s. Despite this, she advocates for providing transgender children with gender-affirming care and mental health support.
Reactions Were Mixed
Reactions to Levine’s comments were mixed. Some people argued that children can’t go through the wrong puberty and refused to acknowledge the differences between biological sex and gender identity. Others supported Levine and applauded her for her activism.

Levine’s Comments Attracted Transphobes
Levine’s comments, unfortunately, attracted transphobes. People misgendered her, claimed transgender people are evil, and denied modern scientific and medical research. “Bodies don’t go through the ‘wrong’ puberty. They go through the puberty your biological body is assigned to. Thinking you’re a woman or a girl while in a biologically male body is the problem,” one individual wrote. Another claimed Levine should be put in prison for her comments, evidently only believing in free speech for people with conservative views.

The transphobes on Twitter were in an echo chamber. Barely anyone was correcting the misinformation they spewed, which meant they had no opportunity to open their minds, learn, and grow. “Liar. Manipulator. Evil clown. Embarrassment,” one individual wrote, describing Levine.
People Shared Misinformation
The immense amount of misinformation shared on Twitter was astounding. “Children go through the puberty they were born to go through. Children shouldn’t make or be made to make adult decisions that they will have to live with for possibly 70+ years,” one individual wrote, referring to puberty blockers – which are 100% reversible.
Others Called for Levine to Be Sacked
Some Twitter users called for Levine to be sacked for her beliefs and gender identity. “Levine has a right to think and do as [she] pleases but to be in the US government promoting [her] garbage is a disgrace to all Americans,” one individual wrote, using the incorrect pronouns. They didn’t criticize government officials who promote Christianity which, unlike puberty blockers, has no scientific backing.
Some Twitter Users Did Manage to Disagree Politely
Despite the abundance of transphobia, some Twitter users did manage to disagree with Levine politely and non-aggressively. “Rachel, do you ever listen to yourself?” one individual wrote, disagreeing without deadnaming or otherwise misgendering Levine.
Others Came to Her Defence
Others came to Levine’s defense. Some simply expressed their agreement with her words, some provided evidence in support of puberty blockers, and some told personal stories. Some even tried to educate misinformed individuals but, most of the time, their efforts were in vain.
