Former White House chief of staff John Kelly is criticizing his former employer for statements he claims the then-president made about military members and veterans frequently, as well as for what he termed Trump’s dishonesty on his stances on various groups and on abortion.

“A Person That Thinks Those Who Defend Their Country Are All ‘Suckers’”

In a statement to CNN that was released on Monday, Kelly slammed former president Donald Trump while verifying information that was reported in a 2020 article in The Atlantic. “A person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all ‘suckers’ because ‘there is nothing in it for them,'” Kelly said about the former president.

“A person that did not want to be seen in the presence of military amputees because ‘it doesn’t look good for me.’ A person who demonstrated open contempt for a Gold Star family — for all Gold Star families — on TV during the 2016 campaign, and rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defense are ‘losers’ and wouldn’t visit their graves in France,” Kelly further remarked.

Trump Privately Made Derogatory Remarks Against Late Sen. John McCain and Former Prez George H.W. Bush

According to The Atlantic, Trump has made derogatory remarks in private about American service members and veterans, including late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a Vietnam War prisoner of war, and former President George H.W. Bush, who was shot down during World War II. Trump reportedly referred to dead troops at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery as “losers” and Marines who died at Belleau Wood as “suckers” during a trip to France in 2018 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. He was also reported as having made a similar statement while visiting the cemetery of Kelly’s own son, who died in Afghanistan.

“Trump Has No Idea What America Stands For”

Additionally, Kelly criticized Trump for not being “truthful regarding his position on the protection of unborn life, on women, on minorities, on evangelical Christians, on Jews, on working men and women. A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about.”

Trump Further Blasted as Person Who Admires Murderers

Kelly continued, “A person who cavalierly suggests that a selfless warrior who has served his country for 40 years in peacetime and war should lose his life for treason — in expectation that someone will take action,” an apparent allusion to recent comments made by Trump about Army Gen. Mark Milley, who recently retired as the chairman of the Joints Chief of Staff. “A person who admires autocrats and murderous dictators. A person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution, and the rule of law.”

“There is nothing more that can be said,” Kelly stated. “God help us.” In response to NBC News’ request for comment, Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, stated: “John Kelly has totally clowned himself with these debunked stories he’s made up because he didn’t serve his President well while working as Chief of Staff.”

In 2018, retired four-star Marine General Kelly resigned from his position as Trump’s chief of staff. Conflicts have dogged his administration; at the time, sources described arguments between Kelly, Trump, and West Wing personnel. When Kelly stood up for then-Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, who had voiced his concerns about Trump’s call with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in July 2019, Kelly found himself in the sights of his former boss in 2020.

Trump instructed Zelenskyy to look into Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and Democrats during the call. The Senate subsequently cleared Trump of two accusations, including abusing his power and obstructing Congress, but the phone call was the catalyst for the House to impeach him for the first time. During Kelly’s tenure in the Trump administration, rumors spread that he was worn out and dissatisfied by his job as well as by Trump’s unpredictable nature.

Trump’s Further Inhumane Remarks on the Country’s Wounded

Kelly’s remarks refer to another recent report from The Atlantic, according to which Trump disapproved of Army Captain Luis Avila during a welcoming reception despite the fact that he was gravely injured. Trump allegedly remarked, “Why do you bring people like that here? No one wants to see that, the wounded,” in reaction to Avila’s rendition of “God Bless America.”

The unusual number of former Trump loyalists who have publicly denounced the former president is highlighted by Kelly’s comments. Even prominent experts like Mark Esper and Bill Barr have questioned Trump’s suitability for administration due to his conceited nature and disrespect for the needs of the nation.

Kelly also mentioned that in 2016, when his parents challenged him for his anti-Muslim remarks, Trump publicly demeaned the parents of Humayun Khan, an Army captain and Gold Star recipient who was killed in Iraq in 2004.

Trump Refuses to Go to the Cemetery Since It’s “Filled With Losers!”

A portion of The Atlantic’s account was previously corroborated by Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin, including his unwillingness to visit the Aisne-Marne Cemetery in France. The statement that burial visits are for “losers” and discourages others from going there is a confirmation of the 2020 Atlantic article, in which Trump is quoted as saying, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.”

Kelly Condemns Trump for Labelling Milley ‘Treasonous’

Kelly also criticized Trump for claiming last month that departing Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley committed treason and implying that the penalty for such a crime used to be the death penalty. Trump also stated that Milley’s acts were “so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH!” It looks like Kelly is accusing Trump of seeking to encourage violence against Milley, who is now retired, in his statement that Trump said this “in expectation that someone will take action”.

“A Total Lie”: White House Denies and Claps Back

At the time, the White House vehemently disputed this. The president said, “To think that I would make statements negative to our military and fallen heroes when nobody has done what I’ve done” for the military was “a total lie. … It’s a disgrace.” Yet, Kelly who was there for these important incidents has now successfully said that it not only occurred, but also repeatedly.
