The representative of Jacksonville, Angie Nixon, has said that Governor Ron DeSantis may have inspired a shooting in which a 21-year-old White man fatally shot three Black men.
The Governor Has Blood on His Hands

Speaking to MSNBC, Nixon accused DeSantis of inspiring the shooting through his policies. She said: “This is a governor who has done nothing but fan, fan these types of happenings throughout our state. Look, at the end of the day, the governor has blood on his hands.”
A Racist Attack

The shooting occurred at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville’s Newtown neighborhood and the assailant used a weapon featuring a swastika emblem. The individual had sent racist writings and a suicide note to his father, providing insight into his motives for the attack.
DeSantis Swiftly Responded to the Shooting

Ron DeSantis, Florida governor and a potential candidate for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, swiftly denounced the shooter’s actions and referred to him as a “major league scumbag.” He explicitly condemned the act of targeting individuals based on their racial background, labeling it as “totally unacceptable.”
Critical Race Theory

Although Nixon did not address exactly how DeSantis’ policies were linked to the shooting, it’s worth noting that the governor had previously been vocal about his opposition to certain left-leaning ideologies that he categorizes as “woke.” Additionally, DeSantis signed a bill into law that prohibits the teaching of critical race theory – an important perspective on history that highlights systemic racism in American institutions.
Preventing Indoctrination and Discrimination

DeSantis has consistently expressed his commitment to preventing what he views as the encroachment of “woke” ideologies into Florida’s schools and workplaces. He has emphasized that he opposes indoctrination and discrimination within the state, though his ideas of “indoctrination” and “discrimination” may well differ from the definitions minority groups hold.
A Questionable Curriculum

Discussions surrounding Florida’s Black history curriculum have also sparked controversy. Critics, including Vice President Kamala Harris and some Democrats, have taken issue with elements that suggest slavery could have led to the development of beneficial skills for Black people.
DeSantis Riles Up Bigots

News of Nixon’s words was shared across the internet and people largely agreed. One person wrote: “Ms. Nixon is absolutely right that DeSantis is to blame. He may not literally have put the gun in the shooter’s hands, but all this ‘anti-woke’ culture war talk riles up the armed and dangerous crowd and encourages them to go out and kill people.”
Subtly Inciting Violence With Words

A fair few people agreed with the aforementioned commenter and discussed the way politicians can subtly incite violence with their words and actions. “He is 100% to blame for hateful, crazy racists coming out. He is as complicit as Trump in the hate this country is now known for,” one individual said.
DeSantis Should Focus on Florida

Some commenters discussed other comments made by DeSantis. “My feed had a story about the Jacksonville shooting at the same time as a story about DeSantis saying if he was president, he would send special forces to Mexico to deal with drug cartels. Maybe he should work on the violence problem in the state he’s actually the governor of,” one person wrote.
DeSantis Already Had Blood on His Hands

Others claimed DeSantis already had blood on his hands before the shooting. “He already has blood on his hands for the thousands of unnecessary COVID-19 deaths his policies and official misinformation caused,” one individual wrote. “[Lots of] Hurricane Ian victims/deaths as well. He [would] rather campaign for president than finish his job as governor,” another added.
DeSantis’ Neo-Nazi Following

Some people discussed the governor’s popularity among neo-Nazis, a relevant factor given the swastika emblem on the weapon involved in the shooting. “DeSantis had neo-Nazis posting signs in support of him near Disney. DeSantis has blood on his hands. Why are the feds still spending more on a drug war than they are on domestic terrorism?” one person asked.
Others Were More Emotional in Their Responses

Others were far more emotional in the responses – understandably so, given the situation. “Even though I’m a Native American gay woman and I don’t live in Florida, I have nothing left to say about DeSantis that hasn’t been said except this. I watched that news conference he had in Jacksonville. That was the most putrid, disgusting, insincere display of self-interest I have ever seen,” one person wrote. “Most of the cities down here in Florida vote blue and we hate this fascist, sociopathic, racist, lying piece of [work]. But we are consistently out-voted by the collective stupidity of the surrounding counties in the rest of the state,” another responded.
