“They Said I Was a Member of the Devil’s Army”: Kinzinger Confirms Vote for Biden in 2024 if Trump Is the GOP Nominee

Former Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger claims that he would support Joe Biden in 2024 because he believes that supporting Donald Trump is a vote in favor of “authoritarianism.”

In addition, he disclosed during a discussion of his new book Renegade that he had been abandoned by a family member when he ‘lost the faith of Fox News’ and cast a vote to impeach Trump in the wake of the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

Kinzinger was one of two Republicans on the House Select Committee looking into the attack on the Capitol following the 2020 election. He did not seek reelection in 2022 to continue serving his district in Illinois. Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney, who lost her Wyoming at-large House seat in the 2022 primary, joined him.

Unsure Whether He’s Still a Republican

‘Do you still consider yourself a Republican?’ In an interview on Monday, Kinzinger was questioned by CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “It’s a tough question,” the former legislator said.

He said, “I do.” Further adding, “only in that because I don’t wanna give up on that fight. And this country needs two healthy parties, a healthy Democratic Party and a healthy Republican. So, I’m not gonna give up that title.” Following his departure from Congress in January 2023, Kinzinger became a prominent political pundit for CNN.

On Monday, he informed Cooper that following Fox News anchor Sean Hannity’s criticism of him, he got a letter from a family member disowning him. Kinzinger added, “So, I had family that sent a certified letter disowning me. They said I’ve lost the trust of great men like Sean Hannity, which is funny, but they believe that. They said I was a member of the devil’s army.”

He further remarked, “You know, we had people that would call and threaten to kill my – at the time – five-month-old child, or say they wish he would die.” Kinzinger was one of ten House Republicans who supported impeaching Trump on the grounds that he encouraged rebellion during the incident on January 6.

Kinzinger, while loyal to his Republican identity, stated that if Trump were to be the GOP nominee once more in 2024—a prospect that appears increasingly plausible as the primary race progresses—he would support Biden. “I see a sprint [toward authoritarianism] if he is re-elected,” Kinzinger remarked.

‘That Rail Can’t Take Two Hits’

“Because on January 6th, we saw the guardrails, you know, of democracy held. The car hit the rails. It kept you on the road. That rail can’t take two hits,” he explained. “And now they know what they’re doing. Now they know where the tricks are in the system.”

Kinzinger Felt “Dirty” Voting for Trump in 2020

He declared, “I really think it comes down to one issue on the ballot.” “Not taxes, not even abortion, nothing. The one issue is: Do you believe in democracy, or do you believe in authoritarianism?” In 2020, Kinzinger said to the Washington Post that he felt “dirty” about voting for Donald Trump and that “it’s not something I can square away in my soul fully.”

Before he retired from Congress earlier this year, Kinzinger was one of the most well-known opponents of the former president in the House Republican caucus. He was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his involvement in the uprising and one of the two Republicans who served on the committee on January 6.

‘Unity Is No Longer a Word We Use’

“Unity is no longer a word we use, and there’s little to no desire to bridge our differences,” Kinzinger declared in 2021 upon declaring he would not seek reelection. “It has also become increasingly obvious that in order to break the narrative, I cannot focus on both a reelection to Congress and a broader fight nationwide.”

A decade ago, Kinzinger saw authorities setting “politics aside,” but this month, he told CNN’s John Berman that politics has “infected everything.” He went on to criticize Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for his “absolutely outrageous” decision to forego a meeting with President Joe Biden during Hurricane Idalia.
