‘Voters Would Have To Choose Between an Old Felon and an Old Fool’: Longtime Trump Ally of 50 Years Switches Allegiance, Endorses Rival GOP Candidate

Longtime Trump supporter Andrew Stein is leaving the former president in favor of another Republican contender, claiming that “today’s polling may prove irrelevant” despite Trump having the necessary support to win the GOP nominee in 2024.

Stein, the Democrat who supported Trump outside of party lines in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, is supporting Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, as the nominee of the Republican Party for president. “America needs an alternative, and only Ms. Haley has shown any momentum over the past several months,” Stein stated in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that was released on Friday.

Stein has known Trump since 1973 and has been acquainted with him for fifty years. Son of the late, great publishing magnate Jerry Finkelstein, Stein was elected to the New York State Assembly eight times in the 1970s before winning the 1977 election to become Manhattan’s borough president, a post he held for two decades. Then, under former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, he was chosen to serve as president of the city council. Stein held each of those posts as a Democrat.

Stein expressed on Friday that he did not take his endorsement “lightly,” complimenting the Republican president’s first term’s management of foreign affairs, the U.S.-Mexico border, and the economy. “But a Trump reelection would be difficult, and half the country will never accept him as president,” he stated. “It would keep us divided while we face international situations that require this country to be unified.”

Trump’s Mounting Legal Challenges Makes Poll Feats “Irrelevant”

While polls still show Trump as the Republican front-runner who has the potential to defeat President Joe Biden in the primaries, Stein noted that the former president’s growing legal troubles may render such results “irrelevant.”

An Unending List of Indictments

Numerous criminal and civil cases are being filed against Trump. He has racked up 91 felony charges after being accused four times this year. These include counts in Manhattan concerning the hush money payment made to Stormy Daniels and racketeering accusations in Georgia about attempts to void the results of the state’s 2020 presidential election.

The Department of Justice has also filed two indictments against him, one related to the secret papers found at Mar-a-Lago and the other regarding election involvement. In the corporate fraud lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, Trump is also on trial at this time.

“If Mr. Trump is found guilty of some of the charges against him, voters would have to choose between an old felon and an old fool,” added Stein. By highlighting Haley’s economic performance while serving as governor, her stance on racial relations in the country, and her capacity to overcome GOP shortcomings like abortion, Stein instead urged the Republican Party to support Haley.

Along with highlighting her prior experience as ambassador to the UN, he pointed out that other contenders for the presidency, such as Senator Tim Scott, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, “have not such credentials.”

Haley Described as ‘A Credible Nominee Who Can Take on Any Democrat’

“Ms. Haley is likely to have a broader appeal than Mr. Trump for independents and suburbanites, especially women,” Stein stated. “The Democrats hope he wins the nomination and is convicted of felonies, leading him to lose the presidential election. Republicans need to consolidate around Ms. Haley so they have a credible nominee who can take on any Democrat.”

Haley Makes Strides From Fourth Place to Third

Haley has improved her position in primary polls recently, moving up from fourth to third, respectively, behind Trump and DeSantis. A FiveThirtyEight tracker indicates that Haley is receiving 8 percent of Republican votes compared to DeSantis’ 14 percent, even though Trump is still the front-runner with roughly 57 percent of them. Haley’s percentage in February was just 4%, while DeSantis’s was 32%. Stein has always been an admirer of Haley. He urged Trump to replace Mike Pence as his running partner with Haley in an opinion piece he penned in 2019.

‘Haley One of the Few Candidates With Real Foreign-Policy Experience’

As governor, Haley “cut South Carolina’s taxes,” “pointed out that national bans on abortion are counterproductive and unlikely to pass,” and “has been a strong supporter of Israel.” Additionally, she is “one of the few candidates with real experience in foreign policy.”

‘Enough of the False Rumors’

Haley posted on Twitter at the time, “Enough of the false rumors,” in response to those urging Trump to pay attention to his old buddy. “Vice President Pence has been a dear friend of mine for years. He has been a loyal and trustworthy VP to the President. He has my complete support.”

“I think the country’s in trouble,” Stein said in 2016, praising Trump. Our economy is expanding too slowly. Obama’s cuts are destroying our military,” Stein said to broadcaster John Catsimatidis. Stein said, “I think he’ll be a strong leader,” in the same interview. He realizes that America needs to regain its greatness. Like JFK and Reagan, he will reduce taxes while boosting the economy.
