“He’s Kind of Stiff and Lacks Charisma” Mike Pence’s Lackluster Presidential Campaign Falls Flat, Leaving Trump in the Lead

The recent announcement of Mike Pence’s early exit from the Republican presidential race has highlighted the enduring impact of former President Donald Trump on the GOP. Pence, boasting a remarkable political background as a congressman, governor, and former vice president, found himself ensnared in the enduring influence of Trump within the party.

The Pence Predicament

Despite a resume that would traditionally position a candidate favorably for the presidential nomination, Pence’s premature withdrawal reflects the Republican Party’s overwhelming subjugation to Trump and his continued propagation of falsehoods surrounding the 2020 election.

Pence’s decision, made over two months before the primary contests, was unveiled during a summit sponsored by the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas. Yet, in many ways, the demise of his campaign had its roots in the events leading up to January 6, 2021. This pivotal moment, marked by the Capitol insurrection, cast Pence into an unforeseen role.

A Pivotal Moment

Trump, driven by a fervent desire to cling to power, mistakenly believed Pence, as president of the Senate, could alter the election results—a power he did not possess. This false expectation marked a turning point, leading to Pence being vilified by some as a traitor, targeted by rioters who stormed the Capitol, and infamously threatened with chants of “Hang Mike Pence.”

A Turning Point: January 6 and Its Aftermath

The aftermath of January 6 lingered, haunting Pence’s campaign journey. His attempt to navigate the political landscape involved an intricate dance, attempting to honor the accomplishments of what he termed the “Trump-Pence administration” while also critiquing his former ally.

Navigating Loyalty and Principles

Pence openly criticized Trump’s departure from conservative principles, particularly on issues such as abortion, and accused the former president of placing himself above the Constitution in a bid to retain power.

A Stand for Constitutional Values

In a bold move during his campaign launch, Pence directly confronted the events of January 6, firmly stating that those who place themselves above the Constitution or request others to do so should not hold the presidential office.

The Wi-Fi password at the campaign event, “KeptHisOath!” and the initial advertisement by a supportive political action committee, utilizing footage from the insurrection, underscored Pence’s stance on upholding constitutional values.

A Strategic Approach

Although not a regular part of his speeches, Pence’s strategy was rooted in the belief that addressing the Capitol attack head-on and elucidating his position would garner respect for his dedication to the Constitution, ultimately transforming it into a point of strength.

A Failed Sway on Conservative Voters

Despite this strategic approach, it failed to sway conservative primary voters, as revealed in polls and focus groups. An August poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research demonstrated that 57% of Republicans still held beliefs that Biden’s presidency was illegitimate, while a plurality believed Trump had not acted wrongly in the lead-up to January 6.

Preserving Integrity and Legacy

Even at the outset of Pence’s campaign, though many attendees expressed admiration and respect, they remained undecided. Veteran pollster Frank Luntz noted that the GOP in 2023 differed significantly from the party that nominated Pence in 2016. The same individuals who had once applauded him in 2016 had turned their backs on him.

Mounting Challenges

Devin O’Malley, Pence’s longtime spokesman, reiterated their awareness that a significant portion of the electorate would not stand by Pence post-January 6. However, they believed that deviating from his convictions would tarnish his legacy. Despite the mounting challenges, Pence stayed true to himself, preserving his integrity and legacy.

Diverging Ideals: Traditionalism vs. Populism

Throughout his campaign, Pence ardently advocated for traditional conservative policies, such as increased U.S. support for Ukraine. Nevertheless, these stances appeared increasingly at odds with a Republican Party gradually aligning itself with Trump’s populist and isolationist ideals.

Trump’s Ongoing Influence and a Faltering Campaign

Meanwhile, Trump’s influence continued to burgeon, despite facing numerous legal challenges linked to his efforts to overturn the election. Pence’s team and confidants, speaking anonymously about the campaign’s final stages, acknowledged their realization that the race was effectively over by the time of the second debate in September. Following a lack of significant progress post the first debate, where Pence engaged in a notably forceful exchange with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, the absence of any substantial increase in polls or fundraising signified a downward trajectory.

Financial Strain and Decision to Exit

The subsequent campaign finance report painted a dire picture: Pence had accrued over $600,000 in debt by September’s end, almost matching the funds raised, despite an aggressive fundraising schedule.

Although Pence focused his efforts on Iowa, where his super PAC canvassed nearly 600,000 doors, the financial strain to continue until the January caucuses would have meant incurring overwhelming debt, taking years to repay, considering Pence’s lack of personal wealth.

Lack Of Charisma

His calendar’s conspicuous emptiness and subsequent conversations with key supporters in the past week led to Pence’s decision to terminate his campaign. Larry Post, a retired money manager, attributed Pences to his lack of personal appeal, saying  “He’s kind of stiff…So I don’t think he had a lot of charisma.” So I don’t think he had a lot of charisma.” and the fallout from January 6 played a significant role in his struggle as a candidate.

Impact of Departure and the GOP Landscape

Pence’s exit from the race is unlikely to dramatically elevate any of his opponents, indicating a narrowing candidate pool, long anticipated by anti-Trump Republicans. One attendee announced that he was “not shocked but surprised” at Pence’s withdrawel from the race

As the Republican Party continues to grapple with the legacy of January 6 and the enduring shadow of Trump, the future landscape of the GOP remains fluid, with the field gradually narrowing in the pursuit of a post-Trump era.
