The Mandalorian’s Hidden Link to a Classic Japanese Manga

If you are a fan of manga, especially vintage manga, and obsessed with Star Wars, something may surprise you (or not). With the new addition of The Mandalorian to the Star Wars canon, some fans may notice similarities between the show and the Japanese manga “Lone Wolf and Cub.” 

Here are 20 similarities between these two:

Chapter 67 of Lone Wolf and Cub has very little dialogue on half of the pages. It is a dramatic way of storytelling. Something that The Mandalorian picks up on with the evolution of the Grogu’s character.

Daigoro, Itto’s son in Lone Wolf and Cub, is often shown playing with nature. Grogu also enjoys exploring the world around him.

Itto Ogami shows empathy and compassion towards Daigoro due to Daigoro’s childlike innocence. This theme is reflected in Mandalorian’s sympathy towards Grogu.

There is a Way that both Ogami and Mandalorian talk about. For Mandalorian, it is a creed, whereas Ogami considers the Way a path of revenge.

As the story of Lone Wolf and Cub progresses, Itto Ogami takes on more personal missions. Mandalorian can be seen forsaking old assignments for new ones more personal to him.

Both Mandalorian and Ogami have a range of weapons and gadgets they use. For example, Mandalorian has an Ambian Sniper Rifle. At the same time, Ogami uses a cart that doubles as a type of machine gun.

Mandalorian travels with Grogu after being paid to kidnap the child. Itto Ogami is also accompanied by a young child (his son).

Ogami and Mandalorian overestimate the weakness and vulnerability of their charges. Ogami’s son is only 3 years old, and Grogu is 50 (but still considered a child).

Grogu possesses the ability to use the Force. Though Daigoro doesn’t have such capacity, he does have the capability to think with wisdom that belies his age.

In Lone Wolf and Cub, Ogami forces Daigoro to choose between a ball and a sword. If Daigoro picks the blade, he will follow Ogami’s steps on the journey of vengeance.

In The Book of Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker forces Grogu to choose between a gift and a lightsaber. If Grogu picks the lightsaber, then he will learn the Jedi way.
