“If You’re Not Gonna Expel Insurrectionists, Then Sit Down!” – Public Anger After Tim Scott Suggests Anti-Israel Congress Members Should Be Expelled

In a recent interview with Fox, presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott suggested that any Congress members supporting extremist groups like Hamas should be expelled. In particular, he referred to “the Squad” as being such individuals. He argued that these people should no longer be allowed to serve in government.

Popularly known as “The Squad”, the group includes Congress members Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, and Rep. Ilhan Omar. Sen. Scott, specifically targeting them, said in a statement to FOX News Digital, “They are giving aid and comfort to antisemitism and politicizing our relationship with our ally Israel.”

Sen. Tim Scott showed his feelings about the responsibilities of Congress members. He stated, “Any member of Congress who gives [Hamas] aid, comfort, or justification is in violation of their constitutional oath and must be removed.” He connected any expression of certain views with a breach of duty.

Explosive Accusations

Scott continues, “It’s a dangerous, reckless signal for members of Congress to send. The rest of us should send a clear message that we stand WITH Israel and AGAINST those who are sowing strife with our allies.” These comments came after members of the Squad voted against pro-Israel measures in Congress and also expressed concern over the current Israel-Gaza war.

Statements in Congress

During a session in Congress, Rep. Rashida Tlaib accused Israel of intentionally bombing the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital. However, a report from U.S. intelligence, which was later shared by Sen. Scott in a press conference, found that it was unlikely that Israel bombed the hospital. Instead, US intelligence indicated that it was probably a misfired Palestinian missile.

Charges of Racism

During a House Committee meeting, the Israel-Palestine debate took another turn when Rep. Pramila Jayapal described Israel as “a racist state.” This sparked many reactions. Some argued that her statements were wrong, deeply hurtful, and divisive. Others claimed Jayapal was talking about Israel’s alleged genocidal acts, not Israel as a nation.”

World Hypnosis

In a tweet from 2012, Rep. Ilhan Omar mentioned that Jews had “hypnotized the world.” The tweet resurfaced during the ongoing debate. In 2019, she apologized for her tweet, saying, “My intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole. We have to always be willing to step back and think through criticism, just as I expect people to hear me when others attack me for my identity. This is why I unequivocally apologize.”

Picking Sides

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made headlines when she made remarks about those supporting Israel. She said anyone who supported Israel was “taking the side of occupation.” This statement stirred debates on social media, with users questioning the nature of her claims. Some argued that her comments were right, while others labeled her anti-Semitic.

The Constitutional Framework

While the U.S. Constitution grants Congress the authority to expel members, it doesn’t make it easy. A two-thirds vote is required to expel a member to ensure checks and balances. This high threshold ensures that such decisions aren’t made lightly or without significant consensus. As one reaction stated, “No one should be expelled while George Santos is still a member.”

History Speaks

Throughout the extensive history of U.S. politics, the actual use of the expulsion power has been rare. Clearly, Congress has been careful with this, even in challenging times. During the Civil War, just three of the then five members of the House had been expelled for expressing loyalty to the confederacy.

Support For the Group

One user who supported the Group claimed, “I don’t recall any member of the “squad” attacking the republic, try to obstruct an election or denying the result of a legitimate fair election. But I did see many Republicans doing these things.” They argued that the Squad technically hasn’t broken any laws and shouldn’t be punished, although the Republicans involved in the January 6th terrorist attack should be.

The Public Fires Back

Similarly, some users discussed Republican members who they believe tried to prevent Biden’s election. They suggested that these Republicans have also violated their oaths and should be considered for expulsion. One user commented, “If you’re not gonna expel insurrectionists, then sit down.”

Free Speech in Action

Responding to the various calls, some argued that these Congress members were entitled to free speech. They argue that we should counter hate speech with well-informed views rather than attempting to silence certain voices. One user claimed, “However, the solution to bad speech is better speech.”

Who Gets Expelled?

Reacting to this news, one user said, “So anyone who ‘provides aid and comfort’ to our enemies (by merely expressing their opinions) should be barred from Congress? Ok great. Let’s do Russia and North Korea next. That will eliminate Trump and his crackpot goons in Congress from being able to hold office.”

Election Challenge and the GOP

The aftermath of the recent election brought about numerous challenges and allegations. Rep. Bill Pascrell targeted 120 House Republicans who backed an election challenge coming from Texas. He specifically named House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. This suggested that he endorsed a leader for the challenge.

Supporting Election Challenges

However, defenders of the GOP argue that supporting an election challenge is within their rights and is not a valid ground for expulsion. One of the reactions pointed out, “Yes, but the GOP have been crying about the squad since before they took office and have been trying to have them expelled since day one.”

The Slippery Slope

Many people are skeptical of expelling members based on their political or personal views. Critics argue that once started, it may be hard to stop. One reaction said, “As long as Santos continues to hold his seat. Any conversation to expel a House member has no business happening. (Unless, of course, you care to talk about actual insurrectionist helpers.)”

Wider Issues

Some users took this discussion of expulsion as a way to discuss other political issues they faced. One user said, “Hate to get all “sidey” but they should expel Gym Jordan for not doing any work and being a liar.” Rep. Jim Jordan was given the nickname ‘Gym’ Jordan by his opponents due to his previous experience as a wrestling coach for Ohio State University.

Secret Strategy?

Other users indicated that this was a distraction method by the Republicans. One user claimed, “It’s exactly going with their strategy of going after Biden and his son while ignoring Jared and Ivampa raking in over 2.640B$ and FF gouging US taxpayers for his businesses, etc. It’s their FMO .. but the hypocrisy is on the level of a child’s cartoon it’s so obvious.” Another responded, “This is all just deflection to distract from their abject failures in the House.”

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
