Trump’s lawyers have put forward some undoubtedly ridiculous arguments over the past few months. Now, they’re repeating themselves – and Judge Chutkan reportedly rolled her eyes after hearing their latest claim.
A Recent Hearing
Speaking to MSNBC, Hugo Lowell shed some light on the behavior of the former president’s lawyers in a recent hearing. According to him, they reiterated the argument that Biden was “coming after” the defendant. Clearly exasperated, Judge Chutkan reportedly put her face in her hands.
A Client Like Trump
Lowell said the judge “was sympathetic to some of the Trump lawyers’ arguments” before going on to add that “they were making the case that, you know, being a defense lawyer is difficult, especially with a client like Trump.”
An Exasperated Judge
Lowell, a reporter for The Guardian, continued: “At other times, I think she kind of grew exasperated by all the discussions about politics. At one point, she had her face in her hands and rolled her eyes when there was another discussion about the Biden administration coming after Trump.”
Lawyer John Lauro
Further, the reporter said: “I think Trump’s lawyer, John Lauro, picked up on that a little bit and shifted course at the hearing. So clearly that was something he thought was gonna be a loser and changed tack.”
Keeping Politics Out of It
According to reports, Chutkan doesn’t want the 2024 presidential election to influence the D.C. case in any way. Andrew Feinberg, a journalist for The Independent, said that the judge made sure to repeatedly tell Lauro that “the existence of a political campaign is not going to have any bearing on my decision. I intend to keep politics out of this.”
A Biased Perspective
Trump is advocating for the removal of Judge Chutkan from the case. The former president claims that her previous comments about his involvement in the Jan 6 Capitol attack indicate a biased perspective.
The Internet’s Response
News of Judge Chutkan’s exasperated eye-rolling was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people found it quite funny. A lot of commenters said they could hardly blame the judge and that they’d do a worse job of hiding their emotions if they were in her position.
A Ridiculous Argument
One social media commenter said: “I can only surmise that the argument was so ridiculous that she could not help but roll her eyes and put her head in her hands. I can imagine she was in awe of the attorney’s audacity to give the argument with a straight face.”
A Clown Show
Replying to the aforementioned individual, another person said: “It wasn’t that it is ridiculous – it is – it’s the fact they have tried this same argument over and over. She is tired of their clown show.”
A Day Job
Others said that Trump’s “day job” should have no influence on the trial: “I don’t see how the fact that he’s running for public office has anything to do with his trials. Everyone has a day job and courts typically do not work around your personal schedule.”
A Delay Game
Plenty of people claimed that Trump’s lawyers were making ridiculous arguments in an attempt to delay his conviction. One commenter wrote: “It is a delay game. He’s guilty and, when this is over, he should pay for the waste of time it took to prosecute him.”
A Very Hard Job
Quite a few commenters sympathized with Chutkan. One person said: “Chutkan has a very hard job in trying to keep politics out of the courtroom. This is all about the personal actions of Trump and no one else.”
Recycling Old Defenses
Others suggested that Trump’s legal team was reusing old defenses because they had no idea what else to do: “When you have no defense, your only play is to recycle prior items that have been thrown out. They know he is going to be convicted.”
Donald Trump’s Plan
One person speculated about Trump’s long-term plan. They said: “If Donnie can just operate his clown car circus until he hopefully gets reelected, he can pardon himself of the hundreds of charges against him. It’s an uphill battle. He’ll blame everybody but himself.”
Indicted by a Jury
Pointing out that the former president would have been indicted by a grand jury, another individual wrote: “Trump is the one who is stuck on blaming the Biden administration for being prosecuted and his attorneys never fail to harp on that belief. Jack Smith was appointed by the DOJ to gather and review evidence, yes. Donald Trump was indicted by a jury, not Biden or Smith.”
Guilty as Sin
Others criticized the former president’s legal team for taking on the job: “Not one of Trump’s cases is political but when your client is guilty as sin, a lawyer doesn’t have much to work with. Shame on them for taking the job.”
Like All MAGA Arguments
Another commenter wrote: “This is like all MAGA arguments. It makes sense to the Trump supporters and they all believe it word for word but when you get into a court of law, it sounds as ridiculous as it is.”
A MAGA Opinion
Despite all of the aforementioned criticism of Trump, fans of the defendant did weigh in every now and then. One said: “The judge, who is supposed to be impartial, no doubt cannot wait to find Trump guilty of something, even though the whole thing is bogus.”
