Donald Trump is no stranger to controversy and, yet again, the former president has faced backlash. This time, it’s in regard to a questionable speech at a non-union factory in Michigan. His speech took place amid the United Auto Workers strike.
A Publicity Stunt
At a Drake Enterprises building, the criminal defendant spoke to a crowd of around 500 supporters. Before long, though, critics found out that the facility only had around 150 employees and, of those workers, none were represented by the UAW.
Lots of Lies
According to The Detroit News, a woman in the crowd held a sign that read “union members for Trump”’ despite not actually being a union member. Moreover, another individual held a sign that said “auto workers for Trump” despite not even being an auto worker.
A Billionaire Charlatan
Trump’s speech was labeled a “stunt” by a UAW negotiator, who claimed it was intended to “pull the wool over the eyes of the working class.” The former president was also criticized by Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz, who called the potential felon a “billionaire charlatan.”
Kevin Munoz’s Words
In an email, Munoz wrote: “Donald Trump’s low-energy, incoherent ‘speech’ at a non-union factory in Michigan was a pathetic, recycled attempt to feign support for working Americans. Americans have seen him try this before and they aren’t buying it. They know who Donald Trump really is: a billionaire charlatan running on empty words, broken promises, and lost jobs.”
Americans Won’t Forget
Munoz continued: “He left office with fewer jobs than when he entered. He created incentives for companies to ship manufacturing overseas. And, he let China get ahead in the race to the future. We all remember. Americans won’t forget come November 2024.”
The Environmental Lunatics
During his publicity stunt speech, Trump also called individuals with environmental concerns “lunatics.” He said: “You can be loyal to American labor or you can be loyal to the environmental lunatics. You can’t really be loyal to both. It’s one or the other.”
The Internet’s Response
News of the publicity stunt was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people were critical. “Nobody should be surprised at the lengths Trump will stoop to,” one individual wrote. Another said: “Indeed, pathetic ‘stunt’ just about sums up Trump.”
A Truly Pathetic Individual
The aforementioned commenter wasn’t the only one to use the word “pathetic.” Another person said: “He’s a truly pathetic individual. If he gets away with all this, or becomes president again, the world will have gone nuts enough to not even bother with propriety.”
Silence, Complicity, and Fascism
Others urged people, if it comes to it, to vote against the former president. They pointed out his fascist tendencies and criticized his speeches. One such individual said: “Everything he says is pure garbage. Too much silence and complicity. Vote against the fascist.”
Republicans and Unions
Another commenter wrote: “No Republicans support unions. Republicans pass anti-union laws all the time. If worker rights, working conditions, [and] a living wage is something you support, vote for it. Vote out as many right-wingers and Republicans as you can in all local and state elections.”
I Support Everyone
One person speculated about Trump’s intentions. They said: “Yeah, he’s sliding back into the ‘I support everyone’ play because he’s desperate for the presidency. Except now we have four years to reference how he [destroyed] most of America.”
Trump Feigning Support
Another commenter said: “Trump feigning support for striking auto workers – or for working-class Americans generally, or of fair labor practices for that matter – is as preposterous as Trump’s insistence that he’s ‘the least racist person there is anywhere in the world.’”
Trump Only Cares About the Ultra-Rich
Others looked to Trump’s history in business. One such individual wrote: “He has also personally screwed over workers on every job he’s done as a private businessman. It should be clear by now that Trump only cares about his own.”
Unions in the South
One person lamented the lack of union support in their area. They wrote: “I wish unions had more appeal in the south. There’s been some movements like the Union of Southern Service Workers but it is baffling to me that they have a difficult time gaining traction.”
Don’t Fall For Trump’s Con
The aforementioned individual ended their comment with a plea: “Please! The only way to make this a labor revolution is for all working-class people to join the fight! And for union members across the country, don’t fall for Trump’s con.”
Conservatives vs. Liberals
Another commenter wrote: “Conservatives are against unions because the only ones who should be coming up are them. Bringing everybody up means bringing up those people they don’t like. Liberals want everyone to have a better life. Well, except billionaires.”
No One Is Surprised
Plenty of people expressed their lack of shock regarding Trump’s actions. “Is anyone surprised? His whole life is a stunt,” one person said. “Donald Trump orchestrated a publicity stunt. Why is this surprising? Is anybody surprised? I’m not, that’s for sure,” another echoed.
Trying to Avoid Jail
Another person said: “He truly is evil and is clearly getting desperate. He needs the presidency to stay out of prison. He will do anything to get it, even pretend to support people he clearly does not. Well, he’d do that anyway even if he wasn’t trying to avoid jail.”
