“He Used Us to Win the White House”: Evangelicals Are Turning Their Backs on Donald Trump, Dooming His Campaign

While the polls are currently looking good for Donald Trump, things might not stay this way for much longer. Bob Vander Plaats, head of a Christian conservative group called The Family Leader, has said that evangelicals are becoming “exhausted” by the former president.

“[Evangelicals] are very appreciative of the former president but they are exhausted as well,” Vander Plaats said. He also previously called Trump out for his language and behavior. Moreover, he believes Iowa will decide the criminal defendant’s political fate.

In a recent visit to the aforementioned state, Trump garnered mixed reactions from evangelicals. Some cheered him on while others booed and even swore at him. Vander Plaats said: “Iowa is tailor-made to upend Trump. If he loses Iowa, there’s a competitive nomination process. If he wins Iowa, I think it’s over.”

Using Evangelicals to Win

Plenty of people from within the evangelical community have criticized Trump. Mike Evans, who was a member of a group of evangelicals who met with the former president at the White House, said: “He used us to win the White House. We had to close our mouths and eyes when he said things that horrified us. I cannot do that anymore.”

Life Outreach International’s James Robinson said that Trump’s ego may be getting in the way of his political aspirations. Moreover, conservative columnist Everett Piper said that if the criminal defendant were to win the Republican nomination, it could cause huge problems for the party.

Evangelicals and Abortion

Abortion is a big issue for evangelicals, who often believe in prioritizing fetuses over the lives of women. Rather than keeping this religious belief to themselves, many of them wish to impose it on everybody else. A key factor in diminishing evangelical support may be that Trump has seemingly been reluctant to clarify his stance on a federal ban.

Trump likely knows that evangelical support in Iowa is vital to his campaign. Other Republican candidates, such as Ron DeSantis, also know this and are making sure to put an emphasis on “religious freedom” to win them over.

The Internet’s Response

News of Vander Plaats’ remarks was shared across the internet and people flocked to comment sections to give their views. For the most part, people criticized Trump and some even pointed out that he blatantly isn’t religious.

Criticizing Evangelical Christians

Some people even criticized evangelicals too, with many saying they aren’t real Christians as they don’t follow Christ’s teachings of love, respect, and acceptance. Trump’s fans weighed in from time to time, with one even referring to him as a “prophet.”

MAGA Evangelicals and Hypocrisy

One social media commenter said: “Shame on them for having ever supported Trump in the first place. How you can preach love yet support and promote hatred is too hypocritical for any decent person.”

Trump’s Not a Good Pick

Another individual, still discussing Trump, said: “Yes, a sense of decency seems to be missing in that one. If you wouldn’t hold him up as a role model for your children to follow, he’s probably not a good pick.”

An Intellectual and Moral Deficiency

Another person wrote: “It’s almost impossible to imagine how much of an intellectual and moral deficiency one would have to have to have ever supported the petty, vindictive, cowardly, lying, treasonous, simpleton Trump.”

Some Very Harsh Words

The commenter continued: “It’s no wonder that the educated, moral, rational, civilized people of the world look down on the vulgar, primitive, regressive American far-right with revulsion, horror, and disgust.”

Trump Is an Atheist

Others pointed out that Trump is blatantly not religious. One person said: “All evangelicals better examine what God’s word says about leadership. Is Trump the person you want as a leader when he is a non-believer? Preachers, vote on your own and quit telling your congregation how to vote. Your nonprofit status is at stake and so is your truthfulness.”

Holding a Bible Wrong

Echoing the aforementioned commenter, another person wrote: “Just curious – how could anyone ever think that Trump is a Christian? He is unable to answer the most basic of Biblical questions. Trump can’t even hold a Bible correctly. Check the footage of his march to that old church in D.C. First, he was holding the Bible upside down, then pumping the book up and down like a hand weight.”

DeSantis, Haley, Christie, and Scott

One person said the Republican Party can do better than Trump: “At this point, the GOP can do much better than Trump. There are multiple terrific candidates who are just as good on the issues as Trump and do not bring the personal turmoil [and] childish behavior that he brings – DeSantis, Haley, Christie, and Scott just to name four.”

Trump’s Destroying Democracy

Another commenter said: “[Trump is] destroying our country and our democracy. I hope that more evangelicals will see the light. They need to be more discerning. Donald Trump has always been shady and cruel. He can’t even recite a prayer. Any slightly God-loving person would take the opportunity to say something good for the whole nation and its people. He’s a con man in the full sense of the word.”

A Cult Leader

Another person said: “America and Americans are truly starting to get awfully tired of this traitor. He is now seen as a traitor and leader of a cult only. America is done with Trump and his hate-filled cult. New Hampshire is going to Christie, not Trump.”

A Prophet of the Lord

While many people criticized the former president, his supporters did weigh in every now and then. One said: “Trump is a deeply religious man and a true prophet of the Lord. All good Christian men should tailor their behavior to be just like him. Praise the Lord!”
