“Women Are Responsible for Their Own Standards of Men”: Influencer Faces Backlash for Blaming Women’s Choices on Setting the Bar Low

The internet is full of relationship advice. Every now and then, though, someone shares a controversial tip that stirs debate across the internet. Laura Danger, known online as thatdarnchat, caused one such discussion after she posted a video to TikTok telling viewers how to tell the difference between “mediocre” and “good” men.

There Was More to the Video

In the video, Laura also recalled how a “pretty big” male content creator had previously said something problematic. She said: “A male influencer on this app said something problematic a month or two ago and I got hell for calling it out.”

He’d Commented on Her Video

According to the TikToker, the male content creator had claimed – in the comments of one of her videos – that women are responsible for their own standards of men. He said that if the bar is “on the floor,” that’s where they’ve “left it.” According to Laura, he said this on a video where she explained the way society grooms women into having low expectations of men.

Laura Spoke About a Second Problematic Male Influencer

The TikToker went on to discuss a second successful male influencer. She said: “This guy made a video about how you can ‘make her life a little bit easier by folding your own laundry’ and I said ‘cleaning up after yourself is not making her life easier unless it was making her life hard in the first place.’ This is why I do this.”

Laura Read Out a Another Problematic Comment

The TikToker read another comment she’d received on one of her videos: “It’s pretty good luck to find a man who will do the bare minimum.” Laura went on to explain that this was her exact point and questioned how men like this one are considered the good guys. She asked: “How is it that the standard for a good guy is this low?”

She Told Viewers What She Wants

Laura went on to further explain her point and tell viewers exactly what she wants society to change. She said: “The bar shouldn’t be this low. They should be enriching our lives. It should be a partnership. It’s not a favor for me when my husband does the family’s laundry. It’s not a favor for me when he reads the emails that come in from our kid’s school.”

She Explained Her Point Further

Laura went into detail and made her point very clear. She said: “A good man empowers. A good man steps up. He participates. When we congratulate and reward men for cleaning up messes that they made, we perpetuate unfair, unequal, oppressive gender dynamics.”

She Explained the Difference Between “Good” and “Mediocre” Men

Laura concluded the video by giving her opinion on the difference between “good” and “mediocre” men. She said: “Good men hear this feedback and they step up. Mediocre men think that cleaning up their own messes is something they should be applauded for.”

Her Commenters Agreed

Laura’s viewers largely agreed with the thoughts expressed in her video. They left supportive comments, with many telling stories about “mediocre” men who have made their lives difficult. One person wrote: “I would rather be single for the rest of my days than deal with a mediocre man making my life harder and disrupting my peace.”

Some Were Confused by the Minds of Men

Some commenters were shocked and confused by the men Laura discussed in her video. “They want us to simultaneously raise our standards and accept the bare minimum. How does that make sense?” one viewer asked. “They usually think they’re the high standard,” another replied.

Some Shared Personal Stories

Some viewers shared personal stories pertaining to men doing the bare minimum and expecting praise. One person wrote: “I realized I always thanked my husband whenever he did a task that I normally do daily. I asked myself if I’d ever been thanked for anything. Nope.”

Others Said They Prefer to Stay Single

Several women said that the issues Laura discussed are the exact reason they choose to stay single. “All of this is why I remain single. I’m looking for someone who will add to my life rather than take away. Seems impossible,” one individual commented. “Yes. Past several years, just raising my child alone. My peace is protected. Done sacrificing,” another replied. “Same. Five years and counting for me,” a third person added.

Some Told Positive Stories

Some commenters had positive stories to tell. Many left comments about men who do chores and help around the house with no expectation of praise. One person wrote: “My husband has never once considered doing our kid’s laundry a favor to me. He just sees it needs to be done. That’s a good guy.”

Others Discussed Divorce

Some viewers discussed the reasons for divorce. One individual claimed men doing the bare minimum, if anything at all, is up there as one of the most common causes. They said: “You are spot on. A divorce attorney said it’s a major reason for divorce. Women get tired of it and leave. It’s a problem.”
