Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, has addressed concerns about President Joe Biden’s age.
Age Concerns in Recent Polls
A poll has revealed that 77% of Americans believe Biden, at 80 years old, may be too old to effectively serve another four-year term – and 69% of Democrats expressed similar concerns. Another poll echoed the findings, with 73% of voters, including two-thirds of Democrats, suggesting that Biden might be too old to run again in 2024.
A Recurring Criticism
Jean-Pierre said that she’s frequently presented with questions about Biden’s age and pointed out that he faced similar criticism in 2019, 2020, and 2022. She emphasized that each time, the president has proven his critics wrong by achieving significant accomplishments. The press secretary went on to highlight Biden’s record-breaking 80 million votes in the 2020 election, which surpassed any other presidential ticket in history.
Bringing Both Sides Together
Jean-Pierre said: “I get asked this question about once a week. In 2019, he got the same criticism. In 2020, he got the same criticism. In 2022, he got the same criticism. Every time, he beats the naysayers. You look at his record, you look at how he’s been able to bring both sides together to get some really important things done. That matters.”
Responding to Age Concerns
When questioned about why Biden’s age remains a concern despite his impressive legislative record, Jean-Pierre said that they would continue to focus on the president’s historic achievements and his wealth of experience and wisdom.
Understanding the Age Question
Jean-Pierre said: “You know, I get the question on age. Certainly, we all do. But what we’re going to continue to talk about is the record that this president has had. It’s been a historic record. You know, I can’t speak to every American out there and their concerns.”
President Biden’s Record
The press secretary continued her explanation. She said: “What I can speak to is what this president has done, right? I can speak to his experience, I can speak to the wisdom that he has, I can speak to his record.”
Hillary Clinton’s Support
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, aged 75, voiced her support for Biden in a similar way. She explained that he’s accomplished significant goals, despite his age, and also alluded to the “alternative” in a likely reference to Donald Trump.
The Terrifying Alternative
Clinton expressed the aforementioned view on MSNBC. She said: “People say to me, ‘Well, he’s old.’ Yeah, that’s right – but look at what he’s gotten done and then, if that’s not enough for you, look at the alternative.”
Legitimate but Not Significant
Biden’s age and whether or not he’s capable of running for another term is a common debate topic across social media. One person said: “I guess the thing that bothers me about this issue is that we already knew about it when he was elected three years ago. Sure, it’s a legitimate concern but I don’t think it’s a significant one.”
Giving up the Incumbency Advantage
The commenter continued: “The alternative is to have him step down, giving away the Dems’ incumbency advantage, [making way for] Kamala Harris which is who would take his spot in the race if Biden passed away anyway.”
A Lose-Lose Situation
The commenter went on to express concerns about a lose-lose situation. They wrote: “Having an open primary in that event would probably give the White House to the GOP/Trump. But you can make a good case that it would be the case if they just stuck with Harris too.”
Stay the Course
The commenter concluded: “Yes, his age is a concern but there’s just about nothing we can do about it without risking the White House going to the GOP/Trump. We knew this risk four years ago. We might as well just stay the course since the alternative is much riskier. That’s why it’s not a significant issue to me.”
Trump Can’t Finish a Point
Another commenter wrote: “I just find it weird that we have a couple of years of Biden sounding somewhat senile versus more than twice as many years of Trump sounding senile – and people can’t seem to tell. Trump cannot read off a teleprompter. Trump cannot finish a point or thought without rambling into another.”
Trump’s Inability to Communicate
The commenter continued: “Trump is even more incohesive if you try reading a transcript of one of his ‘speeches’ – and this isn’t a new trend. He’s been like this since he started running for president. I’m not even talking about the craziness of the substance that he’s talking about, I’m talking about his inability to actually communicate intelligibly. It’s totally unfair to criticize Biden’s speaking capabilities while giving Trump a pass.”
Trump vs. Biden
Another individual said: “Biden is old. He looks and acts old. I don’t think he has what it takes for 5.5 more years of this. It’s crazy but what else is there to do? It’s going to be Biden vs. Trump again and neither of them is really capable of being president until 2028. It’s not right-wing propaganda to admit this.”
A Popular Vice President
Others suggested solutions. One individual wrote: “Biden having a well-liked VP would go a long way to assuaging this concern. Say what you will about Kamala but she polls very poorly in terms of favorability and that definitely hurts Biden on this subject as people don’t want to see her in the Oval Office. There is no question that she could not win the [election] herself.”
The GOP’s Questionable Decisions
Some people said that Democrat voters are lucky. One person wrote: “Honestly, we’re lucky the GOP is too stupid to nominate someone younger and more moderate than Trump. Biden’s age will be so much less of a factor because of Trump.”
Health and Age
Others discussed health and its relation to age. “Age is one factor among many for geriatric health. The best predictor of mental decline amongst aging people is a lack of exercise, so amongst his peers age-wise – McConnell, Trump, Bernie, Feinstein – Biden is probably the best,” one person said.
