Texas Students’ Pledge of Allegiance Protest Sparks Outrage: Teacher Faces Claims of ‘Brainwashing’

Students of one Texas school refused to take part in the Pledge of Allegiance, rousing allegations from parents and other staff that their teacher was ‘brainwashing’ them. The incidence sparked controversy on social media, and landed the Texas third-grade teacher in hot water with the schools administration. This silent protest, not dissimilar to the ‘take a knee’ movement within professional sports, challenged the status quo and opened a divisive conversation about patriotism and the role of free speech in education.

Silent Protest Sparks Trouble

A third-grade teacher in Texas found herself entangled in a controversy with the school’s administration following an unexpected classroom scenario. Her students had decided to silently protest the Pledge of Allegiance, stirring up trouble.  Accusations of influencing the students to engage in the act pointed a finger of blame towards the teacher, who was argued to have ‘brainwashed’ the students into this act of civil disobedience. The event, which occurred during a school assembly, has attracted attention and opened up conversations about the role of the Pledge of Allegiance in schools.

The silent protest took place during a mandatory school assembly. The third-grade class sat quietly while the rest of the school recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The group of eight to nine-year-olds’ act of civil disobedience not only caught the attention of their peers but also the school authorities who chose to take immediate action.

Facing escalating tensions with her superiors, the educator found an outlet for her exasperation in a TikTok video that promptly caught the internet’s attention. The brief yet impactful clip, garnering over three million views, she share reprimand for informing her students of their legal and constitutional rights not to stand for the pledge of allegiance.

Mounting Problems

Further concerns with Miss DeLoretto-Chudy’s teaching methods were then raised by the school, and a “catalog of concerns” was compiled. The concerns ranged from responsiveness to communication, like replying to emails promptly, to accurate adherence to administrative duties. DeLoretto-Chudy’s dress code even fell under scrutiny.

Taking A Stand

DeLoretto-Chudy was not intimidated however. According to her, the schools actual issue was with her “intentional attempt in teaching [her] students about their legal and constitutional rights.” The 27-year-old teacher was quick to denounce her administrator on social media, sparking controversy online.

Not A Problem

Caught amidst a storm of controversy on social media, the teacher took to TikTok asking, “Why is this a concern?”. As one would expect, her comments gathered a lot of responses from internet users One user’s comment stood out and echoed the sentiment of many, garnering over 22,600 likes, “I’m concerned that they find that concerning”. Another user ruefully pointed out, “The censorship is unreal”, voicing the recurring theme of discontent.

History Lesson

Delving deeper into the matter, the Texas educator offered more perspective on the school’s apprehensions in a TikTok. As a response to their exploration of propaganda and the Hitler Youth during a poignant Holocaust Remembrance Week, the eager minds in DeLoretto-Chudy’s classroom developed an intriguing quest – they wished to uncover the roots of the Pledge of Allegiance.

A Rich History

DeLoretto-Chudy’s class found that the Civil War, a time of deep-seated divisions over the issue of slavery, necessitated measures of unity. One such measure was the creation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Designed to bring the nation together, it was mandated for recitation in all classrooms.

When these third-graders discovered that the genesis of the Pledge of Allegiance traced back to an effort for instilling patriotic values in schoolchildren post the Civil War era, they felt an immediate urge to voice their dissent against the pledge itself.  Such a revelation struck a resonating chord with the classroom of young thinkers, who began questioning the necessity of a doctrine that seemed outdated to them and conflicted with their sense of freedom and individuality. In a show of civil disobedience, reminiscent of iconic protests from history, these students decided to remain seated during the school assembly when the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

The Kaepernick Approach

DeLoretto-Chudy’s instruction, rather than promoting any form of “disruptive behavior”, involved educating her pupils about the power of silent protest. A notable case study they studied was Colin Kaepernick, the renowned former quarterback and civil rights activist known for his silent protest in the form of kneeling during the national anthem. Taking a leaf out of Kaepernick’s book, the third-grade students started staging their own form of silent protest — sitting during the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at school assemblies.

Why Protest?

Some internet users were sympathetic to the concerns of parents and teachers however.  commenter noted, “These are young children who are presumably unable to fully comprehend the implications of such a complex act.” This suggests a belief that the students may not have a complete understanding of the reasons behind their protest, emphasizing the controversy surrounding the teacher’s role in encouraging this act.  One school administrator even accused DeLoretto-Chudy of “indoctrinating” the third-graders into protesting for “reasons they can’t fully understand.”
