Former President Donald Trump is currently entangled in a web of escalating legal issues – and with these legal battles come soaring legal costs. To cover a substantial portion of these expenses, funds have been drawn from his political action committee (PAC), Save America, and shuffled from Trump-supporting Super PACs.
Save America’s Financial Struggles
Save America has found itself in a troubling financial situation, with less than $4 million in cash. According to The New York Times, a staggering sum of over $101 million has been diverted to cover legal fees for Trump and his associates since the beginning of 2022.
Mid-Year Tax Filings
Mid-year tax filings for PACs offer a window into presidential campaign funding and the allocation of funds. In Save America’s case, a significant chunk of funds that could have otherwise supported campaign needs or political initiatives has been overwhelmingly funneled into covering legal expenses related to Trump and his associates.
Federal Election Commission Filing
Reportedly, Save America spent approximately $25 million in the first half of 2023, with an astonishing $21.6 million dedicated to legal fees. This is according to its mid-year Federal Election Commission filing.
Make America Great Again
Make America Great Again Inc. is a pro-Trump Super PAC. In an interesting twist, it’s returned $12.25 million of the $13.1 million it raised in 2023 to Save America. This is categorized as a refund in federal campaign filings and is believed to be the largest refund ever recorded in the history of federal campaigns.
The Future of Trump’s Fundraising
Despite concerns about Save America’s financial situation, historical patterns indicate that Trump will continue to rely on his legal challenges as a source of substantial donations from his supporters – something the former president appears to have no shame in doing.
The Internet’s Response
News of Save America’s financial situation was shared across the internet and, for the most part, people were critical. One person said: “When will this country finally recognize Trump for who Trump really is? I’ve been a registered Republican for 50 years. I’ve voted for a Republican president for 50 years. Sorry for ever voting for Trump but that would never take place again.”
Not an Imaginary Savior
The commenter continued: “Trump has no integrity and no compassion for anyone or anything except for Trump! This country should get back to voting for people with integrity and compassion first, then look at the best candidate from there. That’s how we ended up with Trump [and] MAGAs – both are poison to the United States. Time for this country to see Trump for who Trump is and not an imaginary savior.”
The National Debt
Some people criticized all politicians, suggesting that they should use these types of funds to pay off the national debt. One individual wrote: “Imagine if all these politicians used campaign money to pay off U.S. debt. There would be a surplus if they did that.”
Not Enough Money
Another said: “On the one hand, I don’t like a candidate being able to collect money for his candidacy, then spend it on lawyers because of indictments and lawsuits. At the same time, the current system will force Trump to start paying his bills with his own money, since his donors aren’t sending him enough of theirs to cover his legal bills. And he won’t have money for campaigning.”
An Imaginary Fund
Others questioned why an alleged multi-billionaire needs to use such funds and donations in the first place. “Why does a multi-billionaire need donations for legal bills and political campaigns? He must not be a multi-billionaire except in his own mind,” one person said.
Using His Own Money
Plenty of people discussed the idea of Trump paying lawyers with his own money. One individual wrote: “Trump may have to pay lawyers out of his own pocket for his criminal defense and stop begging others.”
A Not-So-Gentle Response
Others weren’t as kind with their words. “Yet his pathetic followers continue to send their pennies as he lies to them and pleads for help,” one person said. “If only his followers weren’t too dumb to stop sending him their money,” another wrote.
Donors Will Leave
Some people said that donors will soon abandon the former president. One person said: “Donors are going to start getting tired of giving him money, especially big money donors who want funds to go toward winning in 2024 but see it’s actually paying lawyers to fight court battles.”
A Foolish Approach
The commenter continued: “If he just accepted his defeat and [prepared] for 2024 without any of this baggage, he’d probably have a good chance at the presidency. But instead he’s running on election fraud that has been proven false over and over. Foolish.”
A Wild Theory
Trump’s supporters proposed some interesting theories. One individual wrote: “Was that not the plan from the beginning? Charge him with a load of fake charges and he spends his campaign money defending himself. Good plan, Dems.”
Openly Admitting Guilt
Others pointed out that Trump’s lawyer expenses are probably extra large because he keeps publicly admitting his guilt. “He has to overpay for lousy lawyers because he’s guilty and he keeps openly admitting to it. What else are they spending money on? Trips to Iowa?” one person said.
An Alleged Multi-Billionaire
Another said: “Trump told his cultists he had $10 billion when he was running for office the first time. He was lying, of course. Amazing those people are still gullible enough to send him their Walmart flip-flop money.”
Begging for Pennies
Plenty of people didn’t understand how the former president still has supporters. “How does he still have supporters? I really do not understand. He’s begging people for money, people who earn pennies compared to him. How does that not turn his last few supporters away? I don’t get it,” one person wrote.
