“It Helps To Know Where The Bathrooms Are”: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Mocks Byron Donalds Over Speaker Bid, Sparking Internet Backlash

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez derided Byron Donalds in response to his Speaker of the House bid. When asked by MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan for her thoughts on the 44-year-old Florida Congressman’s recent candidacy, the New York Democrat Representative insinuated that Donalds lacked the necessary experience for the role. In her own words, ‘He’s only served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives.’

AOC reiterated her opinions in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) “Donalds has only served 1 full term in the House. His most recent work involved submitting falsified evidence in an impeachment investigation. These people are not serious.”

Ocasio-Cortez alluded to a recent incident when Donalds attempted to submit what she deemed ‘falsified evidence to an impeachment hearing’ during his tenure in the Oversight Committee.

Fabricating Information

Ocasio-Cortez, often known as AOC, was referencing an impeachment hearing from the prior month, in which she accused Donalds of fabricating information by presenting text messages suggesting Hunter Biden’s involvement in fraud and money laundering to benefit his father, President Joe Biden.

She further commented on his candidacy, stating, ‘I think it helps to know where all the bathrooms are before you run for the U.S. House of Representatives, personally, and I think it helps to have some real experience in one of the most complex legislative bodies in the world before you try to run it.’

Shortfall in Leadership

This occurs amid a leadership vacuum in the House following the historic ousting of Republican Kevin McCarthy on October 3. Subsequently, Republicans abandoned Jim Jordan as their House speaker nominee after failing to secure enough votes on three occasions. Steve Scalise, the favored candidate, withdrew from the race on October 12.

The First African-American Speaker

Byron Donalds, who has endorsed Donald Trump in the 2024 Presidential election, declared his candidacy for the position on X (formerly Twitter) last Friday, saying, ‘I look forward to securing the votes of a majority of my Republican colleagues to become the first African-American Speaker, the first Speaker from the great state of Florida, and the next Speaker of the 118th Congress.’

A Conservative Vision

Donalds’ office confirmed his candidacy on Friday evening and shared a statement from the politician, stating, ‘Tonight, I am announcing my candidacy for Speaker of the US House of Representatives. My sole focus will be securing our border, funding our government responsibly, advancing a conservative vision for the House of Representatives and the American people, and expanding our Republican majority.’

He further emphasized unity and collaboration within the conference and asserted his commitment to putting the American people first. In his own words, ‘Titles aren’t given. They’re earned.’

In an interview with Newsmax following his announcement, Donald expressed his priorities, which include securing the border, responsible government funding, and promoting the conservative vision he believes voters desire. He stated, ‘I believe I am the leader who can get that job done, which is why I threw my hat into the ring to run for Speaker of the House.’

In the interim, Speaker Patrick McHenry currently leads the House, which has now gone 19 days without a speaker, causing legislative paralysis and an impending government shutdown less than a month away.

Support For AOC

Many on X were in agreement with AOC, one user enthusiastically commented “You tell them AOC!”, and another similarly derided “Donalds is running for the Speaker of the Outhouse. Let him be.”

AOC Feels The Heat

However, the attempt by the congresswoman to scrutinize Donalds’ capabilities quickly had a boomerang effect when users started to question her instead. “You believe in the Green New Deal, which is a fantasy and not even possible,” one individual responded, whereas another vehemently critiqued Ocasio-Cortez as “the definition of not serious.”

Many were quick to point to Ocasio-Cortez’s humble beginnings as a bartender in New York before her meteoric rise to political stardom as proof of hypocrisy. “You realize you were a bartender before becoming a congresswoman?” lawyer Viva Frei commented. Another user pointed out – “You fake cried for a photo in a parking lot. You might want to sit out any serious talk” referencing a debunked scandal in which AOC was accused of faking tears during a photoshoot to protest Trump-era border laws.
