“Who Believes Anything This Guy Says?” – Trump’s Battle in Court Heats Up as Cohen Faces Former Boss

Michael Cohen, once the trusted lawyer for Donald Trump, stood opposite him in a New York courtroom. He was there to testify against the former President. Naturally, their encounter was marked by tension, given that these once close allies experienced a highly-publicized falling out recently.

The Reason for Their Court Meeting

Cohen was called to testify in a high-profile trial in a courtroom buzzing with anticipation. At the heart of the case is an investigation into whether Trump exaggerated the value of his assets. If these allegations are proven true, then this means Trump used these exaggerations to secure favorable business deals and potentially reduce his tax liabilities.

What Cohen Claimed

With the courtroom hanging onto every word, Cohen confirmed that Trump had requested for him “to increase the total assets based upon a number that he arbitrarily elected.” However, this wasn’t a solo task. Allen Weisselberg, another key figure from the Trump Organization, was implicated in helping “to reverse engineer the very different asset classes, increase those assets to achieve the numbers.”

Trump’s Reaction to Cohen

As journalists eagerly approached for a statement, Trump was quick to share his thoughts during the court recess. He claimed to be “not worried” about Cohen’s statements. He then cast doubts by highlighting Cohen’s history, particularly since Cohen has been known to lie under oath in the past. In Trump’s view, this discredits him as a reliable witness.

Their Past Relationship

Their shared history is complicated, to say the least. Trump and Cohen’s strong alliance began to crumble in 2018. This fracturing relationship can be traced back to federal investigations scrutinizing Cohen’s financial activities. This, alongside inquiries into whether Trump’s 2016 campaign had any illicit ties to Russia, sowed the seeds of conflict in their relationship.

Cohen’s Past Troubles

In 2018, Cohen confessed to making significant errors. He pleaded guilty to several federal charges. These included giving money secretly to two women to ensure they remained silent about their personal interactions with Trump. This was a pivotal moment in his relationship with the former President and signified that they no longer saw eye-to-eye.

Cohen’s Previous Testimony

Back in 2019, Cohen publicly addressed a major committee. It was there he made the bold claim stating, “Mr. Trump is a cheat.” He elaborated, sharing his belief that Trump often “ inflated his total assets when it served his purposes, ”especially during times like when he wanted to appear on the Forbes list of wealthy individuals.

Trump’s Defense

Throughout these allegations, Trump remains firm in his defense. He consistently refutes any wrongdoing on his part. Furthermore, he challenges the credibility of Cohen’s statements, pointing out that Cohen has lied under oath before, thereby implying he might not be a reliable source of truth.

Inside the Courtroom Drama

The courtroom atmosphere was thick with tension, especially when it came to discussing Cohen’s track record. Colleen Faherty from the New York attorney general’s office aimed to address Cohen’s history swiftly. In contrast, Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, intensely focused on Cohen’s past, especially highlighting instances where Cohen lied under oath.

Cohen’s Statement to Reporters

Just before stepping into the trial, Cohen took a moment to address the media. He emphasized that the trial wasn’t “about Donald Trump vs. Michael Cohen or Michael Cohen vs. Donald Trump.” Instead, it revolved around “accountability, plain and simple.” Cohen expressed his confidence in Judge Engoron, trusting him to make fair judgments in the case.

Judge Engoron’s Early Decision

Before the trial’s official start, Judge Arthur Engoron declared that Trump, alongside his close associates and sons, had indeed manipulated the worth of their assets. Now, the court aims to uncover if Trump intentionally conspired to commit this act. As Engoron previously stated, the crux of the trial rests on understanding the motive behind such actions.

The trial continues its rigorous pace, with Cohen slated to return for more probing. The week promises high-profile testimonies, with the spotlight on several individuals. Not only will Trump voice his side, but his family, including his prominent daughter Ivanka and sons Donald Jr. and Eric, will also take the stand. As Cohen mentioned earlier, this case is about “accountability,” and the forthcoming testimonies will be pivotal in deciding the outcome.

Confident or Overwhelmed?

In response to the news, some people shared their thoughts on Cohen’s appearance in court. One user commented, “For all the bravado, Cohen looked like a deer in the headlights. I hope his legal training kicks in and he does well.” However, others quickly pointed out that it was likely Cohen was nervous due to the intense media spectacle around this case.

While many focus on the trial’s specifics, some Trump supporters brought up Cohen’s history, “He was also convicted for crimes not related to Trump,” a critic pointed out. “Do your own Google, but if memory serves, they were white-collar financial crimes, some relating to NYC taxi medallions.”

Credibility Concerns

Additionally, other users shared these doubts surrounding Cohen’s claims. One user commented, “Who believes anything this guy says?” Other users agreed with this, arguing that Cohen’s past misdeeds cast doubt on his trustworthiness as a witness. Some argued that Cohen may be lying to cause issues for his former colleague.

Cohen’s Changed Persona?

However, some users commented on Cohen’s apparent character transformation. “Good for him. If you’ve listened to his Mea Culpa podcast, you know he’s not the same shady lawyer that worked for Trump. After everything that’s happened to him, including being the poster boy for the weaponization of government, I expect this will be VERY interesting,” commented one user.

Questioning The Banks

Some users were more concerned about the bank’s role in this saga. One user said, “Here’s what I don’t understand about this fraud case. If my house is valued at $500k and I have a $300k mortgage, I can get a home equity loan for up to $200k. But if I go to the bank and say my house is worth $2 million, give me a $1 million home equity loan, they’d #1 have an appraisal and #2 laugh in my face. Didn’t the banks do any type of appraisals on Trump’s loans? Or are they also in on the scam?”

Past Tensions

Cohen’s strained relationship with Trump isn’t new. One individual said, “Cohen has been on a roll dissing his past boss the last few years. There was a story decades ago when Cohen was doing all the dirty work for Trump. Cohen had to beg Trump to attend his daughter Trilah aka baptism. The moron wanted to play golf instead.”

Political Implications

The political divide in reactions is evident. One user said, “It’s absolutely crazy to me all this criminal stuff coming out about Donald Trump, and he’s still popular among Republicans. And he still has a chance to be president. Absolutely wild. If Biden had done a fraction of what Trump has done, Biden would have been destroyed by the media and the population. It is both frustrating and interesting to see that there’s almost no negative political consequence for Republicans when they do bad stuff.”
