“Biden Will Ban Our Beer Next”: Biden’s Alcohol Czar Says US Could Recommend Limiting Beers to Two a Week

The alcohol czar appointed by President Biden has said that Americans might be advised to limit their alcohol consumption to no more than two beers per week like in Canada.

The Current Drinking Guidelines

American guidelines currently recommend a maximum of two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. The recommendations are set to be re-evaluated in 2025. In contrast, Canada’s guidelines recommend consuming no more than two drinks per week.

Alcohol Does Not Offer Physical Benefits

George Koob, the Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), called Canada’s approach a “big experiment” and said he was watching it with interest. He noted that if there are health benefits associated with lower alcohol consumption, it might prompt people to reconsider their current drinking habits.

Perceived Benefits Are Actually Related to Lifestyle

Koob said that many of the perceived benefits of alcohol are often related to dietary and lifestyle factors rather than the drink itself. He said: “Most of the benefits people attribute to alcohol, we feel they really have more to do with what someone’s eating rather than what they’re drinking. So it really has to do with the Mediterranean diet, socio-economic status that makes you able to afford that kind of diet and make your own fresh food and so forth. With this in mind, most of the benefits kind of disappear on the health side.”

How We Define Heavy Drinking

Critics, including Texas Republican Rep. Troy Nehls, expressed skepticism and disapproval of the potential guidelines. Nehls criticized the idea and claimed it’s an example of Democrats trying to control peoples’ lives. The NIAAA currently defines heavy drinking as consuming more than four drinks per day, or 14 drinks per week, for men and more than three drinks per day, or seven drinks per week, for women.

Other Regulatory Initiatives by the Biden Administration

The proposed alcohol consumption guidelines come amid other regulatory initiatives by the Biden administration, which some critics argue also impose restrictive measures on Americans’ lives. Additionally, the administration revised its earlier data analysis regarding proposed gas stove regulations, indicating lower projected consumer savings than initially anticipated.

Savings on Gas

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, a leading industry group, criticized the Department of Energy’s (DOE) analysis for its stringent standards. Despite revising the projected savings, the DOE is still standing by its proposed standards for potential implementation in the future.

The Internet Responded

News of Koob’s suggestions was shared across social media and everyone had an opinion to voice. “Why is it that Republicans tend to make up some pretty stupid stuff? ‘They are coming for your dishwashers. They are coming for your stoves. They are coming for your BBQ grills. Now our beer.’ Stop already,” one person wrote.

A Concerning Recommendation

Some comments found the proposed recommendation highly concerning. One person said: “I don’t even drink and no government should be telling their citizens what to drink. Biden and his cabal are trying to exercise tyranny in this country like Canada is. There is going to be an uprising in this country.”

Recommendations Aren’t Rules

Some commenters pointed out that a recommendation is just that. “No one is trying to impose any limits, just recommendations. You know, like ‘not too much sugar.’ Get a grip, people. You can still drink yourselves to death,” one person wrote. “Everyone mad about this doesn’t know the difference between a recommendation and a rule,” another echoed.

Health Recommendations and Fascism

Others claimed health recommendations lead to fascism. “The left is promoting fascism as always. Do away with the Democrats before they turn us into a fascist state,” one person wrote. “You know that fascism is a right-wing ideology, right?” another hit back.

Republicans and Democrats Argued

The news led to a plethora of heated debates. “This is a slippery slope. Recommendation today, prohibition tomorrow. Biden will ban our beer next. Just you wait,” one individual said. “I can’t tell if you’re completely misunderstanding on purpose because you don’t like Biden or if you’re just an idiot,” another responded.

Nobody Is Coming for Your Beer

Common sense prevailed among most. One person wrote: “Nobody is coming for your beer! The paranoia and conspiracies the far right creates are astounding. Having more than two beers is not a problem unless someone overdoes it. Suggesting how much alcohol is good for some people health-wise is not [taking away] your beer. Unlike the GOP, Democrats think adults can make their own decisions about their healthcare and well-being.”
