Former ESPN anchor Sage Steele expressed her feelings about interviewing President Joe Biden, stating it was “sad” due to his difficulty in maintaining coherence. She observed that Biden often couldn’t complete his sentences and would trail off during conversations which led her to find the humane aspect of his situation heartbreaking.
“I Don’t Care, I Didn’t Vote for Him”
The oldest president in US history “struggled,” according to Steele, who “trailed off” on subjects even then, more than two years ago. Steele said on Bill Maher’s “Club Ransom” podcast on Sunday, “I don’t care, I didn’t vote for him,” adding that she believes Biden is “a terrible president.” However, she remarked of his apparent confusion, “That made me sad. The now-80-year-old president is under increasing criticism over his age and a string of gaffes as he campaigns to remain in office. “The human aspect of what we’re witnessing right now, to me, is heartbreaking,” she added.
Challenges in the Interviews?
The former ESPN presenter revealed to the comic that she had a pre-recorded interview with Biden in March 2021 before that year’s MLB Opening Day. She said, adding that she had to keep the chief executive waiting as they awaited the resolution of technological problems, “It was [via] satellite, it wasn’t in person.” “I had to kind of BS, so. While I waited for us to move, I had to converse.
Biden confused: ‘Wait — What’s Her Name?’
As the president’s personnel held a lens cover over the camera “until the last second, you can hear and we’re chit-chatting,” Steele said she could not see the president. Consequently, I can hear him asking, “What is this for? What’s her name, you ask? Maher began to giggle as Steele related what happened. “I was exclaiming, ‘Oh my God!’ Then [an assistant] announced, “SportsCenter, ESPN.” He then says, “Oh, OK.”
Biden Recounts Football Stories
The president then began to talk to her about his own football career. Biden excelled as a halfback and wide receiver in high school. When he was a freshman at the University of Delaware, he also briefly played football. Steele recalled the incident, saying that she was still unable to see the man. “And so he started to tell football stories of his greatness.” “He declares, ‘I have the greatest hands.’ What are your thoughts about that? Steele enquired.
‘His Voice Just Trailed Off’
“And here’s the saddest thing his voice just trailed off. He said, ‘I was good,’ and then he went silent, and he goes …, ‘Uh, never mind.’ “I thought it was so sad because I realized that’s why he was in the basement during the whole election cycle because even then he couldn’t finish his sentences, he struggled.” “So forget about politics. I don’t care, I didn’t vote for him,” she remarked. “However, that made me sad.”
‘What We’re Witnessing Right Now Is Heartbreaking!’
“However, forget that — the human aspect of what we’re witnessing right now with him, to me, is heartbreaking. And it’s inexcusable by the family when you knew during the election.” A few days before Steele’s podcast interview, Maher advised Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential run.

Even though the two men are only four years apart in age, the host of “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday night made fun of President Biden by saying that he is the “only Democrat capable of losing to Trump.”

In a reference to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Maher said, “Someone has to convince President Biden that if he runs again, he’s going to turn the country back over to Trump and… go… down in history as Ruth Bader Biden, the person who doesn’t know when to quit and so does great damage to their party and their country.” “What matters is voters think Biden’s too old,” he continued. “What matters is he’s going to lose to Trump.”

In October 2021, Steele was removed from a number of high-profile assignments and taken off the air for ten days, including coverage of the New York City Marathon, the Rose Parade, and the yearly ESPNW Summit. The well-known sports announcer had been employed by ESPN since 2007.
